One Little Word 2011

My 2011 necklace from the lovely Lisa Leonard. Get one for yourself here.

My word for 2011 is light.

This year my word sure seemed to choose me.

Most years I start thinking about my word for the following year in November or December. I think about it in passing and start listening, looking, and being open to the possibilities of a new word.

This year the word light seemed to be trying to catch my attention.

I found it in books, in magazines, in music, in conversations and in quiet moments.

So I'm going with it. It's already surprised, delighted, challenged and sparked some new things within me.

Some years I've had to look harder or listen longer or simply choose one that fit with what was on my mind and heart at that moment. There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2011. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word.

In a couple of days I'll post a compilation of the words as an inspirational reminder to us all.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

NEW FOR 2011 : ONE LITTLE WORD at BIG PICTURE CLASSES

I'm excited to be offering a brand new One Little Word online workshop through Big Picture Classes in 2011 as a way to connect with and honor our words throughout the year.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2011.

My word is JOURNEY. Even though, my husband & I have not been able to have children, we are still living our life. I want to put the idea behind me that our life is on hold, or that we are not really living our life because of our fertility problems. It is a part of the JOURNEY. It is part of our story..of our life. I want to embrace this part of the JOURNEY this year. As painful as it is, it's just the two of us. And I want to start enjoying the JOURNEY of us.

Thank you for starting the one little word movement. This is my fourth year joining in. Grace is my 2011 word. It has so many facets and each one speaks to me in a different way. Physical grace has never been my strong suit, so I'm seeking more of that. Grace of accepting what life brings me. Gracing others is a big part of this year's plan. Thank you Ali.

This is my first year choosing a word. I didn't intend to, but it sort of popped into my head and won't go away. The word is embrace. I hope to live this word literally - by embracing my family and those close to me and showing my love for them in more concrete ways. In addition, 2011 is going to be a year that brings a lot of change into my life. All of the changes look to be good ones, but change is not something I typically deal with well. So this year, I hope to embrace those changes and allow myself to simply enjoy the changes instead of dealing with them in a fearful way.

My word for 2011 is "embrace"

I want to embrace every little moment, enjoy the simple thing...I want to hug more, love more, do more, enjoy more, dream more, experience more, deepen relationships...open my ears, heart and mind to that little voice...

    Thanks for the inspiration...

My word this year will be RECHARGE. I've been a little 'off' for the last year and I want to "revive or restore energy, stamina, enthusiasm."
I'm excited to have joined your One Little Word class. I hope it will help keep me on track.

My word for 2011 is Purpose.
Every NYE, my husband and I share our new goals for the new year and this year our mantra is "Living...On Purpose". In everything we do, every decision we make will have purpose, every purchase we make...will have purpose. Setting our goals for the new year & with your inspiration of One Little Word -- it sets the barometer for the upcoming year. We are looking forward to what's to come for us.

Thank you Ali...I'm definitely looking forward to 'first day of class' tomorrow. Cheers to you & your family!

2011 is all about "achieve." I have so many things I have in the hopper that I need to finish up (or at least start) and this year I will achieve those things and more!

My word is "together" and all of its meanings: getting myself together, being together with those I love, realizing that this feeling of "togetherness" is really what makes each day seem successful.

For 2011, I want to focus on being more active and just doing what I need to do, instead of "thinking it over." So my one little word for this year is GO!

My word is going to be balance. I have been thinking about it for weeks and couldn't "come up with the word," then it found me as I was stressed out laying on bed wondering how to fit it all in, and then it hit me - I need balance!

    Happy New Year!

My word for 2011 will be MOVE.

Not only physically move, but move forward with life, projects, plans, etc...

As a family, we will begin the new year with a 5 mile hike around a local lake. Can't wait! :)

Last year, my word was refine, and it was the right choice for me. I really wanted to clear my life of unnecessary muck (both literally and figuratively) in order to bring forth "gold."

This year, it took up until today to choose a word, but I've finally settled on WARRIOR. I'm not thinking of armor and weapons when I think about my word, but about a sort of spiritual warrior. Becoming strong both physically and spiritually. Conquering the demons that hold me back in this life. Allowing myself to become tested by the fire, knowing that I will come out of it better and more at peace.

I'm really excited about the potential that this word holds for me!

My word is esteem. It hit me as I was cleaning out the fridge, how much I waste. Not just the food, but all throughout my life... Time, friendships, money, relationships. So many things go to waste, just because I don't treasure them enough, I don't hold them in high enough esteem. This year, I will focus on giving everything in my life the esteem it deserves
