One Little Word 2010

I am a fan of welcoming the new year with open arms. I love fresh starts, new opportunities, clean slates, possibilities.

Back in January 2007, as a way to celebrate these beginnings, I started a public tradition of choosing a single word to focus on over the course of the year.

Many of you are familiar with this tradition and have been joining me in selecting a new word each year. If this is your first time reading about the idea of one little word I recommend taking a few minutes to read my original post here.

Here's a look at my words from the past three years with links to the original posts.

2007 : Peace [ read my post for 2007 ]
2008 : Vitality [ read my post for 2008 ]
2009 : Nurture [ read my post for 2009 ]

Essentially the idea is to choose a word (or let it choose you) that has the potential to make an impact on your life.

Maybe you want to invite something or maybe you are hoping to subtract something. Maybe your word will be practical or hopeful or creative or fanciful. Maybe you need a big word, something in-your-face that will challenge you everyday. Maybe you need something smaller and quieter that will whisper gentle tidings as you make your way throughout the year.

Whatever word you end up with, make sure it is your word (not your sister's, mom's, partner's, child's, etc). You can share it publicly or keep it close to your heart.

My word for 2010 is STORY.

I'm planning to do a post with more details on my thoughts about this word on Wednesday (look for the finishing pages of my December Daily tomorrow). I am hoping to use my word as a springboard for a variety of different projects and inspirations, in my life and my scrapbooking, over the next 365 days.

Have you chosen your word yet?

For 2009 my word was GROW. I gave birth to my first child in May (a little baby girl, Charlotte!) and I grew physically, but in so many other ways as well. I knew that I would have to grow into my new role as a mother.
My word for 2010 is RENEW. I want to renew my mind, but reading more and perhaps returning back to school. I want to renew my spirit, but going out and enjoying nature more. I want to renew my love for my DH, as having a child has tested us. I want to renew my heart, by offering more of my time and service to those in need. I have also decided to RENEW all my scrapping stuff, and have resolved to not make any scrappy purchases in 2010....this is going to be an intersting year!

I know it has been listed before but FOCUS will be my word for 2010.
As I was talking with my BFF tonight and told her 2009 was a blur-- it sounded like the perfect word for this coming year.

I am choosing my word based on what I want most right now: peace. Peace for my boys in their relationships, in their nightly dreams, in their days. Peace for us as a family and an end to the conflict that keeps getting thrust into the middle of things. Peace for me and the freedom to just breathe. All good things will come from peace in our lives this year, if we can get there.

    My word is SERENITY
2009 was very stressful for a variety of reasons, and it didnt help that I tend to be one of those types who is always thinking and overthinking things either.
So in 2010 I need to create SERENITY in my life by learning how to relax more, learning how to play again and have fun doing it, creating more and not worrying about perfection. I need to be more committed to a budget and better about finances so I can feel SERENE about $$ where we stand every month. I need to be more organized and work on keeping the housework up so our home can feel more SERENE, and more relaxing for the whole family. I also need to be more SERENE as a person and not so worried all the time, because it really doesnt do me or anyone else any good if Im stressed all the time

After much thought our word for 2010 is ENJOY. Sometimes it feels like we are so busy just making it from wake up time to bed time with the little ones that we don't stop to truly enjoy the life we are living. There is so much to take in, relish, and be thankful for. I still can't believe my husband came up with the word. :)

    Ali,
My friends were talking about their word on FB and it reminded me to pick my word too. I couldn't for the life of me think of a word that was the direct opposite of procrastinate...Sooooo...I came up with Commit. I think it just may be the closest to what i want but is really the perfect word for me! Thanks, as always, for your inspiration!

My word for 2010 is STRENGTH. Emotional and physical strength are what I'm going for this year.

I'm new at this but my word is GROWTH.
I looked up it's definition in the dictionary and designed a little graphic to put on my desktop as well as having framed it and placed it on my desk where I can see it and be reminded of this word daily.
I am lucky enough to be able to watch my new baby girl continue her growth physically, intellectually, spiritually over this coming year.
I hope to have personal growth not just in mommyhood or wifely duties but in my person. I hope to take some classes, refine some skills and just... grow!
Thanks for the post and I wish you all much success with your One Little Words.

May sound odd but my word is MARISA. It's been a tough year for our family coming to terms with our 2 special needs children. I have been advocating long and hard and don't regret it at all. Except I forgot about me, Marisa. My health and my spirit is being neglected and this year I will put myself first to be stronger for our family. Thank you for opening up my eyes.

BEGIN . After 40+ years of working, I am beginning a new phase of my life's journey: retirement. Not since kindergarten have I had days to structure as I will...a rather daunting possibility but I'm so looking forward to this trip.

Great idea. Would you share your lesson plan? I would love to share it with my children's teachers. I know they would love it.

My word is CELEBRATE. It jumped out at me while I was in Disney World last week. Disney's catch phrase on most all of their 2010 clothing, etc. is "CELEBRATE EVERYDAY" and to me that's what I need to be doing this next year as I continue to hunt for a new job.

Hum ~ this has been a challenge. Since reading the post I have had so many words swirling around in my head, it felt like a new one every hour. Would it be courage, or giving, or blessing, or fortitude, or creativity, or reflection, or... or... or...?
In the end I have settled on CLARITY ~ to bring clarity ~ to seek clarity ~ to find clarity.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year

my word for 2010 is family. I fell I have to dedicate more of me to my husband and three lil ones. I've been so emerged in work, daily chores and dedicating my free time to scrapbooking that just a very little time remain to me to only be part of my family.

My word is engage...engage in life, don't stay on the sidelines. Engage. It's funny, I thought one of the Lisa Lenoard necklaces would be fun to have with this word, and found a One Little Word necklace when I got there. Best to everyone!

What a cool idea! I read about it on Pat Sloan's blog. What I really need to do next year is Focus...beginning with right now to get off the computer and Focus on getting things ready for tonight's small gathering with friends seeing out the old year and welcoming the new one :-)! I tend to fritter a lot of time away by getting sidetracked. FOCUS will be a great word for the New Year. Thanks so much for the inspiration...this is the first I've heard of this. Happy New Year to you all!

Ali, I just found your site from Pat Sloan's so this is my first year and I am inspired to live my word all year. My word for 2010 is going to be SIMPLIFY. I want to work on one project at a time, have less stuff, eat less and try to live more in the moment and enjoy what life is really all about and give up the rat race that "stuff" creates in my life. I am going to get busy today and make some scrapbook banners to place around the house to keep me on track and I look forward to following you here in 2010.
