Music for Baby.
One of my recent projects was setting up a playlist for the ipod in Anna's room. It's nice to have some music on when we're hanging out in there or when she is trying to get to sleep.
I wanted a good mix of music: some new, some old, some for babies, but mostly mellow stuff that I like. A few of my favorites in the mix include:
Blackbird by Sarah McLachlan
Three Little Birds by Renee & Jeremy (special thanks to Deirdre - entire album is wonderful)
You Are My Sunshine by Elizabeth Mitchell
Imagine by Jack Johnson
Girl From The North Country by Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan
New Soul by Yael Naim
Here's a link to the full iMix: For Baby

As I was setting this up today I started thinking that documenting this would be a cool thing to do for Anna's baby album. I wondered if my Mom & Dad listened to music around the house when I was a baby and if they did, what were they into? I went to my Baby playlist on iTunes and hit print.
The cool thing I discovered is that in iTunes you can print out your playlist as a CD case and it can include some of the album cover images as well...perfect for then creating a page that showcases the songs on her babyhood. I printed the sheet you see above on photo paper and have it ready to add to a layout here on my workspace.
I would love to read your recommendations for good hang-out-with-a-baby music. Feel free to leave some of your favorites listed in the comments.
And the super cute felted bunny in the top photo? It is from a felted pattern called Wolly Bunnies designed by Marie
Mayhew available from The Yarnery. Seems like a perfect Easter or spring or new baby crafty project. I checked out their site and they also offer a full kit (vs. just the pattern) to felt two bunnies.
A warm welcome to my newest sponsors: Paper Relics and Scrapbook Circle. Look for giveaways from each of them later this month.
Hi,
We created a playlist for our son when he was born as well. Here are a couple more ideas:
Miracle- Sarah Maclachlan
Magnificent- U2
Miracle Drug- U2

Ali, you have got to hear "May the Lord Bless and Keep You" by Andrew Peterson! He wrote it for his son. So sweet!

Well, my baby is now 17 years old and graduating from high school this time next year. I am gathering stuff for an album about her as a gift and I am so excited to print her playlist from itunes! That will make a great page about her music right now. I wish I could remember what I would have put on my ipod in 1979 when I was a senior in high school! Thanks for a great idea!

I highly recommend Ingrid Michaelson - she's a wonderful musician, her songs are intriguingly simple and true. Some are good for quiet time ("Breakable", "Keep Breathing") and some are made for dancing and singing along ("Be okay", "Far away", "The hat"). Or both! Oh, the beauty.

Ali, I think you would like the song "Sweet Sweet Baby" by Michelle Featherstone. It's from the album "Fallen Down." You can find it on iTunes. It's a very mellow, soothing song with a good message. As a new mommy myself, it makes me teary when I hear it! :)

Such a wonderful idea, and what a great bit of personal and cultural history Anna will have. This had reminded me of so many artists and songs I love!
One of my favorite songs is Wilco's "My Darling". Perfect little love song to a baby.
Thanks for sharing this, Ali!

I had to go hunt for it, but I found it... And I'm didn't read through the other comments so I'm not even sure if it has already been suggested. I'm sure the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow has been suggested, but not sure if Israel Kamakawiwo'ole version has been suggested to you. He is no longer with us, but his rendition of this song is so beautiful and so sweet. I've used it twice in projects I've done for family. First when on a DVD for my daughters graduation from HS and second as background music on a DVD I did for my parents 50th anniversary. And yes you can get it on Itunes....
Hugs
Kelly

I have a cd called "Baby Beatles" and it is a bunch of great Beatles songs done in lullaby form. I love love love it and even have it playing in my 5th grade class as some soothing music while the students are entering the room. :0)

Debussy wrote many beautiful pieces that are very conducive to relaxing and sleeping. The Bach cello suites are wonderful. You also cannot go wrong with good old-fashioned silence at bedtime.

My husband & I decided to name our daughter Delaney, after hearing a Jimmy Buffett song, "Delaney Talks to Statues." It's on his Fruitcakes CD. He wrote the song about his daughter, Delaney, when she was 2. In the song, Delaney is a free spirit living on a boat or a beach somewhere. We loved how he talked about his daughter and my husband sang the song to my belly every night. Our Delaney turned 8 last week and "her song" has always been her favorite!

I set up a baby book with the title of each page being a song. So the first page is titled "Beautiful Day" (by U2) for the day of my baby's birth (I used "Brand New Day" (by Van Morrison) for my second baby). I have a page titled "What You Are" (by Dave Matthews Band) on which I'll include the baby's family tree. "Two of Us (by The Beatles) for a page about me and my husband, "Your Smiling Face" (James Taylor) for a page about the baby's first smile, etc. It was really fun. Then I burned a couple CDs with all the songs, printed the song list via iTunes, and included those items in the back of the book. So someday my boys will be able to listen to the songs as they flip through their baby books.

I'm trying to post an iMix link here...hope it works

The big favorites I haven't seen mentioned: Godspeed by the Dixie Chicks, Dreamland by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and I Cross My Heart by George Strait. We made that mix six years ago, and it is permanently written on my heart now; both my husband and I can fall asleep almost anywhere in the world if we have that list on our iPods.

The CD Before Sleep Comes by the Irish singer/songwriter Luka Bloom. All acoustic,
lovely, gentle, voice with the sweetest lilt. He's on iTunes. Search for Luka and
the music from that album. Enjoy.

Thanks so much for sharing your music. I love the idea of featuring a playlist collage in a scrapbook page.
I really appreciate exposure to artists I haven't heard of before. I started listening to Alexi Murdoch upon your recommendation.
I hope you and your family have a great day!

A great idea to have the music in albums for the mood.
My favorite kid's entertainers here in Canada are Jack Grunsky and Debbie Carroll.
Grunsky writes music in many genres and from many cultures very well. Eclectic and great for adults also. If you get a best of album, you will not go wrong.
Debbie Carroll is a music educator who has great songs for children and also has some folksy tunes. My daughter (2.5) is in love with this music and spontaneously sings and begins to hop, hop, hop like a bunny and run, run , run like a dog....
best to you on your new adventure!!

The Weepies is awesome -- but the song "Comfort" is all about giving comfort to a special little one.
