One Little Word 2013

One Little Word necklace from Lisa Leonard.

My word for 2013 is open.

Last year I had a great story about how my word came to me. This year it was more of a whisper and to be honest I'm not really sure what it means for me right now, or what it will end up meaning for me 12-months from now. And I'm okay with that.

Open is an attitude and an approach. It's a reminder to live wholeheartedly, to enter the ring, to live the length and the width. It's how I want to tackle this year.

I love that open is an action & a re-action. I can act with an open heart; I can re-act with an open heart.

I want to be open to it all - the amazing and the challenging. Wide open.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2013. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

ONE LITTLE WORD WORKSHOP

Registration is open for 2013 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we  can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the  course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2013.

My word for 2013 is "go." This is my first time participating in OLW, but I really think this is going to be the perfect adventure I need. I dealt with anxiety alot this past year and I think OLW is what I need to cope. My word was mainly chosen because of the phrase "let go." This phrase is in some of my favorite songs. It was also one of the words chosen by a past OLW participant that you featured, and I recently ran into it in a blog post of someone's blog that I love to read. It is fate! This is my word and I can't wait to see where it takes me.

My OLW for this year is SIMPLICITY. It just came to me the other day and I wasn't even thinking about the OLW. It's just time for it for me. There's just too much of everything in my life right now and I need to start living more simply without all the excess. It's just time.

hhi sweetie! Love your word. I was reading through somethings and came across "TRUST" it was screaming to me unlike your whisper. I need to trust in God more, I need to trust in my relationships and trust myself that things will be ok in 2013. 2012 was rough on us and will unfortunately carry into 2013, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel and I trust that I will find it.

Thank you for the amazing and constant inspiration. Please know that you are amazing and I have been changed by things you've done. Keep it up.

My word is blessing. It is the first word that came to mind after learning about OLW. I love that it is an action word as well as a noun. This word chose me because I have been wanting to demonstrate good more consciously, and I have been wanting to recognize and acknowledge the blessings I receive.

i think my word is going to be brave. i need to be brave to change my professional life. to carve my own path...maybe carve is more my word? and silently in the back i hear "do" calling me...do this and do that...do all the things i put aside so i can be available to others and not me. maybe is should hyphenate it...or maybe my word should be me? for once be brave and do for me. that's my word. no - that's my attitude for 2013. be brave and do for me. i love it.
    brave. do. me.

My word came through very loud last month, its FOCUS. I tend to just let life pass me by and I just don't want to do that any more. I'm choosing 5 areas of life to focus on this year, which will be Health, Create, Learn, New and Give. Can't wait to start (look forward to your class too Ali!).

    HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!

My word for 2013 is surrender. I wrote about how it came to me on my site. I LOVE This challenge Ali. In 2012, I changed my computer password to my word for the year (which was execute). I plan to do the same in 2013 to help remind me of my commitment!

My bestie and I both decided last night to do this and at first I had balance but as I lay awake st 2:53 am, knowing I have to be up in an hour, a new word came to me.... Give. I give my time to chikdrens charities by making scrapbooks, and I always give my time to family and friends... I need to give more to myself, my life, my house, my health and my marriage (not necessary in that order). I will still give time to others but also take time to give myself what I need. Funny enough my original word of balance works perfectly with this!

    Main Entry: actualize
    Part of Speech: verb
    Definition: make real
Synonyms: accomplish, bring about, engineer, produce, realize

My goal is to make a lot of things real this year, not the least of which is myself.

    :)

My OLW for 2013 is ANYWAY from the poem "Do It Anyway" that's credited to Mother Teresa. It hit me hard and I resisted the word at first because of the hard work I was certain would come with it...

The poem version found written on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta:

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

Looking forward to this class and exploring this word!

I am debating between two words. I first thought Focus would be my word in 2013, then I began to think Light should be my word. I seem to feel a little overwhelmed by things and thought Focus would help me get a grip on things- focus on God, family and health as opposed to work, work, and work. Then I began to think that was too driven- just more intense, so maybe Light- as in lighten up, seek the light in my life, be the light..... still trying to decide and whether or not I will take the class. That may give me the follow through I need.

My word for 2013 is BLOOM. I love the floral meaning, but it has another interesting definition of "a mass of metal rolled into a thick bar for further working": all the projects that are ready for me to work! And it means a "flourishing, healthy condition". Can't wait to participate in your course this year!

The one little word that came to me a few months ago is VITALITY. I've been pondering the meaning(s) of that for a while now, but it has felt right for me and the direction I need for my life to take. But then, as I received an unexpected Christmas miracle, the word has taken on a life of its own. <3

Oh. Mah. Word. I am so full of yayness over the word that has chosen me for Twenty Thirteen... Blossom, which means, to develop or come to a promising stage... I have already discovered two quotes that will help me to blossom during this 365 day journey around the sun... "A New Year is unfolding ~ like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within." And my favorite... "And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." Let's get this party started!

I have thought of having a word or concept to focus on in the past, but nothing was really speaking to me. This year the word ENOUGH has been brought to the forefront of my mind, and I knew immediately I had "my word". ENOUGH speaks to the fact that I am ENOUGH - I don't need to be thinner, smarter, prettier . . . I am enough right now. I have ENOUGH - I have all that I need. More time, clothes, money isn't the answer; making the most of what I have is.
So, here's to 2013, and to ENOUGH.
