Sisters

One of my favorite parts about last weekend was getting to see my sister and have her come be a part of my adventure in Bellingham (which is in Washington, right near the Canadian boarder for those of you that were wondering). She drove up from Tacoma, browsed around while I taught, and then came to dinner with us at a very cool Southwestern spot.

We don't get to see each other too often. We keep in touch through email and the occasional phone call. Jess and I are just about 4 years apart in age. I was out of the house before she started high school. She has been through a lot in her 25 years. Highs and lows. Right now she is working on making decisions for herself. Looking inward. Figuring out what is best for her and the direction she wants to take her life. I admire her for her growth. For challenging herself. For just being her. Love that we are sisters - and that we are staying connected.

When we were growing up my Mom printed out this quote and hung it up around the house. It made quite an impression on me:

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on
life.
Attitude,
to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past,
than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than
successes, than what other people think or say or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company ...a church ...a home.

The
remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we
will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past ...we cannot
change the fact that people will act in a certain way.

We
cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the
one string we have, and that is our attitude ...I am convinced that
life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you ...we are in charge of our attitudes.

Love the quote Ali. One of my favorite attitude quotes is by Norman Vincent Peal:
"Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure. The way you think about a fact may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. You are overcome by the fact because you think you are."

I LOVE that quote!!! I am going to print that one and hang it up for my children to see. How funny that the perfect quote came by me today - I was talking about attitude/positiveness with my son this afternoon.

hi, thanks for the quote. this evening i was telling my husband how i sucked at stuff. he said he feels bad when i talk that way. that im too hard on myself. that i shouldnt feel that way because i dont suck, at all. i just kinda shrugged him off cuz i wanted to be in that state, sorry about myself and feeling like crap. after dinner i finally accepted that i am too hard on me. and reading your quote now, that attitude is everything, that we have a choice, that we cant change the past or the future, that it's how we react to what is happening around us, gives me a great boost to the morale, to the inside. you dont know me but i thank you. for posting this. you dont know how much this has helped. and will probably continue to help.
    :)

Interesting...I had a job interview today and while I was in the directors office, the phone rang and she took the call. So I was looking around and this very same saying was printed out and hanging on her wall. I read through it, agreed with it, and was pleased that it was written by Swindoll (a man that I consider a creditable source). Now I am presented with the saying again on your blog. So, I am printing it out and putting it up! Thank you.

My sister is 6 1/2 years old than me and while we live on opposite ends of the earth, we are amazingly close. There is nothing like the sisterly bond !! I can't wait until she is back home in Australia !!

Too funny that you should post this particular quote--one that is so near and dear to my heart. God actually brought me to this particular one in at a very critical point of my life, and it helped save my life, in a sense. Glad you shared it with others! It's so true, life is mostly how you react to things.
