One Little Word 2013

One Little Word necklace from Lisa Leonard.

My word for 2013 is open.

Last year I had a great story about how my word came to me. This year it was more of a whisper and to be honest I'm not really sure what it means for me right now, or what it will end up meaning for me 12-months from now. And I'm okay with that.

Open is an attitude and an approach. It's a reminder to live wholeheartedly, to enter the ring, to live the length and the width. It's how I want to tackle this year.

I love that open is an action & a re-action. I can act with an open heart; I can re-act with an open heart.

I want to be open to it all - the amazing and the challenging. Wide open.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2013. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

ONE LITTLE WORD WORKSHOP

Registration is open for 2013 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we  can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the  course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2013.

I brought up this idea at dinner and said (not quite jokingly) that my word should be unsubscribe! Partner says his will be archive. We're still tossing ideas around, both serious and funny. Thanks for the inspiration!

The theme for my church this year is to "Dream Again" and to put those dreams into action. So I think that "Dream" will be my word this year. Dreams can come true with some work and determination. For me, it is time to go back to doing the things that I loved as a child like playing my violin and singing.

My word is "revel". I have a kid who is finishing elementary school from Jan-June, and in the latter part of the year I have a senior in high school. Lots of firsts and lasts, but I want this to be positive and happy. I have debated "appreciate", "enjoy" and "experience". But I want to wallow in the wonderfulness of the moment. I don't often do that - more like I "experience" (also a consideration) the moment with reservations, thinking about what comes next - but I want to be in it and living it with abandonment. So I'm approaching joy with a bit of debauchery, a little selfishness, savoring it to the point of drunkenness. Is being that joyful really such a bad thing? I am going to throw back my head and REVEL in the moment!! It lightens my heart just to picture it in my mind!!

I have chosen the word - Simple. Everyday life can be so busy and complicated. I don't need any more complications in my life, I need more Simple things.

My word for this year is gratitude... I've been through a rough 2 years and I need a change in 2013.. I think starting with an attitude of gratitude is the beginning to launch into a year filled with surprises and happiness... I'm going for it.

I thought my word was going to be contentment but after some exploring I've decided I need to work on PERSEVERANCE first. Words that kept popping up for me was withstanding discouragement, difficulty & previous failure. And to do these things calmly, without complaint and a day by day decision not to give up.

My word is JOURNAL, I started off thinking of Storyteller, but then thought I didn't like the connection to fiction - I want to tell real life stories this year, get things down, before this period of my life is over. My kids are 9 and 11 and are growing up so fast! I want to stop time by documenting it-freezing this year-so I can refer back to it.
Interestingly my husband is a gear-head and a Journal is also defined as: "The part of a machine shaft or axle supported by a bearing" so that means with out a Journal, the wheels wont turn and there is nothing will move...
Extrapulate from that what you will!

I'm so excited to join this class for 2013. I am new to Ali and all that she brings with her approach to Memory Making and the present moment of it all.

My word for 2013 is "place". I've explored several words, but this one keeps coming back to me. I live in a place that I would not have chosen, but it's where I need to be. I would like to embrace it more and be able to tell a positive story about it - as opposed to 'living in exile' - as I have been. I also like the idea of reducing my stuff and having a place for everything. I look forward to exploring my place on the planet and how I might preserve it. Placing priority on health, love, relationships, and creativity will invite growth and peace. So that just scratches the surface. I can't wait for the inspiration and joy that is to come as I wander from place to place.

My word for 2013 is complete. Last year my word was focus & it did well for me. I am ADHD & focus is something I strive for. Complete is a bit of continuation of focus. This past year has been challenging for me & I need to keep myself working towards success of my school year. Complete this year is my mantra for now.

I am thinking of diligence. There are so many areas in my life where I just kinda let things go. It isn't a fun or pretty word, but I think it is one that I need to make mine in 2013.

This is my fourth year choosing a word and i am so excited about this year's word. it is simplicity. I thought of the word during a night where I was having a half-sleep, half-dream start to the night. I started to think about all of the ways that simplicity could improve my life this year and I am excited to see what it brings.

My word for 2013 is steadfast. I've been following your OLW for the past 2 years and have never followed through with my plans...too many irons in the fire. This year I kept coming back to "had I stayed focused, had I remembered, had I been dilligent".. then finally in my Bible reading God gave me ..steadfast ..it encompasses all I truly desire to be.. I ask for your prayers in my journey to becoming steadfast and I will also pray for you all. God bless.

    Ali,

Open was my word last year, and I have to say I think I did a good job of keeping it as a focal point. I haven't done a great job with OLW, so this year I"m going to incorporate it into Project Life....when my word finally reveals itself to me.

Happy New Year and have a fabulous 2013!
