Week In The Life | Share The Love

Hey guys – plans for 2011′s Week In The Life project are underway. It’s just about a month away from the start – July 25th through July 31st.

I’m working on new digital layered template sets (both 8.5×11 and 12×12) and I’m thinking about what I want my focus to be this year. The focus is always words + photos + a bit of stuff from life, but I think I might want to try to do even more writing this year.

Don’t let the fact that I just wrote MORE WRITING scare you off. That’s what I want to do…there’s so many different ways to approach this project and whatever way you decide to do it will be the right way for you at this point in time.

This project can be done digitally or with all traditional supplies or with a mix of both. For the last few years I’ve been doing a mix of both and that’s what I’ll be doing again this year in an 8.5 x 11 format. I’ll be sharing tutorials and such as we get closer – don’t worry about any of that right now.

For now, just get it on your calendar and maybe start thinking about whether there’s something different you’d like to incorporate this time if you’re a veteran of the project.

If you’re new to Week In The Life I highly recommend checking out all that I’ve written about it in the past few years. Check out the main page here.

As I prepare I wanted to invite you to share about the project on your blogs. Below you’ll find new banners for 2011. Please link to (it’s already included in the code listed below):

PLEASE NOTE | If you are having a problem posting the banner to your site, try manually entering the code vs. copying and pasting. There seems to be an issue with the quote marks and how they appear here.

PLEASE NOTE | Blogging software and how you go about adding a promo banner to your site is different from company to company. Here’s links to FAQ’s for a few of the popular sites: Blogger, Typepad, WordPress

I rediscovered your blog last year shortly after you completed a week in the life so I ended up doing it Mother’s Day week and it was perhaps my favorite project I did in 2010. I was thinking of making it a Mother’s Day week tradition but wanted to await the arrival of our second baby and thought I’d do it with you this summer. But we’re on vacation that week so I’ve decided next week will be our Week in the Life week. (not that you care about all these details) Mostly I wanted to thank you for the inspiration for this great project. It’s perfect for an on again off again scrapbooker/documenter such as myself!

    Hi Ali,

I will be traveling back home to Phoenix to see family during that time. Any suggestions on how to do week in the life while on vacation? How would I pack the supplies I would need or that?

    any help would be great!

Yay! Another week in the life! Last year was my first year and this year will be the first married year! :D I’m doing digital this year and want to do more writing too. Not necessarily about what I’m doing every day but about what I’m thinking and feeling. I was overwhelmed by taking pictures last year and will probably make the whole project a lot smaller than I did before. I’ll be finding some journaling inspiration in the mean time!

    Hi Ali,

I’m new to “Week in the Life,” but I want to plunge in this year!

I struggle with technology and wish to know what version of Photoshop Elements you’ll be using for your tutuorials. I want to follow your lessons closely, so I won’t mess up.

I’ll update my Photoshop Elements version (if I have to), so I can follow your lead.

    • ….
      Kristin A. said…

You are going to LOVE this project, Damiane! Have faith in yourself though, and your ability to make this project your own! Ali is AWESOME, but remember this is YOUR week, not hers.

    • ….
      Ali said…

For Elements I’m using version 6 (I think – I’ll double check when I’m on my other computer). Most of my tutorials have been done with that version.

But really, it’s less about technology and more about capturing your life. The technology can be an aide but it can also be a hindrance – don’t let it hinder you from simply taking photos and writing stuff down.

Last year was the first time I participated in Week in the Life and I LOVE IT! It truly is my favorite project I’ve done and ever since then I’ve been anxious to do it again. SO looking forward to it! A lot has changed since last April and I can’t wait to capture it in such detail. Good for you for wanting to incorporate more writing. I wrote an insane amount last year and know that I’ll do that again this year as that is just my nature.

Take care and blessings to you,

Yay!! I have been looking at “week in the life” for the last few years, but have never thought I would be organised enough etc, but this year I am just going to jump right in and do it! I love how you document everyday things, all those moments that we smile about or laugh at but forget a couple of weeks/months down the track. You are one word…INSPIRATIONAL :-)

Wow, that was quick – I just left a comment last week for a reminder of what week you had chosen for this year along with a request for a banner. Thanks so much for sharing. Last year I did mine digitally (my first photobook ever; I used your week in the life templates from the year before); I may go for a ‘paper’ version this year. Looking forward to seeing your ideas; they always inspire and will help me figure out what my approach will be.

Hi Linda – there are definitely people participating who either don’t have children or who have children that are now out of the house. What’s important about this project is really celebrating the life you are living right now – regardless of your surrounding circumstance. It’s about realizing that YOU and YOUR story are important and worth telling.

