One Little Word 2011

My 2011 necklace from the lovely Lisa Leonard. Get one for yourself here.

My word for 2011 is light.

This year my word sure seemed to choose me.

Most years I start thinking about my word for the following year in November or December. I think about it in passing and start listening, looking, and being open to the possibilities of a new word.

This year the word light seemed to be trying to catch my attention.

I found it in books, in magazines, in music, in conversations and in quiet moments.

So I'm going with it. It's already surprised, delighted, challenged and sparked some new things within me.

Some years I've had to look harder or listen longer or simply choose one that fit with what was on my mind and heart at that moment. There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2011. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word.

In a couple of days I'll post a compilation of the words as an inspirational reminder to us all.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

NEW FOR 2011 : ONE LITTLE WORD at BIG PICTURE CLASSES

I'm excited to be offering a brand new One Little Word online workshop through Big Picture Classes in 2011 as a way to connect with and honor our words throughout the year.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2011.

This will be my first year. I am very excited to embrace ONE WORD. My word will be "nourishing". This will apply to food, relationships, spiritual and soul searching activities, as well as what I watch or read. If it isn't truly nourishing, I don't need it...

I'm torn between two words: "perspective" (as in, I need to maintain a healthy one) or "drishti", the Sanskrit word referring to vision, fous, or point of view. I think both words capture the essence of what I feel I need to mindful about, it's just a matter of decidng on the word.

My word for 2011 is "breathe" because I need to remember to breathe more in between everything I am dealing with and remember things could always be so much worse.

The word I have selected is balance.
After practicing yoga for almost one year now, I find that this word really speaks to me. This year I intend to be mindful of striving for balance in all areas of my life. :-)

My word is Change. This word is something that I fear, change is just not something I handle very well. My husband and I will be moving at the start of the new year to a new town and I will find myself starting a new chapter....a possible new career choice, a new home, new friends, and maybe even the start of our family:) So I am going to embrace change, make it my word, and see where it takes me this year!!
    Happy New Year!!

In 2011, I want to "RECONNECT" with myself. I want to recall the times that provided the most joy and energy and concentrate in making those things that bring happiness to my life. This is the year about ME. Thanks Ali! I just signed up for your class.

My word is Hope. It's so full of possibility for what the new year brings. I love the word light too... YOU MUST READ "And There Was Light" the autobiography of Jacques Lusseyran. It's beautifully written and deeply moving.

    My word is "Enough"

This is my 4th year of choosing a word, and it really is transformative to choose it. I was talking to my darling husband about the words I was contemplating, and he said in the kindest way possible "enough....I think that should be your word". This has been a tough year and a year I'm even harder on myself than in the past, so I am taking his advice....enough....I have enough, I do enough, I am enough :)

i've chosen "ACCEPT." i've been beating myself up over things that are out of my control. i let people disappoint me because i expect too much from them (or we just think differently about how to do things). those things are beginning to eat at me and i've decided that i really need to focus on acceptance in two areas of my life. accepting that i have been dealt a certain hand, and i need to do what i can with it. and accepting that other people make mistakes and are learning as they go, too.

My word for 2011 is Simplify. It can be applied to nearly every area of my life right now. I am so happy that Ali is offering this class this year-I am looking forward to reflecting and journaling on what this word means to me and how to incorporate it into my life.

My word for 2011 is PROSPER

This is the first time I've chosen a word rather than a phrase or an idea and the first time I've made it public. I found the word and the word found me...it's not only for me personally but what I'd like to see for my family as well this year...we didn't do as well as we could have last year, and i/we need to get back on track personally, creatively, and financially....I want to see myself and my family PROSPER this year!

Thanks for the inspiration, my hubby got me your class for christmas and I can't wait to start!

    ACTION.

After reading all the wonderful comments, I changed my word about a hundred times. I have ended up at action. This will be the year that I act upon all the things I want--weight loss, more creativity, more learning.

My word is ACTION. I am a terrible procrastinator. Either I start something and don't finish. Or just think about doing something...and well that's all I do is think or talk about it...never doing. I want to change that and I want to get things done. Its been a struggle for me for years in every aspect of my life. See you in class :)

TECHNOLOGY.....seems like a strange word but this word has definitely been following me around for some time. My inquisitiveness for the new ideas that have been breaking ground recently have piqued my interest. My scrap booking style will remain grounded while The way I access the net for ideas, videos and networking will grow in other directions as I embark on a new relationship with my iPad!

My word for 2011 is REMEMBER. I want to seize the moment/day and remember them. It is so easy to cruise through the weeks and months without thinking. I truly want to remember the mundane, the simple, the routine of my life in a new way in 2011.
