Life With Baby Stuff

Anna-print

[ Custom alphabet print from Penny People ]

Having a new baby seven years after the first & sharing/donating/selling all our baby things meant that I needed to do some shopping/research/borrowing before Anna came along. One of the big things on my mind was that I didn't want a lot of stuff. Our house is small, clutter drives me crazy, and I remembered from Simon that we really did not need a ton of stuff (hard to know that the first time around).

What I also remembered is that what worked for one baby may not work for another. I figured I would start with a few basics and go from there depending on her temperament and how things were going (which as you may know can change from minute to minute with an infant).

So far, so good in the stuff department. I've been happy with most of the things I purchased before she came along.

Here's some of the things that are working really well for us right now during these early weeks:

Underthenile

Under the Nile Bunting : Super soft + cozy. Perfect for sleeping. We are using the velour one right now and will probably order a cotton one as the weather warms up. I like having something specific to put her in when it is bedtime as part of establishing a night-time routine. I also love their clothes - especially the footed pants & the long sleeve side-snap tops (this has become her cozy uniform).

Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece
: Anna definitely sleeps better when swaddled and this thing makes it
really easy to get it tight. One of my favorite things is that I don't
have to undo her arms to change her diaper in the middle of the night -
the bottom section just pulls down & then you can tuck it back in
and lay her back down when I am done.

Annaseat

BabyBjörn BabySitter Balance : This one came highly recommended from my sister-in-law Liz who had been using it with her daughter Lucy. So far it has been great for those quiet alert times - this is what I put her in when I take a shower or when I am in the kitchen. It is definitely expensive but I like that it can be used for quite awhile as she gets bigger and that it has three different recline levels. You can read more about it here.

Boppy

Boppy Bare Naked Expandable Miracle Middle Pillow : I had one of these with Simon and used it all the time. This time around I had a really hard time finding a cover I liked so my sweet Mother-In-Law volunteered to sew one for me. I ended up supplying her with some awesome chenille fabric pieces I picked up at the Coburg Antique Fair last September. Because none of the pieces were big enough on their own she ended up doing one fabric on the top and another on the bottom. I LOVE, love, love how it turned out - the chenille is super soft. She actually created her own pattern by using the cover that came on the pillow.

Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Infant Car Seat : Another recommendation from my sister-in-law (she is so great) that I am really happy with so far. She fits great in the seat (she is still so tiny) and seems to be really comfortable + cozy in the car, grocery store, etc. She has spent most of the time she has been in the seat asleep. I love that her head does not flop around as I remember Simon's doing in his infant seat.

And something that is completely unnecessary but I have liked this time: Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer
(there is also a warmer for cloth wipes available here: Prince Lionheart Warmies Bamboo Cloth Wipes Warmer).

If you have sent me an email recently thank you for your patience as I work my way through them. Anna and I are doing lots of hanging out with a bit of work thrown into the mix.

I'm amazed that the 'new' baby things available. (My baby is 24. LOL) I think keeping it simple and uncluttered is always best. Enjoy the pretty baby things with that pretty baby!

I have loved the wipe warmer as well!! Your right, completely a luxury, but wonderful!! And the loved my Bare Naked Boppy Pillow, too. Also good to prop them in when they're a little bigger and a bit congested. I have heard really good things about McClaren (sp?) strollers, for a bit later on. They are expensive, but I have heard they are great, especially for travelling, which I know you like to do. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself and your family with us!

It is so funny to hear people ( & you are not the first to voice this) say the wipe warmer is unnecessary because we found with twins it was one of our absolute essential tools.
Because the wipes were not icy, we were able to change both twins' diapers during the night without either one of them crying and waking up the other. Totally saved my & DH's sanity at the time! : ) Besides - who wants icy cold wipes on their bum? LOL!

    I LOVE BABY STUFF!!
When my almost 22 year old was two weeks out from arriving I realized I did not have a little baby bath tub, I swear I almost went into panic mode thinking we might have a baby with out a little baby bath tub, who knew a sink and a soft towel will do ya!!
Thank you for sharing the sweetness of baby Anna and big bro Simon!

Oh, you guys crack me up with the wipe warmer! I guess to each his own, right? It's true, Ali, that the second time around you realize how little you actually need for the baby...but that bouncer was a definite necessity around our house with both boys!

Hmmm. . . a wipes warmer. Our baby is due in 8 weeks, and that was one I hadn't thought of! I guess I can see that it might be nice, but certainly wasn't on my radar screen! I'll have to do some more looking at this. Thanks for the advice!

so glad you discovered the baby bjorn seat...i wanted something simple for our kiddos (no lights, sounds, etc.) and this was probably our most used purchase for all three kiddos! (i love the red and navy...ours is just plain navy!) and you can never go wrong with peg perego!

You're so right about everything changing with a break between kids ... most of the stuff out there now didn't even exist 14 years ago when I started having kids. I had to research it all, too, when I had #3 a couple years ago. And isn't it funny how something seems so essential for one baby and then not at all for another?? I couldn't live without my bouncy chair with my first daughter but we hardly touch it with my second. Our boppy pillow, on the other hand, is now a MUST in our house, but I didn't have one (or miss it) with my first three. What has been very helpful for all of our kids, however, has been a snugglie (or baby Bjorn or whatever brand you prefer...) and then later a backpack so they can travel along with daddy when he's puttering in the yard and around the house. Gives me a nice break, too. :)

Don't want to sound creepy, but I keep checking your blog because I love all the baby postings! I am expecting my 2nd baby (SIX years after our son) in just a few weeks so having you ahead of me is quite fun to see all the goodies you post. Its wonderful to read that someone else is 'starting over' in the baby world as well. combined with the Life ART--your blog is truly inspiring. Thank you for that!!!

The Swaddle Me is a favorite here too - worked great for both of my kids, especially my son who had excema on his face and would scratch it raw if not swaddled. Although I did find that the fleece ones work best when they are a little older, as the cotton ones are a little stretchier (easier for a baby to "escape").

    Ali,
As a pediatric physical therapist I'm always excited when I see the boppy! Parents often don't realize that this magical little pillow can be used in infancy as a support and then later as a tool to teach sitting balance, crawling or prone skills as well as serve as a safe "landing pad" for kids as they begin to pull to stand. Hang on to it and let me know if you need ideas on how to use it as Anna gets bigger!

The wipes warmer was a necessity around here when DD was tiny (she's now 2.5 & we'll be using it again in a few weeks when DD #2 arrives!). The warm wipes kept the high pitched screeching to a minimum during middle of the night diaper changes! LOL!
The warm wipes work great for removing makeup too!

Your mother-in-law could start her own etsy shop with those boppy covers. Beautiful. The boppy material, AND of course, baby Anna.
