That's my boy.

Simon

I bet he's day-dreaming about capturing the snitch.

Simonbroom2

Moments before he was practicing for and/or participating in a quidditch match.

If you have no idea what I am talking about it's all Harry Potter all the time around (Star Wars seems to have taken a back-seat for the time being...even the legos have gotten a break the past couple of days).

He definitely wants to be Harry for Halloween and we have been looking at costumes online. In reality I think he wants to be Harry everyday. He has a wand that his Aunt Liz carved for him that has been used so
many times over the past few years to cast spells on us (both when he is happy & frustrated).

Lately it's been riding the broom that he has enjoyed the most. He has a little ball
he pretends is the snitch and he runs up and down the hall and outside racing around.

On Friday night he was fighting Dementors in our bedroom yelling "expecto patronum." I asked him what his patronus is and after thinking for a minute he decided that his is a giraffe. Chris asked him about mine and he said "hippo." Yep, hippo.

Last night we started a Harry Potter marathon with the first movie in the series (in general we seem to watch #4 or #5 the most lately...before that it was #2). Tomorrow night will be #2. I love having something like this to share with Simon - something we can enjoy together.

Good times around here. Good times indeed.

Simon makes such a sweet wizard!!!
Just wondering how old Simon was when you started watching Harry Potter with him and if there were ever any issues with it being too scary? My son is almost 6 and has watched the first 2 and LOVES them...but I am a little nervous that the subject matter and images in the latter ones might be a bit frightening.
    Thanks Ali!

And what a splendid Harry your Simon will make! We also have been on a HP kick. Movies and books all around. Don't you think it was just pure literary genius for J. Rowling to come up with this series?

I can totally see him playing Hawwie Potuh! I don't know his personality of course but he definitely has the look. Minus scar.

With just one girl, we have no sign of HP anything around here! It's all stuffed animals and dolls of many sizes and styles. Their identities and relationships change daily . . .
    Your son is adorable.

Reading this post just put a huge smile on my face! I think J.K. Rowling is amazing and I admire her so much! I loved the 7 books so much, and to be able to share the excitement with my girls has been fantastic! We have all of the DVDs, and we will just see the most recent movie when it comes out on DVD, but how fun to share a literary experience with our kids in this way! Simon on the broom? Priceless!
I'm also excited that my girls and I are all Twilight "fanpires"!! We are anxiously awaiting November so that we can go see New Moon! How amazing and wonderful to be this excited about books!

I heart HP! And to see it through a child's imagination makes the experience so much the richer! Thanks for sharing this everyday special moment.

Star Wars, Legos & Harry..... all any boy needs. My family was lucky enough to see the "Harry Potter Exhibition" at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago this past Friday, it was magnificent!!! We all went as characters from Harry Potter for Halloween 2007, my son was Harry, daughter Hermione, Husband was Hagrid & I was McGonagall. Fantastic family fun!!!

My son and I have been reading all of the Harry Potter books here. It's hard for me not to peek ahead, but I love taking turns reading to each other. We can's see a movie until we've finished the book (a rule I have in general) but we're getting ready to watch 2 and 3... so fun! Hope the snitch flies fast and furious for you!

Don't you just love how Simon is getting older and you can share stuff like this? My girls are getting older and it just seems like we are sharing more and more family moments filled with things like this, watching Harry Potter, playing Xbox games, going on family bike rides all kinds of stuff. Love it! TFS.

Gee, if I were in your shoes, I guess that I'd try to take hippo as a compliment. Mama hippos are fierce, dedicated and NOBODY messes with a mama hippo!! Several generations of our family are HP fans from grandma (moi) to daughter to grands (who BTW are becoming such critics that THEY didn't think they got the movie the way it was in THEIR kid-heads!!!) Great photos, which I'm sure will make a lovely page real soon!!!

Star Wars, Legos and Harry are what it is all about at our house too. Two years ago when my son was 8, I started reading the books aloud to him each night before bed. We agreed that we would not see the moving until we were finished with the book. Now we are almost done with book 5 and are having a blast. I would definitey recommend the Quittich costume for Halloween. My son wore that one last year and we got him the Firebolt to go with it. I had him wear black jeans, black shoes and a black turtle neck underneath. We also had him wear goggles. He loved it and was the most unique Harry out there. The Quittich robe has POTTER on the back and he still wears it almost everday.

We've all been enchanted by Harry Potter around our house too. We love the HBP and are starting the books all over again. One of my favorite birthday parties we've done was a Harry Potter party for my son Ben... can I tell how many wonderful things you can do a Harry Potter Party... makes me want to throw another one.

Harry Potter really started my son on reading when he was eight. I love the way you talk about Simon, I can really picture him pretending he's Harry. Do enjoy these moments with him Ali, my big boy turned 16 yesterday, and we have fewer opportunities to share things now...

My William is 15 now, but he has totally grown up with Harry. It's been exciting to be a part of 'future classic' books and films as they happen. Living in England, we have been completely immersed in it all, so it was no surprise that William wanted a Harry Potter room. It was already decorated like a castle, so it wasn't too much more work to add a fireplace, cauldron, school trunk, spell books, potion bottles and costumes. William has more wands than you can shake a stick at! (Go overboard? Me?) I even made him an invisibility cloak, which is always the first thing friends want to try on! ("Hey, William....now where did he go? He was here a minute ago!") However, my husband drew the line at me painting the ceiling like the sky....spoilsport! Anyway, if you ever find yourself coming to London, Simon is invited over for a Harry Potter fest. He even has a magical, snow-covered tree in there at Christmas! I'll e-mail you pictures if you're interested!
