3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway

Threethings_paperplay

Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:

[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]

WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?

Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. My photo tip is when taking photos of children! Don't worry if they don't look perfect - let your photos be natural - just the way your children are!

My photo tip: Make sure you check the white balance. There's nothing worse than trying to take a blue cast out of an outdoor photo ;)
thanks for your inspiration, Ali! I really need to practice the moving around - rather than being rooted in place - when taking photos.

I have decided that the best photograph of someonw is to catch them when they are not posing, people tend to try to hard.
Get random pictures when people least exspect it. The shots turn out Great.
Thanks for all the inspiration Ali.

I always have my camera near by, that way I can get candid shots of my boys. They tend to mug for the camera if they know I'm about to take a photograph. I also try to get those reflective moments, the ones where a person is doing nothing, bit their eyes are saying everything. In action shots I always take at least three photos so that the story is told.
My oldest son is 3, I've been giving a disposable camera just so he can have his own camera.

    Hi Ali,
Thanks for sharing all of this great info. My photo tip is something that I just realized this weekend. I am a terrible subject when a flash is involved. I blink. So when a flash is used, my eyes are either closed or half-closed. This past weekend, I was holding my new grandson and trying to get one last photo before my husband and I had to leave to go home. We needed to use a flash due to the low light. It was so important to me to get this picture and have my eyes open. As usual, in the first few attempts, my eyes were closed. Then my husband just started taking shot after shot rapidly. With so many flashes going on, I stopped blinking and I have a wonderful picture of me holding my sleeping grandson.

I really need to work on my angles. I'm a front on kind of gal and I need to work on just taking the picture from where I'm standing. Stop thinking so much and just do it!

What a fun giveaway Ali! I guess my favorite photo tip is to get low and in close....perhaps this is because I focus on the dog so much...he makes an excellent subject...golden retriever - enough said!

Thank you for sharing your printing results Ali. My photo tip would be to get down low and see things from a child's perspective.

I don't know that it is a tip but one of my favorite things to do is print a photo on Bazzill cardstock - it gives the picture almost a canvas look - LOVE IT!
One of my goals for this year is to learn all the settings on my camera and how to use them correctly - I just have a point and shoot but it still has lots of different settings, etc.

My favorite tip is to make sure you're not always taking "Posed" pics. When I look back, most of my favs are the random, crazy ones!

This may sound terrible but I'm glad you had that problem with the fabric because I did too and I thought it was me. Now I know that it really does have issues. I hope you are able to figure it out though. I'd really like to use it.
Besides a tip you already mentioned (NO FLASH) another tip is to stop trying to pose people in pictures and just make them quick snaps au naturale. I've some really super pics that came from just seeing and snapping.

My fave photo tip is to hand the camera over to someone else once in a while. You never know what pictures you will get from someone else's perspective, and also, handing off the camera is the only way to get into a shot yourself.

    Hi Ali
The main thing I need to do - is keep taking photos! I learn something new each time I print a batch, and there's always one magical "I-don't-know-how-that-happened" shot that I wouldn't have got if I'd left my camera in it's case! Thanks for sharing, Jo in Oz x

I have the hardest taking the time to print my pictures. What's the best way to organzie my pictures after I work on them in Photoshop?
Tip: Try to make a habit of checking three things when you pick up your camera: white balance, ISO and camera setting for the moment you're snapping your pics.

I am at the planning stage of just about everything related to card marking; just deciding what look I want and what papers, printer....
I really like the background effect created with the injet WorldWind vellum.
I have started collecting photos, keeping in mind how I will use the photos and in what type of card: Mother's Day, Christmas, Valentine's. I would encourage taking shots this Spring (all the beautiful blossoms on flowering trees, to get a head start on next year's Mother's Day cards. I took lots of great shots this past winter (2007) with the plan of using them for Chirstmas 2008 cards. This gives me the time to grow ideas.

My favortie photo tip is change your position! get on the ground, stand on a chair, stand above your subject, bend below it, lay on your stomach, climb up in the swing fort and shoot down at them swinging on the swings!! Take a different look at it and you will be surprised at what you get. Happy shooting!! Dawn H
