3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway

Threethings_paperplay

Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:

[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]

WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?

Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. One thing I am really struggling with now that I shoot digital is printing my photos. My memory cards are full - all the time! And, I like what you said about deleting photos - I tend to take 10-20 shots of the same thing! I know I don't need them all, but I have to convince myself that it is ok to delete!!
I really like this words + photos - it has been very inspiring to me!!

I love this segment. I am not a good photographer and my biggest challenge right now seems to be lighting. I can never seem to get the lighting right when I take a photo.

My greatest photo tip (or personal discovery) is the backlight setting on my camera--- it just works wonders. I do not always take the best photos and it is easy to blame the camera, and you just cannot go out and buy new equipment (at least I cannot) so my goal is to learn the settings on my camera to take the best photos I can

Two of the easiest photo tips to make any photo instantly more pleasing:
1)Rule of thirds...if you draw three imaginary line either horizontally or vertically into your frame to divide it into thirds, your main subject should fall into one or two of those thirds.
2)Get up close and fill the frame when shooting single objects!!! Try it - take a photo of a flower or otherwise single object (mug, tape dispenser, whatever)from a bit of a distance and then take multiple shots getting in closer each time. Chances are the subject you're shooting will look much better when it fills most of the frame.

Well, to be honest, I want to work with a new camera all-together! HA!
But seriously, currently I do not do anything to my pics, just print and scrap. I feel like sometimes I should do something in PSE to them...but I'm kinda chicken.
    Thanks for this amazing giveaway!!

my favorite photo advise is to take lots of pictures.. if it is digital, then all you're spending is your time and memory. if you don't like the picture, make a backup -because maybe one day, you'll see it in a different light, touch it up and it will be a great photo.

I try to take photos at different angles to get different looks. My goal is to get a new camera at some point so that the pictures are better quality.

I love the freedom to snap away with my digital camera and not worrying about running out of film. This has allowed for more spontaneous pics because I'm not trying for that one perfect shot.
My most important tip is to keep the battery charged - I learned that the hard way recently; missed a once in a lifetime closeup experience with a gorilla. Now I carry the charger with me at all times.
When the Graphix rub-ons first came out I couldn't wait to try them, but like you, my first attempts were less than exciting. I tried on a smaller scale and found that practice helped. Now I am comfortable with the results and experimenting with enlarging my projects. Don't give up!

My tip would be to always have your camera on hand and don't always take a posed pic. Some of my favorites are always the ones that are taken randomly when people don't always know you're shooting.

omgosh, woman! What a wealth of ideas!!! I am notorious for having too many notebooks! I have a husband and four kids so can you imagine?? I am so excited about this series you are doing this week. I have not always been consistent in my journal-keeping. Your ideas have truly inspired me and I am definitely going to set some of them in motion. Awesome post.

My fave photo tip - - the best photos are taken when you least expect it. I almost feel bad not taking my kids to a photography studio around their birthday, but I really do believe in that very popular "candid shot." Stop trying to create the perfect atmosphere!
Having said that, try to keep in mind the BACKGROUND - - it really is the one thing you can manipulate (sort of - LOL!).

Now that almost everybody is shooting digital my favorite advice is to take a ton of photos. It gives you the chance to examine the photos to determine what you like and don't like.
I also believe in getting closer to your subject.

I love working with vellum on greeting cards...I usually print a photo on it, to give the card a hazy effect.

my tip is the same as many others...ALWAYS have your camera with you! I LOVE how more in tune I am with my surroundings knowing I have my camera and can take it out at any time I see something I want to capture and remember forever!

I want to work on taking more photos of everyday things. I'm always so caught up in the "events" that I forget the daily things that happen all the time.
Just taking more photos in general is something I need to work on, too.
I usually have my camera with me, but I don't always take it out. I really need to work on that one.

My favorite photo tip is to hold the camera up high when taking self-portraits -- it minimizes chins! Also, just to take more self-portraits. Now I feel like I'm in my family photos SO much more.

My goal with photography is to be able to take a picture as close to what I see with my eye. Some days this is a struggle and other days I'm spot on. Loving this weekly feature.

I just thought I'd tell you that I use an HP printer and I also use printable photo paper alot for my quilting/fabric projects. Try another brand. I've only used the EQ brand once and didn't have a problem, but I prefer to use june tailor brand or printed treasures! Good luck!

I am a complete amateur with photography and still using a digital point and shoot, but my current obsession is the macro setting. I use it for absolutely everything and love how easy it makes the blurred distance/close focal point thing.

I really need to work on simply taking more pictures. There are many occasions where I will have the camera but forget to use it. Really want to work on that.

The printing on vellum appeals to me. I haven't ventured passed photo paper at this point so that would be a good and seemingly easy start.
