Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)

Threethings_books

Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:

True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.

Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).

Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wings by Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."

Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:

Kelly Rae Roberts is an amazingly talented artist and apparently
equally gifted as a writer as well. This book is a journey from her
soul right into yours. It's part journal, part sitting around getting
deep with your girlfriends, part interviews with other talented artists
and part art instruction. So very different from other art books, even
from the same publisher. It goes above and beyond and straight into
your heart & head, making you think about your own creativity.

And until you find your creative spirit, the how-to make art
sections are very clearly thought out and well written. I know that I
will be able duplicate even the pieces that had materials I've never
used before.

This book is a treasure that I know I will refer to again and again.

I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

Right now I love using scrapbook supplies in my work environment (university campus housing). Bringing a personal and creative edge to my interactions with college students. Would love a copy of this book in helping to grow the students' creativity.

My creative thing lately has been ttv photography. Basicly, you shoot an image of the viewfinder of a vintage camera. I use a Vintage Kodak Duaflex II as my bottom camera. It has a very large viewfinder on the top of the camera. Then I record the image with a Canon Digi Rebel.
Here's a website that explains it better.

The photos are wonderfully grungy and distorted.

i have been doing a lot of hand cutting of patterned paper, something i never felt comfortable doing in the past, i didn't want to "waste" the paper by cutting it up...so i let it all go and i like the results

My favorite technique is layering. I love coming up with new ways to organize my paper on my layouts. I have also been really into altering items, especially pencil holders lately :-)

I'm actually really into painting right now and experimenting a lot with masks. I have a couple Heidi Swapp masks of hibiscus flowers and I'm creating a mini album of my Hawaiian vacation with them. I'm having a good time creating cool color blends but I can't seem to keep all the papers from warping from the paint. Any suggestions?

My favorite thing right now is stamping into polymer clay and adding mica powders. I am enjoying the color combinations and using the pieces for mosaics. I would love to win the Taking Flight book.

Thanks for the opportunity to win this book, sounds most awesome! I am a brochure, ticket stub, receipt, etc. collector and always try to use them in my scrapbook pages. I wanted to try something different so I used a framed canvas and TIm Holtz Fragments and made a great collage from the "stuff" I collected on my last trip to Alaska. It's my new favorite!!

I'm a pastel painter, and have always disliked the framing aspect of paintings---particularly pastels, so have been experimenting with painting pastels on canvas and working with pva size to "fix" the pastel paintings = no glass or frame needed! This is truly my latest creative technique and I am soooo jazzed!! Thanks for the opportunity to win Taking Flight---it seems to be a great book for all creative directions!

Letting go and embracing new philosophies -- a requirement for me as I'm in a beginning drawing class at the community college with 18 year old students (I'm so WAY older than them, and even the instructor, I think ;-)). The other thing is not comparing myself to the talents of others -- most students draw way better than me, but this is a beginning class so I'm in the right place -- stretching my wings and learning new stuff like the Nicolaides method -- and having a great time in the process.

Scrapbooking is my main focus - but playing with words has been a lot of fun lately - finding creative new ways to use words to tell my story. Wordart, poetry, typography, and other journaling techniques.

Creative technique: at the moment it's coloring with my almost two year old. She loves pencils, I can't get her to care about crayons or colored pencils so I use color and she uses my mechanical pencils.

Lately I've been trying to concentrate on my words and emotions on my scrapbook pages. I struggle with that a lot. Taking Flight seems to be just what I need to help me along.
In a few weeks my teenage daughter and I are taking a online mixed media class by Paulette Insall. Her paintings are fabulous and inspirational!
