One Little Word® 2014

My One Little Word for 2014 is thrive.

This year, more than any other I can remember, I'm starting off the year with questions. What does it mean for me to thrive? What does it look like? What does it fee like? Are there areas in which I'm already thriving? What's realistic vs. visions of what I have in my head of what it means to thrive?

Open was an awesome word for me last year. It was a touchstone as I navigated my way through growing pains and man oh man did it work in a million different ways I could not have imagined when I started 2013. More often than not when faced with a decision, I chose to open more rather than closing off which was my number one intention last year. That said, I feel like I've been spinning in circles a lot this past year. I've been reacting vs. being proactive and have been dealing with a variety of issues related to stress and growth (totally all part of my own life journey).

To me thriving is optimal living. It's being present and awake and stepping up to be my best self physically, emotionally, spiritually, creatively and within my relationships.

It's not a quest for perfection. It's an opportunity to continue choosing to let go of things outside of my control and to figure out who that best-me-right-now really is.

It will be a whole new journey and I'm here to tell you I welcome it wholeheartedly.

Bring on 2014.

This year I invited my friend Elise Blaha Cripe to film a little video about her experience with One Little Word. One of the reasons I admire Elise is that she is awesome at follow-through and documentation. I've loved reading about her experience with her words over the last few years on her blog and she inspires me consistently with her projects and her real-life reflections.

Here's Elise in her own words:

Thank you Elise for sharing about your own journey here.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

SHARE YOUR WORD THE COMMENTS | I’d love to read what word you’ve chosen or are considering for 2014. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I’ll combine all the words into a single post – super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

ONE LITTLE WORD® 2014 | To help keep your One Little Word® more visible throughout the year I offer a year-long workshop featuring one prompt per month. Read all the details and sign up here. Registration is $5 off until December 31.

My word is NURTURE. It comes naturally to me to nurture and care for others - but this year I need it to be about myself. Nurturing my own self - mind, body, spirit & creativity.

    Release.
My word found me because it is time. Time for me to release some of the things and thoughts that are keeping me from moving forward.

The word choose me around Thanksgiving. "Be" has embraced me and I'm excited to see how it unfolds in my life. Welcome 2014! Best wishes to everyone on this OLW journey and may 2014 "BE" the best year yet.

Returning OLW alumn and the word that choose me this year is:

    JOY

It solidified itself after I took the Brene Brown online course recently and the definition that Brene used for JOY touched me.

I look forward to this joyful journey with all of you!

FARTHER. Definition: "at or to a greater distance, at or to a more advanced point, at or to a greater degree or extent." Seems every aspect of my life from spirituality to physical well being needs this little word.

REVEAL seems to be where I keep coming back to. I know the feeling I want to embrace for the year ahead, but finding the right word hasn't come as easily as in the past two years. In a sense it's opening, but more than that, it is putting my whole self out for the world to see, and some of that is daring and risky, so the vulnerability of 'reveal' seems to fit. I also love that the word 'revel' is contained within reveal, because I want to revel in the revealing!

This is my 4th year of choosing OLW - my word this year is "Routine". I need to bring routine back in my life so I can feel more focused, more in control, more organized. Looking forward to what the year will bring by developing routines back into my life.

My OLW for 2014 was going to be "light." But then after reading this post by Glennon, I am changing it to "BE-YOU-TIFUL" b/c it encompasses so much more than just light.

I've always been a creative person since I was a young child. I ways always writing a story, journaling, or drawing. However, as I have grown..I feel that the creative side of me has gone to the way side and the business and reality side of me has taken over because I feel that it had to working in a business field. However, this depresses me...I really want to be able to let my creative side shine to and not just my financial & business side...so my word for 2014 is CREATE. I plan on focusing on scrapbooking and writing more and making sure I am making time for those things that I enjoy so much.

My word is fresh. I'm at a settled stage in my life, but the downside is that things can get stale. Excited to see where this word will take me in 2014! Thanks, Ali and Elise, for all the inspiration.

This is my first year picking a word and the word that came to me is "commitment". It is my intention to choose to spend my time and energy on things that commit to myself, my family and friends and the things that I love most.

    Do.
    Do more with my kids.
    Do more with my blog.
    Do more for me.
    Do less Tv.
    Do less procrastinating.
    Do better with my time.

I want to just do. I don't necessarily mean "do more" just DO something.

I am pretty sure my word is going to be fresh. Fresh start, fresh food, fresh ideas and perspectives. Trying to start some new good habits and not beat myself up for the old ones.

    Illuminate
I started with the word lighten or light, but that didn't quite capture everything I wanted from my word. I searched synonyms and considered brighten, but that seemed to focus too much on affecting others, rather than myself.
When I saw "illuminate," I knew I found my word. It's about using light to focus on what's important.
Thanks Ali for this wonderful gift of a project.
I have been doing it for five-ish years and really find it useful. My previous words include open, flow, home, paramount and horizon.

CREATE! I'm an aspiring writer and producer, and I have been lazy this past year, allowing myself to be distracted by a myriad of different things. So this coming year I wish to create: create time, shows, a story, just create and climb out of this funk I've been in. Let's get crackin!
