One Little Word 2012

Poster print via Poster Inspired.

My word for 2012 is up.

It came to me one day last month while I was working in the kitchen and the kids were watching the movie Up. My initial connection to the word stems from the part towards the end where the old man is looking at the scrapbook his wife made and a note she wrote to him at the end which says something along the lines of "Thanks for the adventure. Now go have a new one." (Found the clip here.)

That's the attitude I'd like to be working towards and embracing in 2012 - giving thanks for the things that were great about my marriage and then moving forward and welcoming whatever is coming next.

Up | ready, eager, open, awake, into a happy mood

There were so many words I could have chosen for what I want for myself in 2012. This one simply feels like a good starting place. I will also be carrying three of my past words close to my heart again in 2012: light, story, and peace.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2012. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

In a couple of days I'll post a compilation of the words as an inspirational reminder to us all.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Above is an image of all my prompts from my album that I made for my One Little Word class at Big Picture in 2011.

Registration is open for 2012 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2012.

My word for 2012 is Balance - 2011 word was release which was a powerful one for me as I had to release a lot of 'stuff' this past year. Now it is time to find some balance in what I have found of value.

My word would be focus. This is hard for me to do as I seem to be going in many directions at once and don't accomplish a lot!

I have finally settled on intention for 2012. I want to cultivate a life that says at the end of the day, every day, no regrets. To me that doesn't mean living a life without mistep but instead being very intentional in everything I do, where I choose to spend my time, where I let my thoughts lead me, the words I say, the people and things I bring into my life, the food I put in my body, all of it. If I can carry with me in 2012 deliberate thought about the life I am crafting, at home, at work, with my children, with my husband, in my spirit then I think I will become a more authentic version of me and that is all I want in 2012.

I am choosing the word "perserverance". I received some really disappointing news right before Christmas. But I'm determined not to let that get me down. 2012 WILL be "the year". I will not let this setback stop me from accomplishing my dream.
BTW, I love you word and that movie, as well. I sob every time I see it. :)

This year is my first time to take part in the class. My word will be direction. It is something i do for myself really. I hope to find out what direction I want to go with my life except for being a mom and wife. I've been a stay-at-home mom for the last few years, and now I want to go back to work. Since finding a job has been challenging, it's time to think about what direction I want to focus on.

My word came to me a few weeks ago. It is 'Joy'. I know that true joy comes from within (from the Lord) and I have true joy but here lately, I have been lacking some joy in my life. I am struggling in some areas (not loving my job, some stressful things with some of our adult children, etc) with keeping a joyful attitude and living a joyful life. Several things have 'confirmed' that this is to be my word for 2012. I am excited about bringing this word to my life in the upcoming year.

Last year I chose the word Focus. I didn't focus very well as I missed 98% of the monthly activities for the class. For 2012 the word that keeps coming to me is Change. The thoughts with this word that have come to me: Attitude. Losing friends and family to death. Life without my closest friend(passed away 8-28-11). Physical change happening. Weight loss- the new me. Tired of clutter & disorganization. Change in spending habits.
I am excited for One Little Word 2012.

Still a toss-up between focus, strength or evolve... will have to see.. I also was a huge fan of the one little word workshop and would have paid twice as much. Since the prompts are the same for this year, I will probably just see what I will apply to 2012 and check in with Ali online throughout the year.

My word will be faith. I am using that word to remind me to have faith in myself that I can achieve the things I want to do. Have faith my dreams will come true. Have faith in other people and to remind myself they are there for me for than I know. Faith in God that although the last 2 years have been the worst he will get me through all of things we are going through. Faith that 2012 will be a better year.

I loved your OLW class last year and am trying to see if I can fit it into my schedule for this year. I have chosen Balance as my word this year because I feel I need a bit more balance in my life. Balance in my priorities, balance my time more effectively, emotional balance! To find a good balance for work, home and play.

    My word is gratitude.
As we enter 2012, I have a strong sense that the Lord is going to show me some amazing ways of being grateful for the many blessings he has bestowed upon us. Interestingly enough, I already have less of a 'want' for things than I have in a long time.
I'm excited to see the challenges you send our way to challenge us in engaging in our one little word!!! Thanks for the inspiration:)
