Student of life.

When I teach my Week in the Life album workshop at CKU, I tell my students that I consider myself a student of life.

One of my basic human goals is to learn something new and different every day. Sometimes I actively look for a lesson, a word or words, etc, and other days I work on my patience and just let it happen when it is going to happen. Some days it is profound, but most days it is just something simple.

Each time I teach, I learn something from my students. Whether through a one-on-one conversation or from the group as a whole, there tends to be something that stands out.

In Nashville I had a student who was 73 years old. One of my favorite moments from the weekend was looking at the photos she took of herself each day (one of the assignments for the album) in front of her favorite place in her home - her bookshelves. As I stood there looking at her photos I was really touched by her simple presence in the classroom.

I want to be continuing to experience my life and still learning and playing when I am 73. I want to be traveling and playing with my girlfriends and creating and telling my stories. I was inspired by all of the women at that table - laughing, working hard, and enjoying their time together.

I also continue to learn about the amazing generosity of women. Thank you Tanya, Judy, Laura and company for organizing an Autism Speaks auction which raised over $2700. Fantastic.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your stories and your time with me this weekend. I hope you learned something about scrapbooking and about yourself.

I agree Ali... scrapbooking has taught me so much about life and about myself-what I like, what I dislike, what I want to remember, what matters to me, etc. Thanks for your perspective on this life changing hobby of ours.

Thank you Ali for an eye opening experience with your album track on Friday - It took me out of my comfort zone and I will take a new approach to constructing a page. This project has opened my eyes and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Hopefully I can get more of it done this coming weekend! :-) See you again next year!

    Ali,
I much enjoyed Saturday's album track. I was so excited about attending one of your classes and my first CKU...and I came away with so much more than I ever expected. The more I worked on the homework for the track, the more I realized that I was looking at my life from a different perspective than ever before. Thanks for making my first CKU an awesome experience...and some of the most fun days from a week in the life!

Thank you for inspiring both my girls with your honest stories of Autism. My oldest is getting a Masters in Education with a concentration on Autism. My youngest is getting a degree in Ed. and going on for a Masters in Speech Therapy. They both read your blog weekly.
You are inspiring two very gifted young women!

Learning something new is definitely a constant goal... not that it's in the front of my mind on a daily basis though. It should be!
So cool about your 73-year-old student. :)

It was a long 3 months from registering to class time for me. I was so totally thrilled to be able to finally meet you face to face. I found the homework very enlightening and rewarding to be able to sit with other ladies and get my week down and into perspective.
I so enjoyed your Saturday class, the ease with which you teach and make a large project into a fun experience. I can honestly say that 1 day with you in class in not enough. I finished most of my album that day, and can't wait to get the remaining pages done.
Thanks so much for being you. Love to you and the family.
