3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway

Threethings_paperplay

Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:

[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]

WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?

Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. I need to work on taking my camera with me every time I leave the house. I have tried printing pictures on vellum, love the way it looks! Thanks for doing the topic of journaling, that is what gives me the most trouble.

I tend to keep the flash off -- and use natural light, even in the house. My night flash photos are always awful.
Macro mode is another fav. of mine.

My suggestion to taking good pictures of your kids would be to take lots of them and outdoor pictures are always nice.
I am loving everything about word + photo!
    Thanks,

I have a 2 month old and have learned to keep a camera close by at all times. You just never know when the perfect shot will redeem itself. Also, I make my husband pick up the camera now and then. Nothing like the veiw from a guys eye. He has a pretty good one too!
    Thanks for all the inspiration!!

My photo tip may sound simplistic, but I find it helps to always have a camera w/me. The odd little things I find along the way or the inspiration to capture part of our everyday life can be recorded.
I have a slim Minolta, couple years old, but small enough to always have in my purse & it takes great pictures.

I want to learn how to take good pics in the waning light of dusk. I have a hard time getting clear pictures if i just turn the flash off, and the pics go totally wack if the flash goes off.. i know that some cameras have a "low light setting" but if it doesn't?
also... a favorite tip of mine..
I carry a teeny comp book (black and white school days thing from Wal Mart)in my purse and when i take a pic of something different, i scribble down my thoughts about it, and date it so that when i'm ready to develop them, or scrap, i remember why i wanted a picture of my children's dirty socks on the porch, and the emotion of it isn't lost. Or in better things like why your honey had tears in his eyes.... Sometimes you take the pic and forget about it, but really you were trying to capture the feelings of the moment, and many times they're fleeting....
Besides who doesn't love having their journaling ready?
    Anyway, just a thought..
    :)
    Thanks for all the inspiration-
    Love love love you Ali!

I made a little felt book for my 2yr old nephew of numbers and on the front cover I printed a picture of the two of us on fabric and with text that said I love you as many hearts as you can count and more and more. See pictures below. Cant wait to try out some of the printable vellum, etc.

such great ideas here! thanks for the opp and the inspiration
    my (very amateur) tips:
~ hand off the camera to someone else, then photograph them as they shoot
~ photograph objects outside - the light is much better
~ use the macro function on your camera when shooting up close - it makes a world of difference

I don't have any photo tips! I have used your tip to not use flash, but I have a Canon P&S and it often leaves me with very dark photos. So I'm still working on that!
Would love to get some of that vellum paper to try out!

    My favorite tips...
"Over shoot". I took 1,500 plus photos during 17 days on a mission trip to Brazil. I've gone through and narrowed it to 900. My photography professor would say, "Narrow it again, until you have at least 10 percent of the original photos".
Basically...1,500 to 150. These will be your best of the best....
Use a variety of composition tools.
    Always carry your camera.
Back up, back up, back up....
    Charge those batteries.
Have "back up" batteries in your bag.
Have a camera bag you can use. I invested $150/200 into a professional camera bag when I worked for the newspaper. It's my best purchase, outside of my digi camera. Everything is protected in my bag...and it's big enough, everything I need is in it.

Like you said . . . journaling can be a short note with a few words here and there or it could be a length story to capture. I try to keep in mind when I do layouts which pictures says it all in a few words and which has a story to tell. Thanks for your ideas!

My super simple tip - take LOTS of photos! I take way, way more than I ever think I'll want or need. (Yay for digital.) This guarantees that I'll end up with at least a couple of good ones and, if I'm lucky, a couple of stunningly great ones - and it's so much easier for me to scrap with good photos!

I'll have to ask my sister what photo fabric she uses. She has used I don't know how many packages for quilting/making crafts/etc.
My fav. photo tip -- When I'm doing a "photo shoot" with my kids to try and get some good portrait pictures, I sing the blues. tehehe. . .odd, but it works. There's something about that bluesy rhythm and the fact that I can make up lyrics as I go along that just produces some amazing smiles with my kids.

I love this new series of yours! It's really helping me to branch out. As to photos, one of the newest things I have playing with is to print my black and white photos directly on textured cardstock to give it a grainy feel. I like how you printed a photo on vellum. This something I will definately have to try next!
