Looking For Non-Toy Stocking Ideas

Running errands and catching up on some stuff around here today and thinking about stocking stuffers. I would love to hear if you have any traditions/favorites that are not toys to go in a child's or an adult's stocking. Anything beyond books, movies, candy, oranges, etc?

Hope to have Days 7 & 8 of my December Daily up tomorrow.

Each year I use the photo from our holiday card and make a ornaments with it - one for me and one for each of the kids. I personalize each with the their name, the year and a little message. They each get one in their stockings so that when they are grown they will have an ornament collection (made by mom) and a photo journey of all their Christmases. They are only 5 and 3 but already they look forward to seeing what I've created for them.

This has been so much fun to read! In addition to some of the ideas already listed, our 12 month old will be getting her own CamelBak Water Bottle. The rest of us have our own and now it's her turn. They come in smaller sizes and fun colors and designs.

We like to do the necessary hygiene items--a new toothbrush, maybe some deoderant/shaving cream. The girls often get hair things or even earrings. Boys usually a new hairbrush or a flashlight. We like practical things--but with a fun twist. For instance, the toothbrush might be a character toothbrush, and the flashlight might be a headlight like those used on "The Amazing Race." My hubby also gets me an "end of the year" special magazine (think People or Entertainment Weekly). Art supplies are also popular.
    HTH!

For something really different at times I will get a gift certificate from www.kiva.org (microlending). They love going on the site and choosing which country and person they will lend their $25.00 to. Once it gets paid back they can continue to pick who they will lend it to next.

world market has these really cool sodas from japan. you press on the top to release a glass marble and carbonation upon opening it. they're really fun and around $2. too expensive to enjoy on a regular basis, but perfect for an extra little goodie in the stocking. my kids love them!

Every year I make mini ornament albums for each member of our family. I use four chipboard pieces and add several pictures from through out the year. My goal is to pass this tradition onto them. We have so much fun every year hanging them on the tree and enjoying the memories. These mini ornaments are always a favorite. Good luck on your stocking stuffer hunt.

We always put in a new toothbrush. I have 4 girls, so sometimes I'll do headbands, pony holders, etc. My kids LOVE anything travel-sized, so sometimes tiny bottles of things make an appearance. One year I picked up small scrapbooks (like 10 4x6 pages) at the Target dollar section -- those were a hit. Fun panties/undies/socks. Markers/crayons/pencils.
For my husband, last year I did a personalized Starbucks card -- it had a little cartoon guy on there that looked like him. I usually make him a 4x6 calendar with pics of our kids on it that goes in his stocking. This year, I'm thinking I might do a flash drive (we always seem to need those) and an iTunes card.

Stickers, a cool new pen or pencil (Lego for Simon?), a Super cool new toothbrush, an ornament with their name on it (of course you could make one), a map or scavenger hunt clues to find a hidden gift (if there are a bunch of people, it could be a race), coupons to trade in for kisses or other loving things, a photo they haven't seen of themselves before, a rolled up magazine that you tied with a ribbon, some sugared nuts

When I was little I always received a book and pencils. I have no idea what else I received, but that I do remember. So I put those items in my daughter's sock too.

Our traditions for the stocking are fruit, small piece of chocolate, a new toothbrush, tooth paste and for my oldest son deodorant. Sometimes it is a hairbrush or comb. The boys really look forward to seeing what will be on their toothbrushes. Santa picks out some really cool ones! I figure they get enough toys under the tree, so the stocking is for more practical items.

Fun socks, boxer shorts and undies, favorite candy bar, Wawa gift cards (a favorite convenience store - $5 gets a hoagie, or a couple hot chocolates, or gum for the road, etc.), little stretchy gloves, cause you always lose them, small books, a new ornament, new toothbrush, travel toothpaste, soap, lotion, chapstick (Burt's Bees fans in my house), little cookie packs, cd's and iTunes cards. My hubby always puts a kitchen gadget or two in mine. That's pretty much what will be in the stockings at our house!

I put a scrolled up peice of paper in the top of each family members stocking. On Christmas morning they open it first and it lists,"Your Gifts". I include a list of their talents and special qualities that make them unique. It's a fun way to start the day.
