December Daily 2010 | Day One

WELCOME TO DECEMBER DAILY 2010.

Even with all the preparation leading up to today I still can't really believe we are underway again.

For the first page in this album, just like in 2009, I chose to write a bit about our Advent calendars. Simon and Anna were both super excited to find new Advent calendars on the table. This is one of the things I love seeing in my December Daily from year to year - the repetition of traditions.

With the addition of the cover page (free download offered yesterday - grab it here) I decided to include a new transparent page (the star page - you can see it in the before image at the bottom of this post - is still the first page in the album) using a silver script transparency from Hambly. The "1" on top of the transparency is from The Girl's Paperie.

Before printing the 6x8 photo page (2, 4x6 photos on a 6x8 canvas) I added a Christmas twill across the middle.

The second page features a piece of packaging I cut out from the Playmobil Advent Calendar. This one had extra packaging vs. the Lego package - I would have cut that one up too if I could!

Using a sheet of cardstock that was twice as tall as the Playmobile packaging I created a "lift-up" page to include more room for journaling by folding it in half and adhering the Playmobile packaging to the front.

Here's what it looked like after I added my journaling.

I stitched around the inside to give a bit more of a "home" for the words and stamped a simple title using the Basic Uppercase letter stamps from Hero Arts. The little image of the Lego Advent Calendar was printed from Lego.com.

Here's a look at the before image:

I love the ideas you used to get the packaging on the album and hiding the jouraling. Sweet pictures of both kids. I can see the little snowman Simon made how cute. That was the big thing at our house. Our first snow so that of course was the story I told. I'm almost done with my first page. I'm ready for day 2.

Love your first page Ali - it is so great that we can finally start putting things/pictures and thoughts into our DD book. I love the process of hunting and gathering all the bits and pieces. The kids loved it when I pulled out the last three DD albums yeasterday. This is a great way of preserving our familys traditions for the holiday season. Thanks for all your inspiration.

Love it! And I have a question for you - what did you do with the original star transparency? Did you eliminate it or just move it?

Advent calendars are predestined to fill page one, aren't they! I received a surprise calendar from my mom filled with chocolate truffles made by a local confectionery. Delicious.

I can't believe it's here either! I found myself starting with the same theme as I did last year too. My theme is "a timely reminder", last year it was to appreciate the simple joys and this year it was to be thankful for our sunny weather during December. As much as I love the snow and the Christmas magic it brings I think sun works better for brightening my days.

It never occurred to me that 2 4x6's would be a 6x8! Next year I might ditch the 8x8 and go a little smaller.

I'm so glad you posted your link. Your first page is awesome. Love how much you got to show for your story. I'm hoping to have mine up later still playing with it but enjoying the process.

Ooh, now, Ali, that lift up page is a genius solution! I'm just sat here with so many bits from my first day, wondering how to incorporate them all (a pocket? an envelope?) and there you have it! A lift up page! That's why we all love you - you make things so easy!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you.

So cute for the first day's page! Love the kiddos. I too got my first page done yesterday with my son opening the first door of his chocolate advent calendar. He did NOT like the candy though, made a horrible face which I will scrap in a photo! Off and running into December we go. Today the post office to mail SANTA letters and then to the library to check out Christmas Stories for the month. Have a great day everyone!

My first page will be of my son opening his Lego Advent Calendar too! I didn't have to tell him to get up and get breakfast... he was waiting at the table staring at it while eating and begging to open it! :) We also have our family one that is a wooden lighthouse with activities for us to do together. He got to open day 1 on that too! Hopefully today, I'll print my pictures and get crackin on getting the page done. Thanks Ali!

Thank you so much for sharing about the Lego Advent Calendar a while back. My 8 year old son has just recently gotten into Legos and I had no idea they made the calendar until you posted about it. He LOVED opening up the door and building the Lego yesterday. I, too, did my first page about the advent calendar. I had him journal about his excitement under the photo I took. What a treasure this December Daily will be in years to come.

You know Ali, you always have the best with the least---I mean that in the truly most complimentary way. Your pages have so much less than mine but they say so much more. I know it's partially your talent, but I think those two kids have some to do with it, too! LOL!! Happy December Daily and thanks!

Love your Day 1 - quick question - are the photos on the left side on the back of your new 'title page'? I have downloaded the title page and I am assuming that the back of that is the start of day one. I love the 'lift' idea for journaling. I had so much go on here yesterday that I needed more space and this is a perfect idea. Thanks again for such great inspiration.

Yes - I adhered the large photo page to the new title page.

I love the lift-up idea to add more to the page. I'm making a small book, at 4"x6" (something I already had on hand). There's not much room, but using this idea really opens it up for me! And it looks like an advent calendar. Happy!

Wow! sorry about that last post....meant to say....

I'm so pleased about taking this journey again. I usually scrap our advent calendar but we've had such a strange start to our holiday season that I chose to scrap that instead. Check it out

Thank you for sharing the fact that December still seemed to sneak up on you, even with all the prep. I am feeling the same way here. But sticking to the idea of searching for one story/one image a day, and believing it will come.
