Music for Baby.

Annamusic

One of my recent projects was setting up a playlist for the ipod in Anna's room. It's nice to have some music on when we're hanging out in there or when she is trying to get to sleep.

I wanted a good mix of music: some new, some old, some for babies, but mostly mellow stuff that I like. A few of my favorites in the mix include:

Sarah McLachlan - Too Cool for School - Mixtape for Kids - Blackbird Blackbird by Sarah McLachlan
Renee & Jeremy - It's a Big World - Three Little Birds Three Little Birds by Renee & Jeremy (special thanks to Deirdre - entire album is wonderful)
Elizabeth Mitchell - You Are My Sunshine - You Are My Sunshine (Pt. 1) You Are My Sunshine by Elizabeth Mitchell
Jack Johnson - Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur - Imagine Imagine by Jack Johnson
Johnny Cash with Bob Dylan - The Essential Johnny Cash - Girl from the North Country Girl From The North Country by Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan
Yael Naïm - Yael Naïm - New Soul New Soul by Yael Naim

As I was setting this up today I started thinking that documenting this would be a cool thing to do for Anna's baby album. I wondered if my Mom & Dad listened to music around the house when I was a baby and if they did, what were they into? I went to my Baby playlist on iTunes and hit print.

Printing

The cool thing I discovered is that in iTunes you can print out your playlist as a CD case and it can include some of the album cover images as well...perfect for then creating a page that showcases the songs on her babyhood. I printed the sheet you see above on photo paper and have it ready to add to a layout here on my workspace.

I would love to read your recommendations for good hang-out-with-a-baby music. Feel free to leave some of your favorites listed in the comments.

And the super cute felted bunny in the top photo? It is from a felted pattern called Wolly Bunnies designed by Marie
Mayhew
available from The Yarnery. Seems like a perfect Easter or spring or new baby crafty project. I checked out their site and they also offer a full kit (vs. just the pattern) to felt two bunnies.

A warm welcome to my newest sponsors: Paper Relics and Scrapbook Circle. Look for giveaways from each of them later this month.

    As far as for around the house when he was a wee bit, just whatever was on the radio - although he seemed to have a preference for the oldies station... he liked his 50's and 60's music LOL
    Now anything that he can wiggle his little butt to, he likes.
    But for quiet times as a newborn and even now 20 months later... he has always listened to Rockaby baby cd's- lullaby renditions of different rock bands... Nick's favorite is the Eagles, Radiohead and No Doubt
    They have tons of others including Metallica, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, AC/DC, Coldplay, The Cure, Floyd, Zepplin, U2 and the Rolling Stones... there are more but I can't think of all of them.. here is a link to the complete list
    http://www.rockabyebabymusic.com/ecom2/index.php/catalog/category/view/limit/all/p/1/id/3/
    As soon as we turn those on, my son either climbs up on the couch to snuggle with me... or goes in his room and snuggles in his quiet area :)

    What a great idea....I print out the itunes covers all the time, and it never occurred to me use one on a scrapbook page.
    I have some lovely songs to recommend:
    1. "I Bid You Goodnight" - Nicolette Larson from her "Sleep, Baby Sleep" album with Linda Ronstadt doing the harmony;
    2. "Little Road to Bethlehem" - Shawn Colvin from the "Holiday Songs and Lullabies" album;
    3. "Watching the River Run" by Loggins and Messina;
    4. "Halley Came to Jackson" by Mary Chapin Carpenter (one of my all-time favorites).
    My twenty year old still loves all these songs. Have fun!

    Ok, so I just read through every comment--LOL No one mentioned my favorite artist which is Jim Brickman. His piano playing is so wonderful and he has a Disney Hits CD that I listen to before bed. And I'm 35!

    Hi Ali!
    I love this post as I am a nut about music for my babies. I love so many of the same songs you have for your precious little one. I must recommend "In My Arms" by Plumb. AMAZING. I am hopelessly devoted to Bruce Springsteen so my babies are growing up with his music. I love acoustic Thunder Road and Born to Run when they are tiny. My two year old sings "Girls in their Summer Clothes!" Too cute! Thanks for sharing!

    Also, anything by Enya would be perfect for baby. My faves of hers are Orinico Flow, Only Time, Amid the Falling Snow and Carribean Blue. Those are song titles and not album titles.

    I love that Renee and Jeremy album. Welcome to this World and We Are One can totally bring tears to my eyes.
    Other recommendations: Dean Jones' album, Napper's Delight; Israel Kamakawiwo'ole song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World (we played this song the second Lyra was born); and The Terrible Twos song Littlest Houdini
    I also heartily recommend checking out the site Fids and Kamily, an awesome source for kids music that you'll love to listen to even more than they do.

    I love Capri by Colbie Caillat. Perfect for a baby girl. It made me a bit weepy the first couple months though, music always got the baby blues in gear for me. Congratulations again and enjoy :)

    I love "Push!" It was going to be the song that my husband and I were going to dance to at our wedding, but a bunch of mix-up happened and the DJ didn't get it.
    We ended up dancing to "Faithfully" by Journey. Just as well. (:

    Some of my all time farvorite baby listening songs are by Kenny Loggins. Return to Pooh corner has great songs, many of which he wrote for his children.

    What a great idea! I made a small 12 page album with a picture for each month of daughter's first year and the lyrics to the lullabyes we sang her. Having a CD of the songs would be a great addition.

    I love your list! My girls' favorites were "In My Life" from the Beatles and "Never Alone" by Jim Brickman with Sara Evans. The lyrics just said everything I want them to know. They still ask for both songs several times a week when we're getting ready for bed and we sing them together.
