Book Giveaway | The Beauty of Different by Karen Walrond

Today one person is going to receive a copy of Karen Walrond's lovely new hardcover book: The Beauty of Different.

Constantly bombarded with messages on how to think, how to feel, how to look, it can be very easy to fall into the mindset that we somehow fail as individuals, that we are not enough. But the truth is, those aspects of ourselves that make us individuals are actually the source of our own beauty, our super power. The Beauty of Different explores beauty in eight fresh ways and challenges the reader to revel in her own uniqueness. Combining beautiful imagery, portraiture, insightful commentary, essays, and interviews, this multisensory exploration of what is really beautiful provokes deeper self-discovery. Designed to connect and inspire, The Beauty of Different encourages the reader to reframe her differences, not as shortcomings, but as characteristics of distinction--maybe even superpowers.

Very simply put, this book is a wonderful combination of photos + words. It's interviews and stories addressing subjects such as adventure, individuality, spirituality, and imperfection, woven together with Karen's breathtaking photographs. It's the kind of book you can pick up anytime, read a section or a couple pages, and get inspired to tell your own stories related to the theme.

And the whole concept of different being beautiful...I'm wholeheartedly on board with that. Thank you God for different.

You can check out Karen's Beauty of Different blog here.

In addition, Karen recently came to my house and interviewed me about creativity for BlogHer's Own Your Beauty series. You read her thoughts on creativity and watch the video she created from my interview here.

Also, check out her project "Photovent 2010" - a really cool take on a photo garland. She's got a free download and instructions too.

I don't color my hair but I started (very slowly) going gray when I was in my mid 20's. Now in my 40's I have lots of white in with the dark brown. I've only once been mistaken for my son' grandmother but that was by a woman not much older than I who IS a grandmother. I just smiled.

I am different in that I am a very physically strong 5' woman. I am beautiful in my ability to inspire and support others to recognize and use their strengths.

This book would be a lovely tool in my work to support infant and toddler caregivers as they come to celebrate the beauty of their own differences as well as the infants, toddlers and families that they work with. Oh to win would be fun and to add to my wish list will be fine!

I love being by myself, I love to do out of the ordinary things, as long as it is legal. I am different, so what!

Something different: We are all different... I am unique.
Something beautiful: I love my life and I've been working really hard to create/keep memories... not just for me but also for my family.

Different- I'd rather read a good book (or even a bad book) than watch TV.

Beautiful- I have naturally curly hair.

I am continually stressing 'It's okay to be different' to my 16 year old daughter. It's tough for teens to be true to who they are and not conform. I would love to sgare this book with my daughter!

What you see is what you get with me. I am the same person, no matter who I'm with. Sadly, I think that is different...but can also be beautiful. :)

beautiful: I love to learn new things, especially things digital, then share that knowledge with family and friends. That keeps us all technically up-to-date.
Different: my life experiences make me unique, and I love to capture that through digital scrapbooking.

I am compelled to bring order out of chaos. Can't help myself. At Thanksgiving, our friends pulled out a heap of papers - the holiday recipes. By the end of the weekend, I had picked up a binder and page protectors and had filed all the recipes so they could be organized and protected. Everyone chuckled at me, but I couldn't leave them with that chaos. I even woke up thinking about how best to take care of the loose pages. The binder now has a place of honor with the rest of their recipe books. It may be quirky, but it is one way I am different and "beautiful."

I am currently bald and look a little like the stay-puff marshmallow woman, but the meds that cause all that are saving my life. So I'm rockin' the hats and trying not to cringe looking in the mirror.

Being different is so much more interesting than being copied.
I try to instill in my son that different is cool.
Different is being a single parent raising a son where everyone else is married!

I am sarcastic pretty much all the time. My humor is the way I have chosen over the years to "cope" with things. I feel comfortable with myself, just had to handle a lot of disfunction while growing up in our home ... old habits die hard you could say. I am ever the one cracking jokes as soon as ANY inkling of conflict or discourse arrises. This sounds like a wonderful book to add to my collection. I have all of the Erma Bombeck's and various others who view life through a synical/humorous/survivalist type approach. Thanks for the chance to win. Happy December 1st!
