One Little Word 2013

One Little Word necklace from Lisa Leonard.

My word for 2013 is open.

Last year I had a great story about how my word came to me. This year it was more of a whisper and to be honest I'm not really sure what it means for me right now, or what it will end up meaning for me 12-months from now. And I'm okay with that.

Open is an attitude and an approach. It's a reminder to live wholeheartedly, to enter the ring, to live the length and the width. It's how I want to tackle this year.

I love that open is an action & a re-action. I can act with an open heart; I can re-act with an open heart.

I want to be open to it all - the amazing and the challenging. Wide open.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2013. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

ONE LITTLE WORD WORKSHOP

Registration is open for 2013 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we  can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the  course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2013.

My word is Change. Change my habits (exercise and eating) change my attitudes (exercise, eating, approach to my diabetes) be a part of change by getting involved with volunteering, adjust to change (being a new SAHM, not being hung up on my old work) and being open to change (potentially moving, being accepting of change within our life during the year). The being open to major change part will be the hardest!!

"LAUGH". The Proverbs 31 woman of the Bible, works, plans, mends, prepares, gives, oversees, buys, makes, and is respected by her family, but "she can laugh at the days to come". She trusts God, and has a smile on her face. All her preparation, work, and "doing" does not make her uptight, controlling, or a stick in the mud. SHE LAUGHS! I feel I need to add this to my ideal woman picture...she isn't just on top of her game...she is light-hearted, trusting God with the results. That's where I want to be more in a year.

My word is FINISH. I have a million projects to complete...the biggest being moving out of temporary housing into my house. That will complete this year long journey I have been on since June.

My OLW this year is "TRANSFORM" ~ I am going to transform my life by transforming my body, mind, spirit, home, reactions etc. This word just came to me out of the blue I wasn't even thinking of my OLW or about resolutions. It so fits what I want this year to be. Last year was "Embrace" I didn't have a clue when I chose that word what would take place in 2012. My husband was laid off from teaching after 14 years, I had to have a hysterectomy and 2 weeks later an artery tore and I almost lost my life. I traveled to Costa Rica with my little family, I had Sinus surgery ~ I increased my personal business. It's been an eventful year and I have done a good job embracing all that 2012 brought. Now in 2012 I look forward to transforming my life.

I chose simplify for my word last year and it was an amazing year. I really felt that I sat with that word and it made a difference in my life. This year I thought I would choose complete but it wasn't quite right. Yesterday "less" found me and so I am going with this word.

    2013= LESS!

Mine's forgiveness. I've a strong need as well as desire to let go of a lot of 'stuff' that's lived in my head & heart way too long. That letting go begins with forgiveness...

My word this year is DARE. I think it encompasses all the things I want to work on in 2013, that is, challenging and pushing myself in everything I do. To take risks, and go to the highest level I can in work, as a mother/wife, an aspiring artist/scrapbooker, as well as to develop my gifts and inspire others around me. Looking forward to starting this class.

My word is going to be change. There have been a lot of changes in my life this pass year and I have not handled some of them very well. I am hoping to do that better in the new year. Changes with having adult kids, "emptyness", my relationship with my husband and figuring out who we are as a couple after 30 years of being completely focused on children. Lots of changes.........I am pretty excited about this year coming and what will come of it.

Way to go! I always think its better to embrace change then hide from it. I am sure you're in for a very exciting year.

It's going to sound a little superficial but my word is Sparkle. For the past 5 years my life seems to have become a little old hat. In 2013 I want a life that is bright, shiny and a little bit exciting. In essesence it's going to sparkle.

Love this, Ali. Do you have any recommendations for sellers that make word charms? Like a charm you would add to a charm bracelet?

My word is going to be "peace." My biggest struggle this past year has been with fear and anxiety -- peace is the opposite. Peace is saying I don't have to worry, it's going to be okay. Peace is calmness and surrender. Peace is making peace with the past and the present. Peace is keeping my cool. Peace is the word. :)

My word for 2013 just came to me naturally. It's RYTHM. First of all, because I want to enjoy a balanced life, take time to enjoy some events and adapt my rythm to some others. Secondly, because I want to replay the guitar. And third, because we will have to adapt our rythm as a family as we will welcome a third baby boy in 4 months. :)

My word seems to have chosen me ... I think I'm going with VITAL.

    1. essential to maintain life
    2. forceful, energetic, or lively
    3. of, relating to, having, or displaying life
    4. indispensable or essential
    5. of great importance; decisive

2013 is going to be a year of transition for me. I've got a chronic health condition that, at age 35, has ended my corporate career and landed me on disability. I feel like I've totally lost myself. Focusing on that which is VITAL and regaining as much of my VITALITY as my body will allow ... well, I guess that's my job now.

My word is light. 2012 was a tough year with my father passing and some personal challenges for my daughter. I had thought of other words I might choose, but when light popped into my head it just stuck and I've been thinking of it since then. Because my dad's passing was so heavy I think I could use some light. I could use some light-ness and I like the fact that the word also reminds me of spiritual light -- enlightenment--perhaps there will be opportunities for more clarity, improved perception, even joy. I am looking forward to different connections I will make with this word. This is my first time "playing" and I'm looking forward to it!

I've been kicking around several words, but so far the two words that are speaking to me are DISTANCE and FORWARD....mainly because I'm planning on running my first half marathon this year. Gonna kick them around a little longer before I decide.

TOGETHER. My husband is currently deployed to Afghanistan. I have not seen him since June 23, 2012. He won't be home for R&R until March 2013. He won't be home for good until sometime after July 4. I am tired of being apart. This is our 7th (and hopefully last) deployment as an Army family. We just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary (via Skype) two days ago. I love him with all my heart. I love this Army life that we live. But I am ready for our family to be TOGETHER. No matter where that is.
