Beyond.

I should have known, all those years ago, by the amount of magazines I hoarded, that I would someday have a true love affair with design and words and merging it all together. That this combination would be my passion.

And maybe I did know. It was all just part of my personal evolution. And a part of me all along the line.

I can't resist a magazine. Sometimes I love them for the design : for the cool use of type, for the way they mesh images, for the white space, for the stuff layered all over, for the new way they make me look at things I have seen a million times before. And sometimes I love them for the content : for the information, for the insights, for the way they make me feel inside, for the way they use words, for the way the words reach me at just the right time.

Awhile back I was introduced to a new publication called Beyond. Their mission: to explore what it means to be truly human. All I had to do was read that and I wanted in - that is a damn good mission. That, and I was enchanted by their cool website. So I sent in my money, knowing it would be awhile before I saw my first issue because it is a no-ads ALL content magazine that was just getting started.

My first issue arrived the other day. It was worth the wait.

Content marrying design.
Things that made me think. Books I now want to read. Design and art I was inspired by. The kind of magazine you lay down in bed to read and then almost have to get up becuase it lights a fire in you and makes it tough to go to sleep.

These people are doing something good.

Ali, I have been readying your blog for a few weeks now and you are my new favorite! Your designs are so incredible and so is your spirit. You are a true inspiration. I also share your love of magazines. I got it from my mother. I can hardly get through a grocery store without buying at least one...I think it is becoming an expensive addiction. Can't wait to check out this new one you have recommended.

Magazine junkie here. You've been to Periodicals Paradise on Hawthorne, right? If not, GO. It's crammed with used magazines for cheap prices.

Ali, thanks so much for mentioning us. I am wondering if your first issue (13) went to the wrong address. I'll send it out right away with a "sorry you didn't get 13" treat.
Peace to all of you this day.

I always have to read a magazine at least 4 times. Once for the intended message, another for the layout appeal, another for typesets/fonts, another for wow...cool use of color....etc. Takes me darn near FOREVER. LOL I'll have to check this one out! Thanks for the lead!

I'm a total mag whore. It's part of the reason why I'm a journalism major. Hopefully, I'll be writing for one in a couple of years!
