3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway

Threethings_paperplay

Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:

[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]

WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?

Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. Photo tips: Hand the camera off more to my 5 year old, Vince. He really does take some intersting perspective shots that I'd never think of.

A favorite photo tip---watch what's in your background or what could walk into your background of your shot---You may want it there or you may not. I have a wedding picture shot at our public boat launch on the dock of my husband and I kissing with these couple of scruffy looking fishermen walking by looking at us. It is hilarious and my photographer wanted to catch their looks as well as a photo without them.

My fave photo tip at this time of year is to use the macro setting for pics of flowers. And to get under the blossoms and look up towards the sky too!

I absolutely love how the vellum pic turned out. I have to try that! And soon!
I wonder if the printable fabric would work better in a different printer. I say that because I use a similar hp printer at work and I swear everything gets jammed in that printer. Very frustrating! So anyways, borrow a friend's printer and see if it works. I'm dying to see the results!
As always, thanks for inspiring me!

What I want to work on with my camera is learning what more of the exposures and what more of the buttons do..I just don't seem to have the time to learn more than just point and shoot. Thanks so much for the chance to win.

I love having my subjects stand in direct sunlight so their faces are dark. It makes for a really neat affect and also a good scrapbook page! : ) Thank you!

    Pick me!!
My tip for photos?? DON'T BE AFRAID TO LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT. You'll notice that most professional photographers actually double as contortionists while they are shooting their photos. They twirl around on the ground, lay in mud puddles, scale rock walls...all to get "that photo". My biggest tip to people is to not be embarassed to do the same: get down & dirty with your photo taking! Stand on a chair. Lay on the ground. Point your camera up/down. Tilt the photo. ETC. You'll be amazed at how much the picture changes (literally!) from a different angle!

My photo tip is to take max 20 photos of an event or an outing...makes it easier to narrow down....if you're unsure that the photos would work out then take more.
My husband's advice is to leave the camera alone at times and just enjoy and remember the moments without photos. Memories through words; journaling adds a powerful andecotes to memories....

I love how the vellum photo turned out! Hope you have better luck with the other two papers.
My favorite photo tip...printing "4-up" onto a 4 x 6 photo sheet. You can print any configuration, 4 all the same images, 4 different images, etc. You can get lots of photos onto a layout this way, or if you're doing duplicates of the same layout you only have to print your photos once.

I want to work on close up shots. Can't tell yet if my sometimes-blurry attempts are due to the limitations of my point-and-shoot camera, or operator error/ ignorance. Need to work on this.
My best tips would be (as you have already said!) to take LOTS of shots-- you can always delete, but you can't go back in time and recapture the moment.
One positive comment people have made about some of my shots/pages is that I capture the grandiose and the miniscule (especially in natural settings), which (along with the people shots!) tell the story better than just one or the other by itself. One of my favorite semi-recent photos features a chipmunk in the foreground and one of the peaks of the Grand Teton range in the background.
Thanks for the great ideas re photos and the chance for the giveaway!

My favorite photo printing surface is vellum. Not only in color but black and white and sepia also. I have even done black and white with a touch of color and love the look.

I have used a strip of masking tape along the leading edge of transparencies, fabric paper, iron-ons, vellum, and several other specialty papers that needed to be put through my inket and deskjet printers. Worked like a charm and then peeled off easily. The blue PAINTER'S tape worked the best and removed cleanly on every surface I have ever tried it on. Love the transparency photo over the KI Memories paper lace! Keeping my fingers crossed!

    My favorite photo tip:
I move around with the camera. I get close and I move father away. I will walk to one side and then another. Moving around makes it more likely that I will get a shot that will speak to me emotionally.

I started using the timer so I can be in more of our photos and I want to play with some new lens. I took a photography class at my LSS and it gave me some new ideas.