Do you know how many times you can re-install the software? Is there a limit? I own the software and it has only been used on my Mac. Thanks to you and/or anyone who can help.

oooh ~ do I / don’t I ??? what a dilemmma ~ loved this project last year. tempted as it will be a record of pregnancy week 35 but we’re just about to box up the house to let the builders in for two months and I’m loosing my workspace and most of our living space. trying to figure out how to be organised now so I can take part… any ideas?

    • ….
      Johanna said…

As I will be quite far along with my pregnancy as well, I can totally relate to your dilemma, but would definitely vote for participating somehow! Don’t you think it will be so crazy to look back at 7 days just shortly before another life enters this world? I do :) Packing and moving adds another whole dimension to it, so how about figuring out an extremely simple formula you want to stick to? I’m thinking along the lines of photos taken with a point-and-shoot or phone (or polaroid camera!) and some kind of pre-made journaling cards so you can simply jot down a few sentences a day. To make it easy, you could simply store all of your “stuff” in a folder with an envelope or sheet protector per day. I guess I wouldn’t worry about getting your photos printed every day and maybe just tuck the collection away until you find a moment to pull it all together. (See my other comment #29 below – I still have to assemble my last two years of participating and still want to do it again ;) ). Hope this helps!

I feel like a wounded veteran with this project – I have participated twice, but so far, not one of the weeks has made its way into an actual finished album! All my collections of year one are still hidden away in envelopes (notes on scraps of paper and all), year two I adapted your route of digital templates but still have to get ‘em printed. I will definitely participate again, but I’m just keeping it real ;)

    Hi Ali!
I want to share with you about a challenge. Fall is my favorite time of year so in 2006 I did a month long daily journal. Just as your project in a week I took a Target $1.oo album and journaled and few photos and included ephemera that fit the day of the writings. It was a challenge! The album size wad 4×6 no techno stuff like photoshop or digital brushes.I was amazed at the end result! I have moved two times since that album and came across it last week. I spent time going over the album and realized how lucky to have the chance to relive, laugh, critique and enjoy the piece of art. So this time I am excited to do a week in life with more photos and journaling, I love telling the story and have supporting photos and writing only enhances why I do this crazy thing called scrap booking…I like to think of myself as a life artist on the journey of Mother Earth. Once again thank you for your sharing and creative
expertise….and I still want to meet you at Creatvce Escape 2011 in Phoenix!

    Hugs & blessings

Ali, I really want to do this! EVERY year you do this I keep telling myself to just do it already and somehow I can never follow through. My question is, do you make your album ahead of time and then just fill in as you go?? I think it might help me stay on top of this project if I have my “plan of attack” already in motion. And it turns out my daughter got invited to go on vacation with a friend of hers for the second half of the week and I am concerned about that.. :-( I know she can include her own stuff but still…..

    • ….
      Ali said…

Hi – for this one I don’t make it in advance (but I do know where I’m heading with the project because I use the templates as a base). During the actual week of the project I ONLY focus on the photos, words, and gathering stuff – no putting it together. The following week I start the process of putting it together – that’s how it’s worked for me in the past.

    • ….
      Ali said…

And about your daughter being away part of the time…my suggestion to you is to focus more on YOU. What’s YOUR story from the week, what’s your life like – you can include bits about her (both being gone and then adding in content from her if you want) but why not make it more about you?

Ali – I can’t wait a week in the life is so much fun to do and to look back on. Your timing is interesting. Last year I was recovering from hip replacement surgery; it made for an interesting snapshot of life during recovery. This year I will still be in a cast healing from ankle surgery; at least by then I’ll be in a walking cast but might be a little dull as I can’t drive (right foot). Always fun to do and everyone enjoys looking back on the week (which will include our annivesary).

I came across WITL too late last year to do it “in real time” but did do it instead last July as our “Summer” version. Then, I did it again this past May as our “Spring/School” version since my daughter was just finishing up 8th grade and getting ready to go to high school. I enjoyed doing WITL even more so the second time around because I knew what to do and focused less on the mechanics (don’t forget the camera…save the ephemera…write down our activites and feelings, etc.) and more on just having fun documenting our daily details.

I don’t plan to actually DO WITL in July but will do it in the Fall, probably in October so that it will include her first high school activities and experiences. But, I will follow along in July though because I so Ali’s inspiration and gentle encouragement. Even if you only snap 2 or 3 photos a day and add a couple sentences of journaling each day, it’s an easy and fun way to scrapbook the little things our lives are made up of. I say, if you can’t do it the exact week that Ali does it, choose a week that works for you and follow along on her blog in the meantime for ideas and inspiration.
