One Little Word 2010

I am a fan of welcoming the new year with open arms. I love fresh starts, new opportunities, clean slates, possibilities.

Back in January 2007, as a way to celebrate these beginnings, I started a public tradition of choosing a single word to focus on over the course of the year.

Many of you are familiar with this tradition and have been joining me in selecting a new word each year. If this is your first time reading about the idea of one little word I recommend taking a few minutes to read my original post here.

Here's a look at my words from the past three years with links to the original posts.

2007 : Peace [ read my post for 2007 ]
2008 : Vitality [ read my post for 2008 ]
2009 : Nurture [ read my post for 2009 ]

Essentially the idea is to choose a word (or let it choose you) that has the potential to make an impact on your life.

Maybe you want to invite something or maybe you are hoping to subtract something. Maybe your word will be practical or hopeful or creative or fanciful. Maybe you need a big word, something in-your-face that will challenge you everyday. Maybe you need something smaller and quieter that will whisper gentle tidings as you make your way throughout the year.

Whatever word you end up with, make sure it is your word (not your sister's, mom's, partner's, child's, etc). You can share it publicly or keep it close to your heart.

My word for 2010 is STORY.

I'm planning to do a post with more details on my thoughts about this word on Wednesday (look for the finishing pages of my December Daily tomorrow). I am hoping to use my word as a springboard for a variety of different projects and inspirations, in my life and my scrapbooking, over the next 365 days.

Have you chosen your word yet?

Purpose..... thats my word for 2010.
We are all looking for our purpose in life and we may never know. But for the coming year my goal is to try to seek for it. To try everything and learn as much as I can...life is so short, id like to make the most out of it. I'd like to find my purpose in life... whatever it maybe.

For me, 2010 is all about "mend."
I've got a framed print hanging over my fireplace that reminds me to "Make do and mend," and that's what I've been trying to do, but 2010 feels like a fresh start and a new chance to forgive, forget, move on, pick up the pieces, and put them back together to form something new and different and workable. So yeah. Mend.

Hi Ali, I have been following your blog for a while and when I read about One Little Word a light went on in my head and I said 'this is exactly what I have been looking for' and I didn't even know it. I've been looking for a different way to bring in the new year as I believe that new years resolution don't work for a few years now and after my battle with cancer last year, for which I am clear at the moment, I have been wondering how to pull my self together and move on. One Little Word is perfect for this. My word is NURTURE. To nurture my soula nd body back to health, nurture my creativity and to nurture the relationships in my life.Thank you, thank you, thank you Ali

I tried and tried to pick a 'deep/meaningful' word; but GROW keeps coming into my thoughts. So, I hope this year will be full of growth: re-discovering my faith, spreading my wings artistically, and growing with my daughter and our lives together.
As always, thank you for the inspiration.

Wow, what a great concept. I have not seen this before but would like to try it this year too! My word is IMAGINE. Imagine the possibilities if I truly take the time to make time for myself instead of always being wife, mother, daughter, friend. I have just the picture to go with this too as I took a picture of the word IMAGINE that was crafted in wood. Thanks for sharing all... Happy New Year! Janet M

My goodness - how DID I miss this post? I love reading through all of these! I've often had a phrase or concept in mind, but this year I've got it down to one word: TRUST.
When you choose to trust, you choose to put aside fears. So, that's my choice for 2010. Trusting that all is how it is supposed to be. Trust in myself and abilities. Of course, that all comes from Trust in God from which is all springs from anyway. Lots of opportunities opening up for me and the main thing for me to remember is to choose TRUST over fear.

I think my word will be THRIVE. My first thought is survive, but I don't simply want to survive--though I do want to survive giving birth again--I want to improve myself and grow even more!

I just found your blog tonight, Dec. 3l, 2009. My word for 2010 is 'accomplish'. I have been procrastinating long enough and want to accomplish as much as I can in 2010. Thanks for sharing this idea, Ali.

    My word is JOY! :)
I like the one word idea so much better than a list of goals, because so much can surround that one goal alone! It can radiate down into everything else! :)

Commitment. Its easy to have resolves and goals and hopes but commitment makes them come true. It's the hard work behind the flowery sentiments. :)
