Domesticity.

Feeling very domestic today. Even wearing my apron.

Visited my doctor again and scheduled my iodine uptake scan for the end of August. They will be checking to see what's up with my enlarged thyroid: figuring out what to do next (remove part or all of it or just wait and continue to measure it) and assessing whether the nodules are cancerous.

For the scan to see my thyroid correctly I get to go on a special low-iodine diet before testing (from today through up until the day of the test).

Things I can eat: fruits, fresh meats & poultry, and some vegetables (no broccoli, spinach, or turnip greens) and no more than 2 cups of dairy products per day. There are a bunch of things that are spelled out that I can't eat - focusing on what I can. Had to laugh to myself as I walked out of the office thinking this is what I should be eating anyway - nothing like doctor's orders and diagnosed health-issue to get me going in the right direction.

Basically it means that I am going to have to put a bit (understatement) more effort into preparing our meals around here. This can be nothing but a good thing for all of us. I have already become certifiably addicted to our local farmer's market so we are set on that front. It's a darn good time of year to have to rely on fresh fruits and vegetables - picked up local cantaloupe, carrots, tomatoes, and butter lettuce today.

To start off on the right foot I roasted a chicken this afternoon and chopped up a bunch of vegetables for easy snack access. Can't remember the last time I roasted a whole chicken. Planning to have some for dinner tonight and use the rest for salads later this week.

To make my day of domesticity complete I received a fabric order in the mail. I am going to sew myself a skirt (for real Mom). Now that should be an interesting adventure.

And the photo today? Mint tea (simply a mint leaf + hot water) - something I picked up while visiting with Florence in Amsterdam last year.

We've been trying to eat some lighter healthier meals this summer - cucumber sandwiches, portobello (sp) mushroom sandwiches and salmon baked with yellow squash and baby zucchini are a few of our favorites. Glad you are accepting your new tasks so cheerfully. Good luck, God bless, Enjoy! Like your fabric and pattern....haven't sewn around here for quite a while.

You can do it Ali!!! - I have had to do that diet several times - if you can make home made bread, use juice and it tastes great!!!! Peanuts in the shell, lots of fruits and veggies. Good luck - thinking about you

Interesting how many of our lives parallel each other... how small the world can be sometimes. I was at the doctor today and had lots of tests and bloodwork done and also was told I needed to follow a special diet!
Love the skirt pattern! I am taking sewing lessons in a few months so I can learn to sew before I have a baby!

No more than 2 cups of dairy a day? Hhmm. When I go in for my own TSH level testing in a week or so maybe I'll ask if I am overdoing the cow.
And yes, nothing like a health issue to unfurl the apron and dust off the roasting pan - lemon chicken for me, please. sigh.

Limiting can sometimes spark the greatest creativity. Removing things you are allowed to eat may bring about some beautiful, wholesome meals for your family and great sensory experiences in the preparation.
We've been working on authentic movement at my dance studio and limiting has produced some amazing things. No music/eyes closed. With fewer things to distract, you can really explore what's present.
    Hope you have some revelations!

Good luck with the diet Ali! Personally, I do better maintaining healthy eating when forced, as in this situation! Otherwise I go back and forth.
I'm hypo, have a goiter, and have had nothing further happen on that front except for changing the dosage of synthroid. Can't relate to the diet myself. Wishing you well. Will be checking in to see how you're doing.

its so odd the way things work out i guess. this is in relation to the thyroid issue. my mom had an enlarged thyroid and felt like it was getting larger, which it was. she was on medication for it and everything. and two years ago august we went to the emergency room 3 times in one month because she felt like she couldnt breathe. and then a year later they said she had thyroid cancer so they had to remove the thyroid. a whole long string of events to say it was a blessing in disguise because now it's not an issue at all. hope things work out!!

hey girl... please feel free to email me for more info, if you like on your thyroid adventure. i'm three years post thyroidectomy... and let me tell you.. what a Godsend. I have some good advice, info, research i've done, etc... so please feel free to get in touch. i was fortunate to opt for the surgery, since it wasn't until they got in there, they realized my thyroid had enlarged to four times the size and had begun to wrap itself around my vocal chords... good times.. always wondered why my voice was so hoarse! please keep in touch!

You are going to be a 'skinny mama' eating so healthy. I've been through the thyroid business... took medications. I'm off medications now and tests are good... I just have a fat neck genetically.
    There are worse things,

I am right there with you. I just had a physical and they found 3 nodules in my thyroid. I only have a 1/2 anyway as I had the other 1/2 removed about 12 years ago. They are just going to watch mine for now. That and I am on thyroid medication. It will all be good for you, just hang in there.

CUTE skirt!! And good for you, jumping head first into that diet! We eat a ton of fruits & vegies during the summer too, but I have to confess...some of it is because I'm too lazy to cook big meals during the summer! I'd rather be outside. Hang in there, this is good for all of you!

I think it was Stacy Julian who blogged about the site www.eatbetteramerica.com - anyway, I've made several of the recipes from that site and they are great. Lots of foods that you may be able to take advantage of - lots of fresh meats, veggies, etc. If you need some quick, not many ingredient recipes, check it out.

add some lemon to that hot water and mint, and you will increase bile production which metabolizes fat and cleans your liver...talk about being domestic! (yep mom, today I sewed a skirt and cleaned out my liver...:) )...cannot wait to get to Eugene to start our new lives...I live at our local farmers mkt, and cannot wait to check out the ones in our new digs.

In a stroke of feeling creative I bought the same pattern and a bunch of fabric like two weeks ago to make skirts. (I am not a sewer but for some reason this struck me as something I could make.) Super excited to break it out this weekend. Good luck with your project :)

Fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc...yep...the way we all should eat. Hard to follow it, though when the world offers so many tempting yummies. I have to eat a high protein diet, so I am with you. It is hard to be different, but well worth it. Good luck on your new adventure. Forgot to mention before also that I suffered from depression after the birth of my son, so I feel ya. Lovin the fabrics and the skirt...good luck with that. Someday, I will learn to sew. :) Keepin ya in my prayers.

I've seen a thyroid scan before. in pharmacy school, I did a rotation with a nuclear pharmacy that generates the radioactivity for various scan, one of which is for the thyroid. It's very cool actually. Once the iodine, which is tagged with a safe amount of radioactivity for the scan, is injected, you can see it move through your body to the thyroid gland. Good luck Ali, once you get this all under control, you'll begin to feel a lot better. just be patient with all the medication adjustments that are to come. it may take a little while for you doctor to find the right dose for you.
