AE : Inspirations

IT ALL COUNTS : Yesterday I was listening to the new Paperclipping Roundtable podcast and enjoyed hearing Stacy Julian talk about where she's at with scrapbooking right now. One of my favorite things she said is this, "it all counts." Meaning paper, digital, hybrid, photobooks, sharing images in online albums, etc - it all counts as a way to share, present, deal with, & preserve your memories. Totally worth listening to if you have a chance.

365 : I've been playing around a bit with a 365 project. Right now mine is a combination of words, photos, and stuff collected each day. I am using Becky Higgins Project Life kit as the base (I love those page protectors) and filling in with content as I go. I am trying to be really low-key with this project. I want it to be a place to collect bits of our life throughout the year. No stress. No high expectations. I also love that it can hold a combination of things vs. just being a purely photo project. Date on this photo was created using my Outline Days, Months, Years & Numbers Value Pack from Designer Digitals. I hope to show some images of my album in the coming weeks.

iPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY : Did you know that there are a bunch of apps out for the camera on your iphone? This post on Shutter Sisters by Stephanie Roberts details a few of them. I think it would be cool to add some of these photos into my 365 album.

THE GOOD GRIEF BLOG : This is a really inspirational blog, started by Amanda Probst, about scrapbooking loved ones who have passed on. Read the How It Works page here.

MY ONE LITTLE WORD : My word, story, is inspiring me. It's motivating me and moving me forward. One of the biggest things I am working on right now is connecting an old storyline of mine (being an athlete) with my current storyline.

HOW TO CREATE A PAPERLESS KITCHEN : Loved this article at Simple Mom.
We've been leaning towards paper-free in our kitchen with paper towels
being the last hold-out. I think reading this article may have pushed
me over the edge for this to be our last package of paper towels. I
actually love our cloth napkins (picked up at various places) and nice
plain white dishcloths/washcloths from Costco. We keep a small wire
basket in the kitchen for the dirty towels, wash-cloths and napkins -
when it's full they all get washed all together. Keeping it simple.

NEXT WEEK : I am working on a series of posts about getting started with digital scrapbooking and my personal process for creating digital layouts for next week (initially I was going to do a post this week but the Q&A started getting longer and longer and I'd like to add in a few other ideas as well). I've got a list of topics going - feel free to leave a question in the comments today. I will try my best to work answers into the posts next week.

    Hi Ali,
I am interested in the way to print out the digital pages. I have done a few and was a little disappointed in the finished look of the pages vs. all paper. What type of paper do you get your pages printed on??? Loving the 365 idea might want to play along on that one with you. thanks for the great post.

I made a calendar for the grandparents this holiday season. I created 12 different digital layouts. Some were designed by myself, others were from templates. The files were so big that the project almost crashed my computer. Is there a way to save digital files to keep the size down?

Hi Ali! I think I've pretty much read all the above comments (cause I like to see what others have to say). I think I've come up with one question that hasn't been asked yet...
Where do you save all these digi elements? A dedicated external hard drive maybe? I would expect that having photos, completed layouts, and all the artwork would "eat up" your computer's memory.
Thank you for doing what you do.

So glad you asked this question! I got so frustrated printing photo birthday party invitations last night because of the lines.

Me too! I've been saving them in a folder on the desktop but it's such an annoying step. I'd love to see your solution for this as well, Ali :)

    Hi Ali,
The timing on this is perfect. I would LOVE to try digital scrapbooking, but don't know where to start. I am specifically wondering about digital scrapbooking programs. Does everyone use photoshop or PSE? Are there alternatives? What are the advantages / disadvantages?
    THANK YOU!

I don't know when I started using cloth knapkins - way long time ago. We should have a catch all basket for dirties, but reality is we toss them to a spot in the kitchen that is convient to pick up an walk them to the washer at the back of the house. I use them to round out all sorts of laundry loads. We still go thru tons of paper towels. Not sure when those all get used up as I use the dishcloths and knapkins mostly.

Can't wait to read all of your digi tips. Simple, basic...that is what I need.
As far as the paperless kitchen...we get those huge stacks of washcloths and use them for most things. When they get gross, they go out in the garage for the industrial uses and then pitched. Each of my four kids has a color for their plate and cup. I think I may have to go get each of them their own matching napkin too. It cuts down on the number of cups, etc.
Thanks again for all you do!

I didn't see if these questions had been mentioned--
I notice that I kind of don't like digi pages because to me they lack that touchy-feely aspect--the warmth. Do you ever print on cardstock instead of photo paper to give them more of a warm look? And do you you use all that "drop shadow" stuff (I call it fancy stuff!) or do you just place & be done? What about embellishments--digital or do you use "real" embellishments on a digi page? THANKS!!!

    Hi Ali,
Have you read the book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller? It's about "story." You might enjoy it. I thought it was a fascinating non-fiction book.

    Love the paperless ideas/link!
I would like to know how you organize your digital product. I would also be interested in your step-by-step process, from getting the picture off your card through editing & saving, then adding to your digital page.
    Thanks for sharing!

I have loved looking at your hybrid pages for 2 years now. I finally received PSE8 (I'm on a Mac) for Christmas. I have tried a few times to sit down and play, but every time I do I get more frustrated! I also keep my photos in iPhoto and am not quite sure how to get them into PSE without dragging the onto the desktop and picking them up from there.Any instruction would be wonderful!
As for Anna's photo's from yesterday and today, too much cuteness, I can hardly stand it! It makes me want just 1 more :)

I know how powerful your amazing blog is and I have a favor to ask...
My dad and my whole family on his side are in Haiti right now and the situation over there is catastrophic.
Anything you can do here on your blog to call your readers to help the people of Haiti, will be a Godsend.
    Please do.
    Thanks in advance!!

I did and I loved it. It was one of my inspirations for my word this year. I finished it a few weeks back and am planning on reading it again.

Oh, Ali, thank you so much for doing a post on digi scrapping! I feel like I'm a pretty confident computer user, but digital scrapbooking is very intimidating to me. One thing I'd love to know is a glossary of terms - brushes, overlays, stamps etc. - and when they are used. Thanks!

Can't wait for your digi tips. I want to do more with PS Elements but I just get so overwhelmed when I try that I give up. I can't even imagine if I were using regular PS and not the scaled down Elements!

HI Ali - While I'm not new to scrapbooking, I am new to digital scrapbooking. I recently bought Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac, and hoping your posts on getting started with digital scrapbooking includes some hints for this! I'm really excited about learning about this. Thanks!

Thank you for you post today!! The good grief blog is just what I to needed to get started. My 2 month old nephew was murdered in our home a lil over a year ago and I wanted a way to have his memory on paper with pictures but never really wanted to get started. Thank you for the great ideas.

Digi-schmidgi, green-schmeen. What I want to know is how do you keep your laundry area so CLEAN? Mine is so linty/dusty I won't let my baby near it.

My question is, do you have to have expensive software to do digital? Is there a shareware program that is compatible with digital kits? Looking forward to learning more! :)

Hi, Ali! I am behind the times, I suppose, by just having a razr phone, so the camera is not that great, but I recently just printed all the pics off my phone. I had a lot, and while the quality is not that great on some of them, the memories behind the photos bring a smile to my face every time I see them.
I carry my camera with me, but there are times when I take a pic with my phone because I want to send it. Now I am deleting them off to start over again. And one of these days I'll get a new phone with a better camera, but until then, I'll keep clicking.
    Have a great weekend!
