Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)

Threethings_books

Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:

True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.

Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).

Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wings by Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."

Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:

Kelly Rae Roberts is an amazingly talented artist and apparently
equally gifted as a writer as well. This book is a journey from her
soul right into yours. It's part journal, part sitting around getting
deep with your girlfriends, part interviews with other talented artists
and part art instruction. So very different from other art books, even
from the same publisher. It goes above and beyond and straight into
your heart & head, making you think about your own creativity.

And until you find your creative spirit, the how-to make art
sections are very clearly thought out and well written. I know that I
will be able duplicate even the pieces that had materials I've never
used before.

This book is a treasure that I know I will refer to again and again.

I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

Oh...I hope it's not too late to enter. I love using paper and paint to recreate found objects.

Not sure if this qualifies as a technique, but I have been journaling like crazy. I went on a trip intended to scrapbook while traveling, and I ended up just taking photos and writing down my thoughts. I love it!

My favorite technique is always the last interesting one I learned. I just finished a kit from the uber-talented Carol Wingert that used spackle and a mask to create a textured album cover. Beautiful, messy and fun. Perfect combination!

My fav technique is a new one to me. I was at the book store and was flipping through Visual Chronicles and came upon the technique of "coloring" on black and white or sepia pictures with watercolor pencils/crayons and a bit of water. So easy to do and totally changes the look of any picture!

I love to make cards, right now I'm enjoying adding sewing embellishments to them.

    Hi Ali~
My creative technique these days is catching up on all my favorite scrapbooking/photo blogs. They always give me inspiration to do something special with my 1000+ photos of summer. Working on mini books and updated photo collages for my walls are my favorites for Fall 08.
Thanks for the opp to win!

Wow. Playing with wax on canvas, painting with textures, and using a lot more fabric. Just not enough time in my day to do it all, but soooooo much fun. Hope you are feeling well Ali, and how excieting sharing this journey with your sis. Have a lovely day :-)

My fav technique? I've been going through a drought recently. But, just Sunday, I took out some acrylics and canvas and played around, inspired by some pieces you did a long time ago. I painted, used foam stamps from Lisa Bearnson and plastic cups to make circles. Thanks so much for your constant inspiration!

RIght now my favourite technique has to be using IPhoto to make photo books. I have done a few as Christmas gifts (I know, it's August) but they are gorgeous and I feel like I can easily mix beautiful photos with text and get a fantastic result. It really has motivated me to do more scrapbooking. I've been in a non-scrap mode all summer.

(I hope I'm not too late to post!) I've really gotten into photography lately. I'm taking a class and loving every minute of it! I've started delving into the digi-scrapbooking recently and hope to be able to have some wonderfully creative pictures to add!! Thanks Ali for all you do!

I am just actually starting to play with acrylic stamps and am loving it...I decided to throw my good friend a baby shower, mainly so I could make invitations with all my new supplies, and make cute decorations and things I am way excited...the best part is it isn't till December, so I have plenty of time to play around! Yay!

I am still very interested in scrapbooking, especially the mini books! Trying my hand at using acrylic pieces. Exciting and challenging at the same time!

To use the objects I have for projects, rather than buying specifically for something. I don't have the extra budget anymore for my supplies, so being more creative with what I have is challenging.

I love anything that has something to do with paper --- scrapbooking, cardmaking, different paper crafts, mini-albums, etc. I relish making something wonderful and different out of a flat (and otherwise simple) piece of paper. :)

I've been having a ball with my travel journal! Been going back quite a few years and putting all our trips into one journal. Trying to just use words....a very good technique used by a certain uber-scrapper!

Hi Ali. I love the looks of the Taking Flight book. Went to Barnes & Noble today to check it out but they didn't have it yet. I worked on a book today where I took a stencil and using Spackle to make a cover. Really cool how it came out.

The latest techniques that I have been into is a little more hybrid scrappin'. I love that I can make a million different choices and not ruin a piece of pretty paper to try something new.
