Sunday Happiness: Eric Carle on The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Around here we are big fans of Eric Carle's books - especially his classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Loved finding this little video gem online today where he talks a bit about the book and his creative process as he celebrates the release of The Very Hungry Caterpillar 40th Anniversary Pop-Up Book.

Someday I would love to visit his museum in Amherst. He even has a blog :).

I love Sundays.

Thanks for the wonderful video today! I showed to both my sons (now 8 and 11) and they were sitting here watching and talking about how some of there favorite book were Eric Carle's. I still have the book and they hold so many memories.Eric Carle is a truely gifted story teller and artist.

Ali, I can't thank you enough for highlighting one of my kids' favorite artists/authors. I never realized he founded a museum in Amherst. I live only about an hour from there and definitely plan to take as many of my kids (ages 7-19) who will go with me. My oldest is an art major and my youngest is STILL pulling the Very Hungry Caterpillar off the book shelf for bedtime reading so I think we would ALL enjoy the museum. Thanks for this wonderful tip.

He seems like such a nice man....no wonder he was able to create such amazing books. My children loved them! I am lucky to be able to teach kindergarten so I get to read them still although my own kids are big.
    Thanks for the video link!

He is one of our family's favorite. Some books got so much use that we had to replace
them with a second copy! We have also given as gifts numerous copies of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It is usually what I give as a baby shower gift.

    Ali-
Thanks so much for sharing this video with us! :) Eric Carle seems like a very sweet gentleman. I love the Very Hungry Catepillar. I especially loved how he talked about how difficult it can be to be a child. Makes you think....

We adore Eric Carle!! The Very Hungry Caterpillar was the first book our Wyatt ever read - and now he is an avid little reader.
Thanks so much for the links - we will have to get to the museum!

When my 5 yr old was born, we decorated his nursery in The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I made caterpillars and food with holes in it with paintable texturized wall paper that you can get at HomeDepot. I got together with friends and we painted sheets of the wallpaper different shades of green, blue, red, pink, yellow, silver....then when i needed green ovals I'd cut them out of the green painted sheet of wallpaper. I used wallpaper glue to put them on the walls. Unfortunately we moved when my son was 10 months old :o( It was one of the hardest and most gratifying projects I've ever done.

We love Eric Carl books and The Very Hungry Caterpillar has a very special place in our home - it is such a well loved book - and well worn. Brody started reading this when he went to Providence special needs school, they even got caterpillar kits and released the butterflys outside once done in the cocoon - I just finished making the boys Very Hungry Caterpillar quilts and I love them so much and so did they!
Thank you for sharing - didn't realize that it was 40 years old.
    Happy sunday

Ali, did you catch the Art of Eric Carle exhibit when it was at the Tacoma WA Art Museum in 2006-2007? My daughter went on a school field trip to see it, and we enjoyed it so much.

You really should visit his museum. It's very close to my in-laws place in Amherst, and I've been there before. I loved there!
You'll even love the town itself, too.
Very small, but very very beautiful place.

Ali, thank your for sharing. My heart smiled when he said "I love collage." Just to see his creative process was wonderful. I didn't know his art wasn't painted! And he seems like such a sweet, gentle man. Growing up IS hard, and I'll be he's helped many, many children. And yes, we have a number of Eric Carle books in our house. Although my son is now in his teens, I've tucked the books away for his children, when he has them.
