Music for Baby.
One of my recent projects was setting up a playlist for the ipod in Anna's room. It's nice to have some music on when we're hanging out in there or when she is trying to get to sleep.
I wanted a good mix of music: some new, some old, some for babies, but mostly mellow stuff that I like. A few of my favorites in the mix include:
Blackbird by Sarah McLachlan
Three Little Birds by Renee & Jeremy (special thanks to Deirdre - entire album is wonderful)
You Are My Sunshine by Elizabeth Mitchell
Imagine by Jack Johnson
Girl From The North Country by Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan
New Soul by Yael Naim
Here's a link to the full iMix: For Baby

As I was setting this up today I started thinking that documenting this would be a cool thing to do for Anna's baby album. I wondered if my Mom & Dad listened to music around the house when I was a baby and if they did, what were they into? I went to my Baby playlist on iTunes and hit print.
The cool thing I discovered is that in iTunes you can print out your playlist as a CD case and it can include some of the album cover images as well...perfect for then creating a page that showcases the songs on her babyhood. I printed the sheet you see above on photo paper and have it ready to add to a layout here on my workspace.
I would love to read your recommendations for good hang-out-with-a-baby music. Feel free to leave some of your favorites listed in the comments.
And the super cute felted bunny in the top photo? It is from a felted pattern called Wolly Bunnies designed by Marie
Mayhew available from The Yarnery. Seems like a perfect Easter or spring or new baby crafty project. I checked out their site and they also offer a full kit (vs. just the pattern) to felt two bunnies.
A warm welcome to my newest sponsors: Paper Relics and Scrapbook Circle. Look for giveaways from each of them later this month.
Love the bunny - so cute!!

I don't have babies anymore, but they just listened to whatever I was loving at the moment. I love Peter Paul and Mary for a good mellow sound. I'll have to check out your lists!

There is a lot by Jack Johnson that I think is suitable for a baby playlist :) especially the songs from his Curious George album. Enjoy! :)

Linda Ronstadt's "Dedicated to the one I love" album...
She sings a bunch of sweet songs....it always puts my kids to sleep without me listening to boring music. It is our quiet disk....

Have you heard Shelby Lynne's Just a Little Lovin', all songs inspired by Dusty Springfield? I think you would like Allison Krauss' Simple Love too.
P.S. The Yarnery is a hop, skip & a jump away from here!

The Lovely Years by Fisher is one of the most beautiful, life-affirming songs ever. My 2 year old loves it, she calls it the music box song since there is a part in the song that sounds like a music box. It's nice to see her singing, "I love the lovely years, no worries, no fears, oh what a great life." I am definately in the Lovely Years of my life and I hope to make each day worthwhile.

My kids, when they were babies, always like to listen to Steve Wariner. He's a Country singer. His music, even upbeat, is very soothing and his voice is smooth as well. He's a great person to listen to; he even still relaxes us after a hard day.

Our favorite for the twins was the Martha Stewart Baby: Sleepytime cd. Various artists. The three fave songs from the cd were 1) "Home" by Jenny Bruce, 2) "Takes My Breath Away" by Tuck & Patti, and 3) "Baby Mine" by Alison Krauss.

We listened to a lot of John Denver when my daughter was a baby (almost 34 years ago).

Ali, for my daughter I have several of the Rockabye Baby CDs, which are instrumental versions of songs by real bands and artists. We have The Beatles, The Beach Boys, U2, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and Radiohead, but there are others, too. I also have a Johnny Cash one.
For a little more upbeat music I absolutely adore The Laurie Berkner Band. She writes fun and easy childrens music and the songs are so catchy that I find myself singing them to my daughter all the time. I definitley highly recommend you check it out!

I second the Jack Johnson Curious George CD. It's in my girls CD player now. When she was a couple of months old we would play Band of Horses and dance with her everynight to get her to fall asleep. That CD will forever bring me back to those nights - it makes me emotional even now! I also love Coldplay! We like Blackbird too, but we listen to the Dave Matthews version. These Are the Days by Van Morrison reminds me of the scene from 9 months at the end when Hugh Grant is dancing with the baby. And finally, a friend made a mix for my girl when she was born that inlcudes Father and Daughter by Paul Simon... AH...!

I really like 1234 by Fiest. It's a little more upbeat but still mellow and simple for babies. My little girl loves the "la, la, la" parts.

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole" That was our fave too! Really. . .we listened to it over and over. I also had some Josh Groban songs on my baby playlist and Frank Sinatra. The Somewhere over the Rainbow song (also known as the Hawaiian lullaby) was our fave though. =)

My current favorite songs right now have the most beautiful soft music (and the lyrics are so lovely!):
Samson by Regina Spektor
The Minnow And The Trout by A Fine Frenzy
They make me swoon and they'd be the perfect background for a baby, in my opinion. =)
