One Little Word 2010

I am a fan of welcoming the new year with open arms. I love fresh starts, new opportunities, clean slates, possibilities.

Back in January 2007, as a way to celebrate these beginnings, I started a public tradition of choosing a single word to focus on over the course of the year.

Many of you are familiar with this tradition and have been joining me in selecting a new word each year. If this is your first time reading about the idea of one little word I recommend taking a few minutes to read my original post here.

Here's a look at my words from the past three years with links to the original posts.

2007 : Peace [ read my post for 2007 ]
2008 : Vitality [ read my post for 2008 ]
2009 : Nurture [ read my post for 2009 ]

Essentially the idea is to choose a word (or let it choose you) that has the potential to make an impact on your life.

Maybe you want to invite something or maybe you are hoping to subtract something. Maybe your word will be practical or hopeful or creative or fanciful. Maybe you need a big word, something in-your-face that will challenge you everyday. Maybe you need something smaller and quieter that will whisper gentle tidings as you make your way throughout the year.

Whatever word you end up with, make sure it is your word (not your sister's, mom's, partner's, child's, etc). You can share it publicly or keep it close to your heart.

My word for 2010 is STORY.

I'm planning to do a post with more details on my thoughts about this word on Wednesday (look for the finishing pages of my December Daily tomorrow). I am hoping to use my word as a springboard for a variety of different projects and inspirations, in my life and my scrapbooking, over the next 365 days.

Have you chosen your word yet?

As for me, my word for 2010 is APPRECIATE. Too often, I take for granted the many things that the Lord has provided for me. I take for granted the incredible man to whom I am married and the two beautiful children who call me "mom". There are many other things that I oft times take for granted. So, I hope to more fully appreciate each of the blessings in my life.

thanks for sharing this link. I want to make my image one that I can be happy living in. Right now I live in too much skin, time to shed this weight and feel better about myself. I am going to give this a genuine effort. If it is for the Lord that may be the incentive I need.

My word is Organize. I thought of many others but as I thought and thought I keep coming back to this one because if I can focus on organize it will take care of all the other words that I had considered. I find it amazing how being organized can affect every aspect of life. Like time, entertaining, freedom, respect...I could go on and on. Thank you for this wonderful idea. Here is to a possitive (another word I considered) and Happy New Year. God Bless

I chose my word and ordered my necklace! My word for 2010 is: CREATE. I want to focus on expanding my creativity to help me be more frugal in the coming year. ie: I will make gifts instead of purchasing them; I will use up the craft supplies, fabrics, etc. that I have before purchasing new supplies; recycle household objects for craft time with my kids instead of spending a fortune at craft stores..... So that's my plan for 2010!!! Thank you for the inspiration!

I have chosen mine MOVE FORWARD I feel that the time has come to move forward in so many areas of my life, there are things that need to be left behind to help me move forward in others. Our family needs to map out some plans to help us to move forward together.
Thankyou so much for sharing this with us each year Ali xx

I have chosen a word each year as well. I have been doing this for a while and now am putting it all in my blog. I love it. It really is a springboard for newness in my life every year. This year's word is inspiration. I want to be an inspiration to others and I want to draw my inspiration from all that is around me. God gives us so many things that can inspire us if we just focused on them all of the time--how blessed we will be. 2010 is a year of inspiration for me. Happy New Year.

My word is PLAY. I am a perfectionist and I think the stress of making everything perfect takes the fun out of many things. This year I want to play - with my kids (instead of working on school stuff every night), with my preschool students during the day and with creativity (letting go of perfectionism and the dream of EVER catching up on my scrapbooking!)

I have pondered a short list of words before finally settling on what I wanted to use. I used FOCUS in 2008, GENTLE in 2009 and my word for 2010 will be KINDNESS.

My word for 2010 is "Progress". There are three areas of progress I want to make in 2010. I want to make progress with my scrapbooking this year. In 2009 we brought an old house we want to renovate and I'm looking forward to making progress on that. Also we are planning to add a purpose built Studio to the house. Exciting times ahead and lots of Progress to be made.

I'm still debating mine, but I'm liking HANDMADE. I won't make everything, but I'd like to have a better connection to the things my family and I eat, wear, and use. Even if it's adding embellishments to store-bought clothes, baking frozen pizza rather than ordering for delivery, etc. I want to be CONNECTED more.

    Hi there,
I've really enjoyed reading all the posts. I've thought a lot about my word for 2010. My word for 2009 was honesty, because I wanted to be more honest with myself.
For 2010 my word is balance. I'm always striving to find a balance between work and family and everything else, and that is a major goal for me for this year.
Looking forward to embracing the year ahead.

My word for 2010 will be Flourish - I considered persevere, persist, and endure - but they all seemed a little too grim! 2009 saw the end of my 17 year marriage as well as the death of my father, so I am definitely in a different place starting this year off - I am resolved to not only endure and get through but blossom and thrive - so Flourish it is!

My word for 2010 has been lingering in my mind for about a month. I find myself focusing on it already. The word is LISTEN. Listen better to others, Listen to my heart and what it tells me, Listen without interrupting. This is a perfect word for me this year. Thanks for doing this every year!
By the way Ali, your daughter is just precious pushing her blocks! My son turns 11 tomorrow and I sometimes long for those little days - they go way too fast!

I did this in 2008 but missed last year. I think for 2010 my word will be ACT ... not as in pretend but as in just do it ... I tend to procrastinate and lose my good intentions.

Colleen & Jamie, my word came to me tonight while I was putting my son to sleep. I had been so close, reaching for just the right thought. I had come up with a few words over the past couple of days but none of them were just right. Then, out of the quiet came "CHOOSE". That's it! So similar to yours I wanted to share! As you said Colleen I can choose...how to respond, what to say, what to eat, what to do, ... all year! Here's to our choices in 2010!

I love this idea! My word for 2010 is IMPROVE! I want to make some improvements in life. Mostly, my body, like many others out there, I want to lose weight. I've struggled with it for so long, but my daughter has been my biggest inspiration. I'm her role model, so I need to live the way I want to teach her to live. I also want to improve my scrapbooking and do some more creative projects (you're a big help in that area!). So, IMPROVE. Lots of good improvements coming my way for 2010!

My word for 2010 is BEST. I hate to admit it, but I tend to be lazy and not finish things I start. I want to start giving God--and everyone in my life--my very BEST in everything I do.
