One Little Word 2013

One Little Word necklace from Lisa Leonard.

My word for 2013 is open.

Last year I had a great story about how my word came to me. This year it was more of a whisper and to be honest I'm not really sure what it means for me right now, or what it will end up meaning for me 12-months from now. And I'm okay with that.

Open is an attitude and an approach. It's a reminder to live wholeheartedly, to enter the ring, to live the length and the width. It's how I want to tackle this year.

I love that open is an action & a re-action. I can act with an open heart; I can re-act with an open heart.

I want to be open to it all - the amazing and the challenging. Wide open.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2013. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

ONE LITTLE WORD WORKSHOP

Registration is open for 2013 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we  can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the  course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2013.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this class! This is the first year that my word hasn't been crystal clear. It needs to convey a specific thing--can anyone help? "SELECT', and "DISCERN" are the closest so far. I'm looking for a word that means: choose among allllll the stuff, so that the end result is a life full of right things, the things that are the most beneficial for me. (Seems that I don't actively select, & I end up feeling chaotic and frustrated.) Any ideas? Thanks!

My word for 2013 is INTENT. Eat with intent. Spend with intent. Create and read and write with intent. Add purpose and meaning to every moment, and refuse to accept "coasting".

This is great! We could all live with a little more intent. I know that I am often in trouble because I do not have a clear grasp of the intent behind my actions. Best of luck.

My word came to me in the form of a whisper, too. - GRACE-

I need to more fully understand the virtue, the unmerited divine assistance and the state of sanctification that is enjoyed through GRACE.

Grace has many more facets that I need to define and embody.
Grace can also be defined as approval, favor, mercy, pardon and privilege; a disposition to or an act or instance of kindness, courtesy, or clemency; a charming or attractive trait; a pleasing appearance; ease and suppleness of movement; used as a title of address or reference for a duke a duchess, or an archbishop; a short prayer at a meal asking a blessing or giving thanks; a musical trill; a sense of propriety; the quality or state of being considerate or thoughtful; to confer dignity or honor on; adorn and embellish.

I suspect that my OLW is going to keep me busy this year--but will ultimately soften and change me into a more gracious creature.

My word this year is DO . .it scares me silly which means I must embrace it and see what the year brings. My favourite quote for 'do' is

We cannot do great things, but we can do small things with great love." ~ Mother Teresa

I'm wondering... I've never done the course and am not a scrapbooker (and won't be starting that this year) would it still be worthwhile to take? I am a blogger and journal keeper. Curious.

The first word that came to me was "me" meaning I was going to take the time to work on what makes me happy or a better person. I have spent a lot of time making sure others are happy (and ignoring my feelings) and it is starting to affect me in a negative way. But then I started to think that sounded selfish. So I came up with another word, RECLAIM.

I am going to reclaim my happiness, my health by losing weight, my spirituality, my marriage, and my joy in helping others.

I haven,t decide yet if my word will be Teaching or Learning. I'm a former teacher, stay at home mom since 5 years.....I sometimes forget that I am a teacher and I'd like to use my talent. I'd like to teach my kids some stuff, and also maybe invite some scrapbooking related teaching on the way..... teaching, although it seems to be for the others brings me a lot too. I could also teach myself some things, taking classes, read books, open my horizons a bit. I feel like the only thing I'm doing since 5 years is taking care of my kids and dreaming about some time for myself to learn about photoshop, photography, movie editing, cooking, and the list goes on and on.

I think my word this year will be FIT. Mainly to to shape up my life, my health, emotionally and physically. Last year my word was ENJOY. I was a new mother and I really wanted to enjoy motherhood and my son. I enjoyed every minute of it and he will be a year old today! Now to focus on getting my life back in shape with being FIT!

    One Little Word 2013

My word for 2013 is gratitude.

My word came to me this year without much effort this year. I never questioned what it should be because we celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary next December. This is the 4th year that I have chosen a word. What amazes me is how I am confirmed in my choice of word. This year I had just picked the word and found it on a tile at a craft show. I just received a note from a friend who signed it "with gratitude." That would not have jumped out at me except that I had chosen the word and I also looked up the definition.

Gratitude: the quality of being thankful.; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. This definition brought a new dimension to gratitude and living out the word intentionally.

I am looking forward to enjoying the prompts this year as I have never actually taken Ali's class, but just used the concept..

FOCUS jumped at me a few months ago. I need to focus on me and what I really want out of life. Balance is sort of a background word.

LESS. this is the word that keeps popping into my head. like less clutter, less saying yes to the things I really want to say no to. less electronic time when the boys are awake. less. but the only thing holding me back is that I don't want less to be negative. I want to focus on the positive action. does that make sense? I'm still trying to decide. the other word that's come to me is IMPLEMENT. I like the action word. hmmmm....

I have chose the word Cultivate, inspired by the Becky Higgins class; Project Real Life. I am using each of the 12 cards for each of the month and I am going to focus on each one for the month! I've been savoring this class for sometime now, I can't wait!
