Weekend movies & the bohemian lifestyle.

Chris and I watched two movies last weekend. The first time in awhile we took the time to lounge, eat ice cream, and enjoy a couple great movies. First we watched: Finding Neverland. Loved this film. About writing and dreams and imagination and living and dying. Makes me want to read Peter Pan - especially since my only association with it is the Disney movie. It will go on my list.

The second movie we watched and seriously made an impact on my life: Super Size Me.

Have you seen this documentary? You should.

[ READER BEWARE: the following comments could be considered radical. ]

Made me think long and hard about the kinds of THINGS (read not real food) I have put into my body over the years. I am now officially on a REAL FOOD campaign. We made the decision earlier this year to make the change to organic fruits and vegetables - this was mainly due to Simon's diagnosis and our desire to get rid of the things that he just does not need in his diet. I have been reading labels - looking for ingredients that occur naturally, that I can pronounce.

But
I have still been eating fast food and other items that are processed and modified and enhanced and filled with sugar and fat. All those foods that taste so damn good and make you want more and more.

After seeing this movie last weekend I will not be visiting fast food restaurants again. YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT.

I have been lovingly called bohemian in the past. Looked it up today:

BOHEMIAN
2: unconventional in especially appearance and behavior; "a bohemian life style"
3: a nonconformist writer or artist who lives an unconventional life

I guess wanting to eat real, whole foods is unconventional these days. Bring it on. I want to feel good and put things into my body that feed my brain, my heart, my soul. So I'll keep you posted.

So, Cathy and Donna - no more BK on our adventures.

ali, hi there...i recently found your blog through tara's somehow and love it! i agree about the bohemian lifestyle and recently went to an organic farm that i found in arizona of all places and loved it! the food was fresh and wonderful and i started a conversation with a woman there about milk and kids these days. we switched about a year ago to horizon milk and i'm so glad we did, i just keep hearing more and more about the growth hormones and what effect they're having on our kids.
p.s. didn't you love the cinematography in Finding Neverland...made me want to take a class in that too!
    nice meeting you!

Ali, I think that there is a growing trend towards eating more naturally, a "whole foods" way of eating. Its the old fashioned way of eating, really, that was taken over by commercial food interests--McDonalds, Kraft, etc & now many people seem to be taking another look. I won't profess to eat whole foods, but I do think that its interesting that many people are looking towards natural foods & home cooking with more interest...maybe a part of the "nesting" trend that began in the 90s & grew after 9/11??? Just some thoughts :)

I had the same reaction after watching Super Size Me 6 months ago. I havn'et been in McDonald's excpet for a bathroom break since then. I've also stopped BK and Taco Bell and anything else that has food like that. It's amazing just how much we can come to rely on those places for food.

I still need to watch Finding Neverland. But I did watch Super Size Me, it was a real eye opener. I love when he mentions that a salad with dressing has more calories than a Big Mac.
Did you see the new magazine Martha Stewart is putting out, Body and Soul. It's really good.

you know it is a hard concept to accept, and I still would be eating take out and foods with tons of additives and preservatives if I wasn't living proof of what food can do for you. I totally reversed my crohn's condition just by reading this book http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1591856213/sixapart-20/104-7421349-4102333 and eliminating all refined sugar from my diet. I was facing surgery so I was desperate. I don't preach it to others but Jeff and I have come to realize what it has done for our health and we try to do the best we can. I have heard lots about this movie, haven't seen it, but I can just imagine. Good luck with healthier eating. You can do it.

I haven't seen Super Size Me yet but I have read enough about that movie to never want to eat fast food again.
Luckily my husband is a vegetarian so we eat health 90% of the time. We always have fresh veggies and fruit in the house at all times :)
Now if we could just convince my daughter..

I've been called a "hippy farmer". I like Bohemian even better! "Good" food is a topic near and dear to my heart. We're gently trying to take our customers to the next level, to realizing that not all meat/veggies/fruit are created equally. Unbelievably we've had customers say to us, "You're not organic, are you?", as if it's a disease. But modern commodity agriculture has such a stranglehold on this state that organics is seen as a fringe thing.
Anyway, I'd better quit now before I really go off on a rant. Just wanted to say, good for you!

Seen that movie and WOW--did it make an impression on us! We do NOT eat there any more at all! If we find ourselves needing to eat fast food for any reason, we try to make it either Subway or Quizno's, healthier foods like that. Funny that this is your post topic today...I finished off the last of some candy I had last night and vowed to myself that it was the last time I would eat any, trying for a healtier lifestyle all around. Need to get back to the gym to loose these last 10 pounds that seem glued to my hips and butt, need to cook more healthy food here at home instead of looking elsewhere, be more active with the kiddos and as a family! Seems to be the trend these days and I have to say, I'm really enjoying it! Good for you on your choice!

another good read that will put you off fast food forever is Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. Between that and "Supersize Me" it will end the urge for fast food.

The SSM made me change, too. We didn't eat that many fast food meals, anyway, but now we eat even fewer. I see McD's as the big bad corporate monster. They scare me!! Not just the food, but the corporation. Not that the others are much better...

I havn't seen the SSM movie yet, however the movie was shown in my sons high school health class. What a great place to show it - too many kids eating too much junk. Might be a good suggestion for other school districts.

I have issues with this.....I really want to be a hippy or something like that. But with 3 slightly crazy kids....McD's is a haven for me. I use Playplace McD's to read, and look through magazines, and just to have a few minutes of peace. I have put off watching Supersize me for this reason....I'm scared of it, and what it'll do to my routine:)

Since I saw that documentary I have eaten at a fast food restaurant twice. It made such an impact on me. And I guess I have shown it, because every time my mother-in-law takes my daughter there, she apologizes profusely and says that they just had to go. I think all things in moderation, but that just did me in and I feel a great deal better about my lifestyle.Great thoughts!

Way to go on getting healthy Ali! When I saw that movie it only confirmed why I had given up fast food. If you really want to get motivated to be more healthy I recommend getting your body fat percentage taken. When I got mine taken in December I was shocked by how high it was and how I was in the "unhealthy" category for my age group. It threw me into a tail spin of hiring a trainer and making a conscious effort to get my cardio in weekly. Just last night I learned I have lost 6% in body fat and I have 3-4% to go before I am considered "healthy" again.
Most gyms will do the test for you if you just take a tour of the gym or sign up for a pass to test it out for a week.
