The 2nd day...
went great. I stayed in the window (wide open, sticking half my body out), waved to the driver, got a visual on Simon and watched how he stood up, walked to the door of the bus (loved seeing him standing there before the doors opened), stepped down the steps, and took off running toward the front door with a big smile on his face.
He rang the doorbell. I opened the door. "I home." he said.
Sigh. Love it.
Later on in the afternoon, as I worked on deducing what he did at school (no notebook set up for back + forth communication yet), we chatted just a bit about the bus and he told me that next time he wants me to come out to the bus. LOL - sounds like an opportunity for me to set the expectation (thanks Jen) that someone will always meet him outside at the bus (which totally makes sense especially here where we live with all the rain that will be coming eventually as it does every year).
Never a dull moment.
That's so great that it went so well. Funny how when you let kids do what they choose, they often go back to what we are hoping they'll do. *S*

I love reading your blog and the work you do.
My sons both have disabilities and they are now 21 and 16 and both are doing great in school and in life. When they were Simon's age each day was an adventure. They changed their minds as fast as the second hands ticked on the clock. I can not say it will get easier but you will survive.
Take care!

I had to chuckle at the 'I'm home'. How grown up he sounds. Glad it went well on the second try.

OK, in all honesty, I get teary-eyed when I read these posts about Simon because they're so cute and I can just picture him in front of you doing or saying these remarkable little things. Hugs to you and have a great weekend!

I too get teary eyed or laugh out loud right along with you when I read your posts. I can just picture you hanging out the window...needing to know how things will go there, be there in a hurry if you need to but at he same time, allowing for some new independence. I am so happy to hear that day 2 went much better. It's hard for any parent to send their child off to school, but it's even scarier when they have special needs and we aren't physically present to help them thru the day.
Be sure to remind the school about the communication journal and how vitally important it is to communicate about Simon's day so that everything will go as smoothly as possible. Teachers are busy, but communication will keep things moving in the right direction. I was always happy to have a quick note from dd's aide as she was the one spending so much one-on-one time with my child.

This makes me cry. In a very good way. All about growth and change and give in take. The visual of simon standing at the doors of the bus just gave me shivers. So special to have such special people in our lives.

I have never commented here, but I read all the time. I so inspired by the patience and love that you express for Simon. You and Chris are wonderful parents. You are so right saying sending your child off to school is a major trust issue.

As a mom of a 5 year old daughter with HF autism, I can so relate to the last few days of posts. Sophie started at an inclusion kindergarten this year also. Glad to hear Simon is adjusting so well. I look forward to reading more as the school year progresses.

And isn't that what it is all about? How wonderful. All that love in two small words.

That's great, I'm glad you all made it fine through the first week, I know having an autistic child you just get use to the unexpected and go with the flow, one day at the time, big hugs, Rosa.
