Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)

Threethings_books

Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:

True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.

Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).

Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wings by Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."

Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:

Kelly Rae Roberts is an amazingly talented artist and apparently
equally gifted as a writer as well. This book is a journey from her
soul right into yours. It's part journal, part sitting around getting
deep with your girlfriends, part interviews with other talented artists
and part art instruction. So very different from other art books, even
from the same publisher. It goes above and beyond and straight into
your heart & head, making you think about your own creativity.

And until you find your creative spirit, the how-to make art
sections are very clearly thought out and well written. I know that I
will be able duplicate even the pieces that had materials I've never
used before.

This book is a treasure that I know I will refer to again and again.

I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

I have been inspired by nature this late Summer/early Autumn and have been taking rubbings of various mediums from leaves and bark to signs and interesting textures (the side of our brickhouse, the pattern on an old trunk at an auction) and incorporating them into my scrapbooking and mixed media work. My creative technique lately has been dabbling in photography - angles and close-ups (filling the frame). I've had some amazing results with my small kodak!

Scrapbooking is my favourite creative outlet, followed by making mini albums. Quilting is also on my alltime favourite list. Sewing on paper is fine...have to stop now, don't wanna make an endless list :)
I try to create art and to enjoy the process.
    Thanks for your generousity!

I am never without my journal or journals, for that matter. I am finding it increasingly hard to travel without a "portable" studio in my bag for sketching. Finally starting to scan and work with some of my sketches in Photoshop to see where they will go! Love your blog! Kelly Rae is truly inspirational!

My favorite thing right now is painting. I love Claudine Hellmuth's instruction on "peeled paint" using vaseline. The pages done with this technique are beautiful. Everyone asks "how did you do that?" I don't tell them how easy it is.

OHHH I adore Kelly Rae Roberts!! I have been exploring the uses of gesso lately-altering plain cardstock, patterned papers, stamping over it,watercoloring over it-it just does amazing stuff to everyday supplies! Now I need a kick in the pants to actually DO SOMETHING with all of these papers I've created!

I am definitely taking more photos lately. I'm not very good at it (yet!), but seeing things from a different angle/perspective/place is something I have been trying in order to enhance my scrapbook pages a little more. Thanks for the opportunity Ali! :-)

my favorite creative technique is these days is quilting. I put my scrapping to the side so I could catch up. And while the machine is out I will try some sewing on my pages.

Thanks for the giveaway!! My favorite thing to do now involves my mission to be as 'green' as I can while indulging my scrapbooking obsession!! I keep ALL of my scraps and when I see a cool layout with flowers, or fleur-de-lis, or some other cool graphic, I grab a matching scrap, and hand draw it on the scrap, cut it out, and distress or doodle. I try and stay true to the concept with a little flair of my own. I love to re-use what would have been tossed and am excited to see I don't have to BUY everything I see. The project usually takes on more of my personality and view point rather than just another embellishment thrown onto the page. This seems to 'make' my pages something special. I also use my daughters crayon drawings (cutting them up for the color rather than the subject) to use as backgrounds and embellishemtns. Thanks again for the blog. I read it everyday!! Conni
