One Little Word 2013

One Little Word necklace from Lisa Leonard.

My word for 2013 is open.

Last year I had a great story about how my word came to me. This year it was more of a whisper and to be honest I'm not really sure what it means for me right now, or what it will end up meaning for me 12-months from now. And I'm okay with that.

Open is an attitude and an approach. It's a reminder to live wholeheartedly, to enter the ring, to live the length and the width. It's how I want to tackle this year.

I love that open is an action & a re-action. I can act with an open heart; I can re-act with an open heart.

I want to be open to it all - the amazing and the challenging. Wide open.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2013. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

ONE LITTLE WORD WORKSHOP

Registration is open for 2013 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we  can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the  course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2013.

This might be my favorite post of the year -- every single year. It's so inspiring to see all of our dreams and intentions in one space.

I have many words on my draft list, but the one that keeps calling my name is CHERISH.

I want to focus on cherishing my baby girl, my relationship with my husband and time with family and friends. I want to document this time in my life, and make space in my home (and schedule) for those things that I truly cherish and rid myself of things that I don't.

My word in 2011 was shine and in 2012 it was open. My word for 2013 chose me seemingly out of nowhere last week, before I felt I had actually done any "work" around/for it! I was uncertain about it at first, but as I explore the meanings, ideas and possibilities of it, I get more excited about how living this word could positively affect me. My word for 2013 is tend.

I've never really chosen one little word before and somehow one word has been resonating to me since the big change in my life happened a couple months ago...

My word is STRONG - to be strong to overcome what the changes that continue to happen in my life in 2013. To be strong emotionally, mentally, physically, and to accept things...

    Hi Ali,

I have just signed up to the class and my word for the year is GROW.

I have decided to make time for myself this year which is hard when working and two young children, but I really need to do this for myself. I have let so much go this past year that means a lot to me and I want to embrace that all again this year and really looking forward to the class.

My word has come to me this morning after reading all the comments here and everyone else's words.
    LIGHT
I need to step into the light. Think more lightly. Tread more lightly. Be lighter (physically and emotionally!) Spend more time in the light (not cooped up indoors). Lighten some of the stuff that's cluttering up my life.
I think it's the right word for me. I've been doing OLW for five years and every word has helped shape my years. Here's to 2013 - the year of LIGHT.

My word for this year is EMBRACE! It just came to me this morning, while laying in bed. I was at that point, of almost falling asleep. And, there it was! Then, I was wide awake, thinking of all the ways this one word can impact my life. Embrace family, friends, change, imperfection, creativity, fear, possibilities, LIFE! There are so many things that can be included on the list. I knew it was perfect for where I am, in life, right now!

My word this year will be "grace." Last year it was "strong" and in some ways I did get stronger in aspects of my life. This year will be another year of hard changes including a move to another neighborhood so my daughter can go to a great public school, getting our oldest son accepted into a college which because of his autism will be a harder task because we must find a school that can meet his needs and the challenges of being chronically ill. I need to have the grace to accept all of these changes (and Lord, do I HATE change!) I'm really looking forward to incorparating my word this year into my life.

This is the first time I'm committing to a word, although I've watched this idea on your blog for years. My word for 2013 will be shed. Shed pounds, shed guilt, shed clutter in our home, shed excuses. I can't wait!

I am between two this year; hope and believe. I need to believe that things will work out, that my IVF will work this time. I need to believe that I can overcome difficulties. I need to believe in something greater than this world. I need to hope that my IVF will work and that my husband and I will have a baby (hope is actually the word my husband chose!)

My word this new year will be STOP. Not an easy word for me to embrace but very necessary. Life has been good thus far but there are habits that need to stop for the better beginning with less chair time and more gym time...Happy New Year everyone!

My word this year is Organize. It's not very exciting or inspiring but it just keeps coming to mind as I look around my house. Simplify has been sort of hovering in the background so as I organize my house and my studio I feel I'll be simplifying my life.

My word somehow just appeared - suddenly it was there without thinking about it:
NEW (in German: NEUES - an adjectiv made into a noun = something new) and that word really fits. I am curious what will happen with it.
