Knee Deep

I'm currently knee deep in the stuff of life.

The fun stuff like prepping tax files for the accountant, scheduling doctor's appointments, attending mediation meetings, developing content for a new 4+ week class for Big Picture (that actually is fun), encouraging my kids to eat their vegetables, thinking about the how/why/when of telling the more challenging stories of our lives when you are in the middle of it, day-dreaming about spring break (also actually fun), and trying to keep George the cat off the kitchen counters.

It's pretty darn crazy right now, but it's mine.

    Ali,
I wanted to send you a blessing of gratitude. For being so real here in your blog and in your storytelling. I have a very difficult time in my family right now, our darling Granny is declining into dementia and times are hard for us all. When its a particularly bizarre week and I wonder what to put into Project Life and what to leave out I think about you. I look for the good and positive things but I also acknowledge that this is a really hard time and think on how to be real and include that as well.
At first I appreciated your honesty because it is so authentic. Now I appreciate your honesty because it is helping me be real.
    Thank you
    Sarah

Sharon, you took the words right out of my mouth! I LOVE Christmas, but it takes me months to recover. I really admire the Martha Stewart types who are always all cleaned-up and prepared for the next Holiday/Season well before it starts...it's just not me... xo

Hang in there Ali. Celebrate the little accomplishments. Be kind and take time for yourself if at all possible.

This week is challenging for me too. My sister that passed away last March; her birthday is this Fri. Trying to think of what I can do for her kiddos to help them through it. They live several hundred miles away. It's time like this I wish we lived closer. We'll get through it. Keep "trucking on" as my sister so often said (in reference to the lyrics to Wolf Creek Pass; a favorite silly song of hers).

    Take care you,
    Suz

Something about your statement really caught my eye...it is only knee deep. When I think that all the "stuff of life" could be at "over my head"...knee deep doesn't really seem that bad. Thank you for the perspective.

Hugs to you and yours, Ali. I'm feeling overwhelmed these days, too, and I caught myself wishing for another life...any life, but this blessed one just for a few moments. But you're right. "it's mine," and I've got to find the awe in it.

    Hi Ali

Right here alongside you with the stuff of life!

I used double sided tape on the for a few weeks to keep the cat off the counters. He didn't like the sensation of the tape each time he jumped up and eventually decided to stop trying.

I ve also heard of people using aluminum foil to keep cats off of stuff. Apparently they don't like that stuff either.

    Good luck

    Denise

One step at a time, one breath at a time. Your days and nights are molding you into the woman you are becoming. It's all good, even though some if it is the fertilizer of life!

The water bottle did not deter my two fuzzballs from the kitchen island. I finally compromised with them. They are allowed on the island which has the main sink and the dishwasher. We do no cooking prep there and they stay off the other counters. It works for us because we have lots of counter space and a second sink. They love sitting there and watching me cook! They have a tall kitty tower in the corner of the kitchen, but prefer the counter.

Ali, for George, you could try the spray bottle- it's cheep and it works when you're there, but you could also try a product called Scat Mat or something like that- especially for if you are gone. It is a thin mat (like the thickness of a self-healing cutting mat). There is a battery or it's plugged in to the wall- I can't remember. When the cat goes on the mat (which you put on the counter), it either emits a sound or a vibration. Look for it at Drs Foster & Smith (pet catalogue with a website). Good luck!

    Ali,
I've been thinking about your comment on telling the harder (read deeper) stories while you are in the midst of them. I read this blog http://www.papercoterie.com/blog/to-thine-own-self/ and thought what a missed opportunity this was---if she'd written about her situation while she was in it two things might have occurred: clarity for her, and a kindred spirit for another.
I have a dear friend who struggles with infertility and she takes comfort in those women who will share and come-along-side her in her troubles. I try to be supportive, but I have 2 kids (that she dearly loves, but also desperately wants for herself). Other women who are going through a similar thing have a clearer perspective and can help in very real ways.
It isn't about the easy answer, or even always having one. Sometimes it's about the journey.

The cat is NOT supposed to be on the counter?? Our cats are always on the counter...will have to have a talk with them. Only place we can put the food so the dog doesn't eat it!!

Knee deep...good way to put it!! We have all been there...remember to Consider it All Joy!!

Sounds like George's word for 2012 is up, too! ;)

Try putting tin foil on the counters. Cats tend to hate the sound feel of it and it works when you aren't around as well. :)

Knee deep? Good thing you are so tall! Your knee deep probably WOULD drown me!
New paragraph: when you figure out how to do the crappy stuff while you are in it, DO IT! It will be great to look back and see what you have survived! Believe me, I know! :) I remember when I feared my daughter would be a wild child -- and that was when she was Anna's age! Now she's my hero! A mere 20 years later. Love.
