3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway

Threethings_paperplay

Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:

[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]

WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?

Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. I like to tilt my camera just a little to get a more unique view...like I'm peeking around a corner.
I would love to try out the printable fabric. I hope you can get it to work with your printer! Could you wrap a piece of masking tape over the starting edge, that way the fabric won't peel up?

TURN OFF THE FLASH!! This has revolutionized my photography. Also love the look of the photo on vellum. Definitely am going to try that. I take pictures of the unexpected things. And ANYTIME you can go outside and photograph something/someone...do it. Love those overcast days. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for all your great tips! I do have a suggestion for the issue of the Fabric Sheets curling on you when you printed. Have you tried taping the leading edge down? Make sure you fold it over cleanly on the other side. You might even want to use a bone folder to crease the edge as flat as possible. It is most likely the thickness of the fabric that is catching on the printer feeder and peeling it back. Would this tip qualify for the give-away? If not, what I love to do with photos is to photoedit and crop. I love cropping to shift perspective or to focus attention on a particular subject or emotion. It makes all the difference sometimes and can make a an otherwise mediocre photo fantastic!

My tip has more to do with printing photos; if you keep pushing print like 40 times and nothing happens and then you realize your printer was just OFF, you might want to cancel the other 39 sheets and not just take the one that printed 1st, walking away, and not notice all your ink and fancy paper is being used. It happened to me!

I try to experiment alot with different settings to see what looks best. I like to read the manual to see if I've missed anything or if I'm ready to try something that was over my head before.
I also try to keep my photoshoots short so my daughter doesn't get irritated with me. I like to catch her playing "as is" alot too, because even though I like having staged photoshoots, there's nothing like real life as it is happening! :)

I love big pictures on my pages. I have a few LOs with 8x12 pics on them. I love the way they almost fill the page. :)
    Have a nice day, Ali!!

Once again-love your ideas! :) I am actually working on a project that calls for 2x2 images, and being a photographer, i tend to NOT take pics that have subjects faraway -ones that is easy to just use a punch to appear 'closer' when using on a lo-anyways, i use photoshop and create my 2x2 image, open up a new canvas, put 2 images on the same canvas (keeping the background white-great for making the white border around the image instead of cutting up a frame)--and printing them up as a 4x6 size (save money that way), then i either use a 2 1/2 punch-sometimes 2in-dependingon what i want to do-this saves time on using a cutter and cutting all 4 sides. Ihope that makes sense..anyways,would love to get my hands on that vellum- i haven't had too much luck with reg vellum-love how your pic and the lace cardstock turned out :)

Haven't use vellum in awhile but printing a picture on it is very intriguing. I must give this a shot. I love the KI cardstock in the background. Nice job on the inspiration, Ali.

My photo tip! Take lots of pictures of anything that strikes your fancy. Practice, practice, practice.. One day you will get a great shot.
In my opinion the best pictures are those not posed for.

Geez. only 512 comments? Heck, there were that many people trying to sign up for the class you taught at my local scrapbooking store. :) (No point in putting myself on the waiting list unless there was some sort of natural disaster).
Favorite photography tips: get in close and closer. Don't center your subject if you're not close. It's always good to have a focal point. Look for catchlights. Try converting to B&W. If all else fails, delete and move on.

One thing I am working on is asking people to take MY picture so that I can record me in my son's scrapbook pages. It's hard when you are the photographer AND the scrapper. You rarely get in the picture yourself. You have a good solution in keeping the camera out and available. I need to teach DH to use the camer and not be afraid of it.
You are very inspiring, keep it up!

I have been taking a lot of baby portraits lately and I love to use fleece as a background. You can easily smooth out wrinkles and it sucks up the excess light to provide a nice even background.
I am really enjoying your special words + photos feature. Looking forward to hearing more tomorrow.

Great ideas Ali! I have used Jacquard cotton printing sheets before with very good results...no sticking or anything like that.
I printed the photo for this layout on cotton paper:

I got these quite a while ago at Target, I believe. If you can't find them, I have lots left and would be very willing to share :)
    Have a great day!!

I'm a bad photographer, so all the tips here have been wonderfully helpful. I try to take as many shots in a given situation as possible, but would love to learn to do closeups. I still regret I don't have a photo of my kid's fat baby feet!

If you print on HP premium photo paper .. the only adhesive I have found to adhere on to cardstock (Bazzill texture) ... is "Duck" ... photo squares .. and other adhesives loosen up over time!

Thanks for the inspiration, Ali! One of my biggest issues, right now, is remembering to have the camera close by when I want to get a shot. Too often, I miss out on capturing the special 'moments' because I forget the camera. (Of course, my hubby is not very cooperative when it comes to having his photo taken, either!) I also need a better system of organizing my photos. My current system is just filing in a folder of the event/occasion, but it just isn't working for me.

thanks again for the ideas... I usually shoot in automatic as well, but use the rectangle thingie or "P"(so technical). I would like to learn about/experiment w/ my camera more. I would also like to get into using my tripod that I got for christmas. Ruthie
