Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)

Threethings_books

Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:

True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.

Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).

Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wings by Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."

Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:

Kelly Rae Roberts is an amazingly talented artist and apparently
equally gifted as a writer as well. This book is a journey from her
soul right into yours. It's part journal, part sitting around getting
deep with your girlfriends, part interviews with other talented artists
and part art instruction. So very different from other art books, even
from the same publisher. It goes above and beyond and straight into
your heart & head, making you think about your own creativity.

And until you find your creative spirit, the how-to make art
sections are very clearly thought out and well written. I know that I
will be able duplicate even the pieces that had materials I've never
used before.

This book is a treasure that I know I will refer to again and again.

I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

Water Soluble Oil Pastels are so much fun to play with. You can draw with them and use paintbrushes to blend the colors or you can dip the tip in water and draw with it from there! Very vibrant colors in my art journal to make me happy!

my favorite creative technique lately is to create something digitally and then transferring it to something - fabric, canvas, etc via inkjet transfer.

Scrapbooking - I am ALL about the words and pictures, like you. But I would love something to encourage me to journey deeper inside and figure out MY creativity and how to express it in scrapbooking, quilting, guitar playing, cooking...

My favorite creative technique right now is stamping. I recently took a card making class to get back into the groove of things and it has really inspired me! Stamping has always been something I really love and it's feeling really good to be inspired again.

I'm scrapbooking "old school" lately. Some cardstock and some stickers...maybe a sheet or two of patterned paper. Just PLAYING for a change, not looking for the "next big thing".

I have really been enjoying making my scrapbooking more "eco-friendly" as of late...making paper flowers out of catalogs and newspaper and scraps. As well as painting all over my pages with bubble wrap!! :-) It has been a fun adventure converting things otherwise thrown away into works of art. :-) Thanks Ali!

I love acrylic paints - love to paint just about everything - chipboard, acrylic, paper, glass, canvas.....Then when you mix the colors wahoo what fun is that ! I also love the look of them standing all in rows in my cabinet - MM paints have such cute bottles , love them !! But when I am going to paint canvas I use the ones from Michaels , when they are on sale I seem to buy black , cream and Christmas red ~ they work for almost anything ! Love books - will head to Barnes and Noble if I don't win !! Happy Day

The book sounds wonderful ! My favorite technique right now is using my watercolor paints to color stamped images, and then cutting them out and glueing them onto paper as embellishments ( hope that makes sense ?)

Lately I've been into art journaling...in a very multi-media/altered art sort of way. Mostly just playing.
AND...very interesingly to me, I'm being drawn to my sewing machine. Something I usually only think about at Halloween. Hmmmm...

I really haven't had the time to explore my creativity lately - which is very frustrating! Scrapbooking is definitely where I like to explore - and I am itching to get back to it - especially my clear stamps. I can see so much versatility in them. Thanks for the giveaway!

    Ali,
Thanks for giving us an opportunity to win such great gifts. I would have to say that anything mixed media is my thing. I layer prints over prints (mostly monoprints), use a lot of gel medium and do a fair bit of image tranfers. I love it all!

I am not particularly drawn to a technique right now, however I am really into creating pages of different sizes! I got inspired by an article about organization and the next thing you know, I was doing whatever size felt right for the pictures...8x8, 6x12, even tried 8 1/2x11 landscape. That is why I LOVE ring albums so much! And the article said you could mix & match sizes within that same 12x12 album and then I did! Its been super fun and liberating! Oh wait, I am into the Heidi Swapp Masks...I forgot how much I loved them so after pulling them out again, I went & bought a bunch of new Krylon H2O colors!!
