Family Treasures

DOC250_Left5519

Meet Marie & Neil McDougall, my paternal grandparents.

Last night I got a message on Facebook from my cousin Rob (gotta love modern day communication). He's been going through hundreds of photos from my Dad's side of the family and recently started the process of scanning them. He uploaded the first batch of 100 and I went
through them all, image by image, with the biggest smile on my face.

This is my family.

My history.

My treasure.

I had no idea my cousin had been working on this project.

I actually feel kinda speechless.

So often I have looked through photos like these at antique stores and have wondered about the people and their stories and their families.

These are my people. My Dad is the little guy on the right in the photo above.

I love the ones like this where there is a group gathered. It would be cool to make a little book of the group photos over the years since I have a handful from my childhood through today.

These are my grandparents.

So what am I going to do with these? I am not quite sure yet. Most likely they will be integrated into layouts/projects for my upcoming Big Picture class about scrapbooking Yesterday & Today (the timing could not have been much better). I am hoping to get some stories from my Dad and go from there. I would also love to enlarge a few of them (that first one for sure) to hang in my home.

These are really special treasures.

Photography is so, so cool.

On another note, I am the Guest Blogger today over on Creating Keepsakes' blog. I did a little write-up about using color from your photos as a jumping off point for the other choices you make in putting together layouts.

Hope you have a great weekend! Giveaway post coming tomorrow morning.

That's awesome! I love visiting my grandpa and looking through the old photos - many have stories he tells me, and I have NOT recorded them! UGH! It would be good to pass them on, but it is also good when I get to spend time with him!
Thanks for sharing! Love the photo of Anna smiling yesterday!

I've been doing the same thing with old familyphoto's from both sides, when I'm finished the cd-roms with all those old pfoto's will make great decembergifts! I've been working on it for years and am trying to get it done this year!
Afterwards I will print them all and make something inbetween a 'normal'photoalbum and a scrapbookalbum. Your class might come in handy there ;-)
I still have 3 of my grandparents, 2 of them with trustable memories, to ask for the stories to go with them (which I have already been doing).

what a great treasure trove of family photos. you are so lucky to have them - especially for someone else to have done all the hard work of scanning.

Ali - I can't wait to see how you incorporate these photos into your pages. I have hundreds of old photos from my Dad's side of the family and have no idea how to use them in ancestry pages.

Rob did a wonderful scanning job. . . which brings up a point. maybe a guest tutorial on scanning heritage photos? I've done it and mine don't look as good as his. Thanks for sharing.

Last Novemeber's issue of CK had an article about asking your family questions during Thanksgiving. I took that idea a bit farther and had them fill out questions about growing up. It all started from finding a box filled with negatives from as early as 1900! I had some scaned from Scan Cafe and made a CK Shutterfly album. I added the vintage photos and then put everyone's answers in it. It was our Christmas present to my parents. Well, they opened it and was in shock to see a wedding photo on the front cover that they hadn't seen in 30 years. Needless to say they cried... it was priceless.

What's funny is that I've been going through some old photos my dad just put all on CD and mailed to me. OLD photos, some of my great, great grandparents. Postcards from the early 1900's. Letters. It was so neat to see pictures of my dad when he was little. My grandfather & uncle who I never knew. How they lived. I was really amazed at how many pictures they had since people didn't take them like they do now. He also had pictures of my uncle over in Vietnam with his dog he brought back, the uncle who died shortly after he came home, and his dog that I knew as a child after he died. I almost got teary eyed looking at all that history. I can't wait to put in in the pages of my albums!

That is so cool! You need to get a the photo of your grandparents in front of the house, have you and your hubby pose like they did and put them together on a layout!!
I love how they use to stand in front of the cars. we don't do that anymore? We need to.

I love old photos myself and always have, even as a young child.
I guess there is no doubt as to what your next big project will be when you get it so serendipitously sent to you!

This photo junkie is drooling over your family photos (in a non-icky-virtual-way, LOL)! Love the swimming shot -- too cool! Thanks so much for sharing!
Also, I didn't even know that CK had a blog -- I'll have to check it out! =)

What a treasure! To bring it around to modern days, seeing those photos from "Days Gone By" makes me realize what we are denying our descendents if we do not get in front of the camera to have ourselves and our relationships captured on film. My hubby is camera shy and I have very few pictures of us just being together. I was respecting his dislike of the camera, but now I see we are cheating our grandchildren. Hmm, I'll have to think of how to get him on board with the whole camera thing. Thnks for the wake up.

Aren't old family photos wonderful?! I can get lost for hours in them and never notice the passage of time. I have very few from my dad's family but quite a lot from my mother's side - sadly there are a lot (!!!) I can't identify. :(

How fabulous! How were they uploaded? They are so clear. I have a cousin who wound up with most of the family photos and I would like to get copies. I am not sure of the best way to get them. Suggestions?

It looks like "taking good pictures" is a gene that you inherited. These are some well-composed snapshots. So fun. Love the swimwear! :)

Love the HOT guys in bathing suits with your Grandmother - it shows you that time continues over and over into the future generations - that picture would be taken today - just with much smaller bathing suits.

So amazing. I have bunches of these to scan as well. You mentioned enlarging them. I would really like info on how to do this as the resolution is always a problem. I can't wait to see what you do with these. I haven't done too much with Big Picture yet, but I am so in line for this class! Thanks so much.
