Music for Baby.

Annamusic

One of my recent projects was setting up a playlist for the ipod in Anna's room. It's nice to have some music on when we're hanging out in there or when she is trying to get to sleep.

I wanted a good mix of music: some new, some old, some for babies, but mostly mellow stuff that I like. A few of my favorites in the mix include:

Sarah McLachlan - Too Cool for School - Mixtape for Kids - Blackbird Blackbird by Sarah McLachlan
Renee & Jeremy - It's a Big World - Three Little Birds Three Little Birds by Renee & Jeremy (special thanks to Deirdre - entire album is wonderful)
Elizabeth Mitchell - You Are My Sunshine - You Are My Sunshine (Pt. 1) You Are My Sunshine by Elizabeth Mitchell
Jack Johnson - Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur - Imagine Imagine by Jack Johnson
Johnny Cash with Bob Dylan - The Essential Johnny Cash - Girl from the North Country Girl From The North Country by Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan
Yael Naïm - Yael Naïm - New Soul New Soul by Yael Naim

Here's a link to the full iMix: For Baby

As I was setting this up today I started thinking that documenting this would be a cool thing to do for Anna's baby album. I wondered if my Mom & Dad listened to music around the house when I was a baby and if they did, what were they into? I went to my Baby playlist on iTunes and hit print.

Printing

The cool thing I discovered is that in iTunes you can print out your playlist as a CD case and it can include some of the album cover images as well...perfect for then creating a page that showcases the songs on her babyhood. I printed the sheet you see above on photo paper and have it ready to add to a layout here on my workspace.

I would love to read your recommendations for good hang-out-with-a-baby music. Feel free to leave some of your favorites listed in the comments.

And the super cute felted bunny in the top photo? It is from a felted pattern called Wolly Bunnies designed by Marie
Mayhew
available from The Yarnery. Seems like a perfect Easter or spring or new baby crafty project. I checked out their site and they also offer a full kit (vs. just the pattern) to felt two bunnies.

A warm welcome to my newest sponsors: Paper Relics and Scrapbook Circle. Look for giveaways from each of them later this month.

I couldn't get the list downloaded from iTunes here in Australia so last night downloaded the songs individually! Also added All I Want is You by Barry Louis Polisar - this is the song our daughter and son-in-law left the church to after their marriage in November last year - so cute and typical of them (sweet, funny and so in love) Everyone just left laughing. I am going to gift this playlist to both my daughters (23 and 26 years old!) There is no age limit on expressing love, musically :)

Hi Ali, This comment is a little overdue, but I had some songs to share too. I made both of my sons playlists...here were some of my favorite baby tunes:
The Storms are on the Ocean by Ollabelle; Lullaby for a Stormy Night by Vienna Teng; (Please, if you don't know these, they are so worth a listen!) Also, You've Got Growin Up To Do by Joshua Radin; I Don't Know Why by Shawn Colvin; The One Who Knows by Dar Willams (a great parenting song).
As my sons got older and changed, I kept adding music. It's such a fun thing to look back on what got added when and think about what the songs mean to you.

Here are some songs I added in addition to many of the songs suggested by Ali and everyone else. I loved making a playlist with such a large variety of artists, from Sarah McLachlan to Bob Marley to Green Day!
Birds & Ships / Natalie Merchant and Billy Bragg
    Butterfly Kisses / Bob Carlisle
Dance With My Father / Luther Vandross
Time of Your Life / Green Day
I Will Love You / Fisher
Time After Time / Sarah McLachlan & Cyndi Lauper
    Crazy Love / Van Morrison
    True Colors / Cindy Lauper
I Love You / Sarah McLachlan

What a great compilation of some fantastic songs for babies! I am going to make a huge playlist right now. My favorite was Dixie Chicks "Lullaby" It's beautiful. Her voice puts me to sleep. I didn't do this for my daughter, but will definitely do it for the next baby.
