Family Treasures
Meet Marie & Neil McDougall, my paternal grandparents.
Last night I got a message on Facebook from my cousin Rob (gotta love modern day communication). He's been going through hundreds of photos from my Dad's side of the family and recently started the process of scanning them. He uploaded the first batch of 100 and I went
through them all, image by image, with the biggest smile on my face.
This is my family.
My history.
My treasure.
I had no idea my cousin had been working on this project.
I actually feel kinda speechless.
So often I have looked through photos like these at antique stores and have wondered about the people and their stories and their families.
These are my people. My Dad is the little guy on the right in the photo above.
I love the ones like this where there is a group gathered. It would be cool to make a little book of the group photos over the years since I have a handful from my childhood through today.
So what am I going to do with these? I am not quite sure yet. Most likely they will be integrated into layouts/projects for my upcoming Big Picture class about scrapbooking Yesterday & Today (the timing could not have been much better). I am hoping to get some stories from my Dad and go from there. I would also love to enlarge a few of them (that first one for sure) to hang in my home.
These are really special treasures.
On another note, I am the Guest Blogger today over on Creating Keepsakes' blog. I did a little write-up about using color from your photos as a jumping off point for the other choices you make in putting together layouts.
Hope you have a great weekend! Giveaway post coming tomorrow morning.
it is itneresting how familiar all the photos look ... just like pix of my Dad and his family. Same looks, hair, shorts, styles. Will we look so alike 50 or so years from now in pix to our kids?

This is the story we need to scrap about, for the next generations! Precious and priceless! I have been going true old slides, that my Dad and grandfather took; so very nice to see part of our history! Enjoy!

What a great gift from your cousin! Glad you have your Dad to share the stories behind the photos. Lucky for Anna & Simon that these will be documented. I always feel that way at antique stores, but it's worse when I look at my own photos of my grandparents and think that there's no one alive to retell those stories so they can be written down.

I was sooo excited to see your post today because I AM DOING TO VERY SAME THING!! My grandmother was one of TWELVE siblings. She is 92 years old and the only one of the twelve still alive. I'm in the process of gathering pictures from all twelve siblings' relatives - scanning them, making some edits to correct damage, etc. We are having a big Horton Picture Pary next weekend to review all of them together and share as much as we know about all the photos. I have 286 photos so far. As soon as I have all the photos and information gathered I know I will want to scrap them. So I CANNOT WAIT to see what you come up with! And I am definitely excited about your upcoming class and hope you incorporate these older photos A LOT ;-) Thanks so much for sharing with us!

Love the old photos -- what a treasure. I am anxious to see what you do with them. I keep wanting to go throught the photos at my parents house -- not to sound dark, but I want to do it while they and my grandmother are still around so I can attach the stories to the photos.

those photos are amazing. what a wonderful thing your cousin did!
what is it about old, b&w photos that are so freakin' cool? like everyone is always having the BEST time!
I think sometimes my husband gets annoyed, or just doesn't understand, why I take so many photos, but this is our life, our history, and I hope someday my daughter & my grandchildren enjoy looking at our life as much as I enjoyed documenting it.

Wow, Ali. I think you bear a striking resemblance to your grandmother. Throw a pair of dark-rimmed glasses on her and it WOULD be you. Enjoy those photos - I know you'll do something wonderful with them! :o)

I plan on taking your BPS class and would LOVE you to incorporate heritage photos in some of those class projects. I've been working on scanning in my and my husbands family photos and it would be wonderful to create something with them.

I can only imagine the scale of this project he has taken on. On Father's Day I went through a suitcase of old pics with my dad. There was a LOT he didn't recall but those images of East Berlin and my dad at Texas A&M are incredible. Others of his family & my mothers fam, wow- true treasures!!

Love the family memories! My grandparents are 87 and 91, and for their 65th wedding anniversary, I asked my grandmother to write down the story of her and my grandfather. I have the letters that she wrote, and I took her text and incorporated it in with old family pictures. My digging unearthed a picture from 1887 of a family named Melbraaten taken in Minnesota (I'm a Calfornia girl). Who knew this would turn out to be my great-great-great Grandfather and his family! And that they would be related to ME!
I have since become the family historian, and have uploaded my book to Shutterfly (I created it digitally in PSE). The family is printing out copies and asking for more details. But I have that special feeling, knowing that the discovery was mine!

Vintage family photos are SUCH a treasure! My father-in-law recently gave me 9 photo albums that his mother had compiled and some of them go back to the 1930's! I told him that he may as well have handed me a chest full of gold - I'm so excited about them!
Congrats on obtaining some wonderful history!

Thanks Ali - Love this post. I have tons of these pictures from my paternal grandparents. They loved tio take pictures. The pictures really enhance my understanding of my grandmother. I wish I had something similar from my maternal grand parents.
I really appreciate your blog Ali.

I scanned boxes of old photos the last time I went to visit my parents. I LOVE them. Photos of my grandmother when she was a baby, my other grandparents while they were dating (she always looked like a flapper!), my parents in old studio & school photos that I'd never seen. I've been using them for birthday cards & gifts and am working on several projects for Christmas. Can't wait to see what you do with yours. Your blog is a great inspiration!
