Yesterday & Today: Revisiting Old Layouts

AE_Read2010_low

One of my last Studio A columns for Creating Keepsakes focused on using older pages as inspiration for new pages. I looked back at pages I had done when Simon was an infant and used those as jumping off points for similar pages for Anna.

When I was looking through my photos from January the other day I came across this one of Anna looking at a book while sitting on my lap. It reminded me of this page I put together many years ago:

105729-3
Simon was almost exactly the same age as Anna is now in these photos (this was actually my first published layout - it appeared in Becky Higgins Sketch Column in 2003). Some of the books she reads now are the very same ones he did back in January 2003.

This is one of the reasons I love scrapbooking: I can go back and literally see the parallels of life. Connections are made right in front of my eyes. My story becomes richer as one layer is placed on top of another.

I was listening to Paperclipping Roundtable this morning and they were talking about the reasons people don't scrapbook/the reasons why they don't get anything done. Overwhelmed by choice was number one on Lain's list.

Here's my message to you today after listening to the podcast and reflecting back on this old layout: JUST GET THE STORY TOLD.

Get it told in whatever way works for you. Maybe it's in a scrapbook or on your computer or in a notebook or on combined with the photos you are uploading to Flickr. Tell it in a way that you will be able to find it again (yes, this little bit of organization is key) so that in the years to come you can look back and make your own connections between the stories of yesterday & today.

What stories have you told in the past that you can revisit today?

Here's a close-up look at the journaling area/combination of elements from the new layout:

Love the layout! I am missing you in CK- it is really not the same without you.
I am missing my monthly Ali inspiration that I can spend hours looking at and find new inspiration every time I pick it up. Any chance you will do another periodical? A class is not in the budget or schedule, but I can usually swing a magazine!

Thanks Ali! I'm very, very guilty of being overwhelmed by the choices involved in scrapping. I needed that message of just get the story told. That's what I'm going to focus on this year.

I was wondering have you done a family tree chart layout? If so could you share how you went about doing it, I am getting really hung up on it and I am not sure what I am doing about a chart. Also I would love to take another class from you. Can't wait to see what you and Stacy come up with.

I've added Big Picture to my favorites. Gotta stop reading so much and start scrapping more. I just love all the learning that goes with scrapping. Thanks Ali, you are great.

Hi Ali, I saw that what I was going to ask was already asked in the comments, so I won't ask again, but just tell you. :) I was actually wondering, as I read you were going to teach Y&T again on BPS if you were going to teach another class as well. Yesterday & Today litterally changed my life! And my perspective about scrapbooking and I can't stop talking to people about it, and, well, I wan't more!!! :D I was happy to read that you already have some ideas. Thanks for everything you do Ali!

Not sure which version of IE you are using, but Google just recommended upgrading to at least IE7, too, as they will now start phasing out their support for older IE versions. Read more about it here: http://googleenterprise.blogspot.com/2010/01/modern-browsers-for-modern-applications.html

(okay so THAT comment looks really strange in Safari under OS X, too! The text is cut off on the right hand side, maybe something to do with the link I posted? Hm.)

A belated 'thank you' for the December Daily 2009 tutorials Ali. I completed my first scrapbook a few weeks ago - my imperfect technique tells the story as much as the story tells itself!

Love the recent layouts Ali! So glad to hear you will be teaching the Yesterday & Today class again - missed it last time around, but hope to be able to take it this time. Can't wait to hear what else you may be teaching.
Also, we have that exact same book here at home and my little one loves it! She is just recently enojoying touching all the "feel spots" in it. She has started bringing books to me over the past month so we can look/read together.

Your new LO with Anna is gorgeous. Simple and sweet. It's a cool idea to look back at older stuff for inspiration. Is that you with dark, dark hair in the Simon LO? Isn't hair great. I just went from light-ish to dark. Even though I know I won't keep it this new color forever, the change feels good. :)

Ali, thanks for reinforcing the "making connections" theme. And you already know this, but could that daughter of yours get any more cute or beautiful? She's just delicious!

ali, i just love how you are utilizing Flickr to get your current stories told. i remember the mention of it in a previous post, but i skipped over it knowing that my camera is in the shop and i can't do it as part of a 365 right now. but, while reading today it hit me that i have many, many, many 'old' stories that need told. i never considered random choosing an 'old' photo and telling the story associated with it. it just occurred to me tonight. because really. i will never be able to scrapbook ALL of the stories that i wish to tell. but Flickr can be used as a tool to still get those stories documented. so cool. thanks for the inspiration.

Squeeeee! Sorry - I just got all excited as I see you and Anna have the same book we do here in our house down here in NZ! It was a favourite of our now Mr almost 6 - and actually he still likes to get it out now and again!
Maybe THAT'S today's story for me!! LOL

I So agree with you Ali! Just get the story told. I'm often overwhelmed by the choices involved in scrapping. I need to stay focused on storytelling. And that is what I'm doing, right now. I started with the letter A last week, then B this week and will continue on with the letter C next week.... In the end I will have 29 more stories told :) (we have 3 extra letters in our alphabet). Maybe I will scrapbook some of the stories later, but it is not that important to me anymore.
