Book Giveaway | The Beauty of Different by Karen Walrond

Today one person is going to receive a copy of Karen Walrond's lovely new hardcover book: The Beauty of Different.

Constantly bombarded with messages on how to think, how to feel, how to look, it can be very easy to fall into the mindset that we somehow fail as individuals, that we are not enough. But the truth is, those aspects of ourselves that make us individuals are actually the source of our own beauty, our super power. The Beauty of Different explores beauty in eight fresh ways and challenges the reader to revel in her own uniqueness. Combining beautiful imagery, portraiture, insightful commentary, essays, and interviews, this multisensory exploration of what is really beautiful provokes deeper self-discovery. Designed to connect and inspire, The Beauty of Different encourages the reader to reframe her differences, not as shortcomings, but as characteristics of distinction--maybe even superpowers.

Very simply put, this book is a wonderful combination of photos + words. It's interviews and stories addressing subjects such as adventure, individuality, spirituality, and imperfection, woven together with Karen's breathtaking photographs. It's the kind of book you can pick up anytime, read a section or a couple pages, and get inspired to tell your own stories related to the theme.

And the whole concept of different being beautiful...I'm wholeheartedly on board with that. Thank you God for different.

You can check out Karen's Beauty of Different blog here.

In addition, Karen recently came to my house and interviewed me about creativity for BlogHer's Own Your Beauty series. You read her thoughts on creativity and watch the video she created from my interview here.

Also, check out her project "Photovent 2010" - a really cool take on a photo garland. She's got a free download and instructions too.

I love DebC's comment ... I am God's child, so I'm beautiful. No one is exactly like me, so I'm different.
    Perfect!

I don't get my nails done. I don't wear nail polish. I don't dye my hair. I get it cut at a barber shop. I don't wear lipstick or eye shadow or mascara. I keep my makeup minimal. People do comment that my skin looks nice for being 55, and my hair is still mostly brown. I don't think anything I could get out of a bottle could make me look prettier.

What is different & beautiful about me? The older I get, the more I become ME & care less what people think or expect me to be. I do more in my life for me - because I am of value to those that love me, and my happiness is important to them. (At my very core - I'm still a mom - which involves LOTS of sacrifice. But, I am learning to take time for myself.)

Beautiful and Different - due to a prescription my mother took during pregnacy I have pinkie fingers which are short. They end at the main knuckle instead of the uppermost knuckle (bet your looking to see where your pinkies end). LOL!! I've never hidden it, but I've scared people numerous times in the winter when I wear gloves. The glove fingers will sometimes bend in odd directions and I'll hear an intake of breath. So I know I need to remove the gloves. It's funny, beautiful and uniquely me.

Different - I have always had really wrinkly hands. It used to bother me a lot as a child and I'm still self-conscious about it but at 35, I've come to accept it :)

Beautiful - I have given birth to two beautiful boys.

I am a strange combination. I love all types of crafts, but only work on them in the winter, since my other love is flyfishing. People find it strange but I find it wonderful that I can pursue passions that don't seem to fit together at all - and that a strong, independent and professional woman might sit by the side of a stream crocheting as she waits for the hatch!

One thing that makes me different is my super loud whistle! Everyone is amazed that I (a girl) can whistle like that at sports events! My boys make me beautiful! I know that I am a better person because I have them in my life!

So many ways I am different, but one way is that I love to do silly things for my co-workers like making paper hats for their birthday. No reason to be so drab and dull at work!

for me, beauty is in the whole messy lovely unkempt nature of the everyday. i don't even strive for perfection because it is so subjective that it becomes a meaningless concept. i am learning to know that i can be beautiful just in my own skin and for me that is a great difference that has come through many years of striving to be something i am not.
