3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway

Threethings_paperplay

Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:

[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]

WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?

Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. I want to learn how to get my pictures to look good when I don't use the flash... Do I photoshop them? Do I change the white balance? Aperture mode? I'm a beginner and need the time to play with the camera.
Love the photos you take. They look so natural. :)

Wow. Your response to your contests are amazing. What I would like to do is to print photos on cloth and make a couple of projects like DD. I have her new book on it-I just need to try it!

Thanks for the drawing and inspiration....and it's FREE!! One of my favorite photo tips is enlarging the photo to 5x7 or 8x10. Haven't tried 12 x 12 yet but will be soon!
    Thanks again! Sarah

I love the idea of taking photo's as people have their backs to the camera.
Also taking a photo for each new activity or event - so i need to have my camera with me all the time to capture lots of little moments and i have then added these to a calendar for the month so that each day has a photo and a word or two that is matched with more detail in my journal.
Love the ideas that others have shared.

Such good stuff. What I really want to work on is adding text to my photos. I realize it's a basic step many have already accomplished, but I have not. I love the layout with Simon and his rain boots and that's my inspiration to figure out how in PSE6 to do it!

yay a give-a-way...wouldn't have seen tis so early but my dog had to go out and she drank my husbands frying oil he left out on the grill to fry chicken last night, a treat(his fried chicken) and now I'm sitting with my doggy who has a bellyache. all because I did not want him to fry in the house because it would smell...

I'm trying to decide whether or not to get a new camera...I have a 7 year old hand me down (software was so old I couldn't get it to load onto my computer)...we have a newer camera but it has a time delay with the flash - so when you press the button and the subject moves, you end up an entirely different picture. I've been looking at a Nikon D40...just not sure I want to spend that much.

The chances of me winning anything are slight but hey I'll comment just to stand that slim chance... hehehe. Re the printing issues... I've tried vellum before with mixed results... I'm too hasty and I forget to let it dry before trying to attach it to my page. Your results look good on the vellum... I might try a pic or two now instead of just journalling. I haven't tried any of the other papers (mainly because I haven't seen them here in South Africa) but would love to experiement. Did try iron-ons once but couldn't get it to work... don't think I read the instructions correctly! Good luck with your next attempt.

My favorite tip to getting good focus is to put it on a single focus point (center generally) and lock the focus on the persons eyeball. Not cheek - not eyelashes, typically I try to aim for the inside corner of the eye the is closest to me. This really only makes a huge difference if you are using a low f/stop. :)

One of my favourite tips is to convert less than perfect photos to black and white. I find that this helps to hide some of the imperfections. And another advantage is that you can now use whatever colours of pp you like!

Thank-you. I am just sorting a bunch of photos to print and you made me think about how I need to look at the story now (before I print) and remind myself I can use photos from different occasions on one LO to tell that story. Thank-you

My photo tip is to delete unwanted photos right after downloading them. It quick, doable and prevents a back log of photos to sort through.

Thanks for such great inspiration :) I would like to master photos of more than one person but capturing them at ease together and keeping it natural rather than posing for me.

My current 'thing' is handing the camera over to our 6 year old - it's amazing how her natural enthusiasm is a nice reminder not to make taking photos all about the perfect shot but capturing what is happening at the exact moment - she is also great at taking pictures on some crazy angles and the results are fantastic!! Your blog as always is inspiring!!

Thank you for giving us so much of your time to share all this with us. You really are a wonderful person to put so much effort into showing us how you do things. I think by you showing me all this I feel I can do anything I want with my photos and scrapbook them how I like. No rules.

I like to use every camera I own! Mix 'em up. I shoot with my DSLR, my film SLR, my Holga, my fisheye, my 8 lens toy camera. I borrow a large format and a Hasselblad-I try slide film, 35 mm film, black and white, color, polaroid.
Mix it up and put it all together. It's fun to experiment and see what I get:)
    thanks Ali,for all your inspiration.
